Italic values estimated by CERAFILTEC (should be verified)

5. Specific Project Requirements and Notes

The sludge return flow from filtration back to the activated sludge tank should be set to a ratio of 3 or higher. The TSS in the biology is by default set between
8 g/l - 10.0 g/l. The estimated biological values are based on the assumption, that the biology has a low sludge loading of about 0.15 kg BOD5/kgTSS*d which
assures a sufficent nitrification and degradation. Nevertheless, CERAFILTEC is not responsible for the achievemement of the target values.
Important: During intensive cleaning sequences the filtration tank will be emptied. It is to be ensured that the volume can be pumped to the biology tank
during the cleaning sequences.

Volume Nitrification m³ 1.975,3 Note: the values are generated from a calculation sheet and need to be
Volume Denitrification m³ 1.316,9 verified by contractor.
Excess Sludge m³/d 144,1

3. General Information

The raw water is from municipal TP. It is assumed that previous degradation steps like mechanical separation, primary sedimentation or biological
degradation steps takes place.

Pre-treatment:
Typical steps and their combination are: screens, sieves, grit chamber, oil trap, coagulation, flocculation and primary settling. A well-working pre-
treatment achieves removal values of up to 35% according to the ATV 131.
The dosing of Ferric-Chloride can be use for P-Removal if needed.

Biological treatment:
A downstream filtration needs at least a good biological treatment like an activated slude process to achieves removal value up to 98%. We assume
that a sufficient oxygene supply is given through the aeration (without any anaerobic death zones) to allowed a good degradation of the bacteria.
Even if small volume can be obtained by increasing the activated sludge concentration, CERAFILTEC recommended a minimum retention time in the
biology of 4 hours. To ensure a stable process, the TSS for the activated sludge in the biology step is consider to be max. 10 g/l which correlate to a
TSS of 12.5 g/l in the filtration step as well as in the circulated sludge. If other concentration are required the values will be checked.

Description of Process Steps

1. Legend

SRP Sludge Circulation Pump(s) BWP Backwash Pump(s)

FP Filtration Pump(s) CDP Chemical Dosing Pump(s)
BL Blower(s)

2. Process Description
The MBR process with activated sludge uses membranes to separate the suspended biomass from the biologically cleaned water. The main
steps are described below:

1. Pre-treatment (Project specific):

Raw water to be pumped to pre-treatment and/or biological treatment process step(s) before entering by gravity flow (recommended) up to
CERAFILTEC filtration train(s);

2. Filtration:
Filtration process with defined sludge circulation back to biological treatment;
Filtered water to be partially collected in filtered water tank - remaining filtered water to be used as output water or to be transferred to
subsequent process steps (e.g. desalination by reverse osmosis/nano-filtration);

3. Backwash:
BW occurs every 5 - 20 minutes. It can be combined with a relaxation time. Selected filtration train will stop filtration mode (remaining train(s)
still in filtration mode).

4. Chemical cleaning in-situ: (CEB)

Backwashing with chemical solution followed by a soaking time (few minutes); the procedure can be repeated several time to intensive the
cleaning;
Cleaning solution to be prepared with filtered water or service water
CEB process parameteers like concentrarion and time need to be optimised by the operator. Values mentioned in the design are only reference.

5. Intensive Chemical Cleaning: (CIP)

For intensive cleaning it is recommended to pump out the biomass and to store it for the duration of the cleaning process. The cleaning process
is similar to in-situ cleaning procedure and can be intensified with the repetition of several cleaning cycles.
After completion of cleaning cycle, the stored sludge should be pump into filtration tank, then re-start of filtration mode.

5. Project specific notes

Due to the previous biological step before entering in the UF, the hydraulic design didn't consider max. conditions.
CERAFILTEC assume that the incoming flow for one train can be buffered during cleaning sequence for a maximum time of 2 hours
Nevertheless, CERAFILTEC recommend to design the filtration tank height with the possibility to increase the number of module.
