9.0 WORK METHODOLOGY

9.1 General

a) Before work start, contractor need to prepare request for inspection (RFI) for pipe culvert
installation works and need to be approved from consultant. Consultant will inspect and
check whether the situation at site in good order before starting work such as the condition
of the machine, the environment of site and other related issue.

b) All submission of the RFI need to be submitted with JKR SBP Form. The form must be
relevant with the work activities.

c) All of the work activities must be supervise by site engineer and assist by site supervisor to
make sure all activities working according to the specification and standard.

d) Site engineer/Site supervisor needs to identify all of the utilities before start work and make
sure the scope of work do not disturb the utilities and be careful with the utilities during
works.

9.2 RC Pipe Culvert (Open Trench Method)

9.2.1 Survey Works

a) Survey works to be carried out to determine the longitudinal profile and layout of the
stream which needs to be plotted and superimpose with the cross section of the
proposed road and it will be submitted to consultant for approval.

b) The alignment, skew, gradient, and level to be determined prior excavation works and
the peg by surveyor.

c) Shop drawing to be submitted to consultant for approval.

9.2.2 Inspection of materials (RC pipe culvert)

a) Carry out receiving inspection of materials received at site

b) Pipe culvert shall conform to the requirement of MS 881 or equivalent and shall be
supplied by approved supplier.

c) Rubber rings for spigot and socket pipes shall comply with the requirement of the
contract specification.

d) Check type, size and class of pipe culverts to be installed at each location as per
drawing.

e) The quality of materials used and the process of manufacture of precast concrete pipes
shall be subject to rejection if they fail to comply with any of the specified requirements:

- Fracture or cracks, except for a single crack which does not extend through the full
thickness of the will.
- Defects that indicated imperfect proportioning of the constituent materials.
- Surface defects indication honey combing or open texture.
- Damaged ends or distortion which would prevent making of a satisfactory joint.

9.2.3 Trench Excavation

a) Set line excavation.

b) Pipe culverts which are to be constructed at the existing ground level and under and
embankment shall have the fill constructed and compacted to a height of at least 300mm
above the top of the pipe or to subgrade level, whichever is the lower and then a trench
shall be excavated to receive the culvert.

c) Excavator will be used to excavate the construction area. The excavation will be done in
shoring way as stated in figure 2 below in order to make sure there is no slope failure
happen during the construction process. The width and dimension of excavate area to
place the pipe culvert can be referred in the figure 2 (refer hp). The details of access
culvert can be referred in the figure 2.

d) If working area is soft or swampy, where the removal of unsuitable materials is indicated
in the drawings, the procedure shall be as follows:

- The unsuitable materials shall be excavated and removed to a depth directed

by the P.D’s.
- The excavated area shall be backfilled with approved granular material and
compacted to give adequate support to the pipe.
- The prepare surface shall provide firm foundation of uniform density
throughout the length of culvert to receive the pipe culvert.

e) The sand bedding materials shall be laid on the prepare trench to the height of the
underside of pipe, forming depressions where necessary to accommodate the pipe
spigots and the height of the bedding materials as per approved construction drawing.

f) The sand bedding materials shall be placed at trench in layers 300mm compacted
thickness and compacted by 1 tonne compacted roller or compacted in one operation by
saturation and vibration to achieve a compaction of 95% maximum dry density.

g) The invert level must be check before culvert placing.

h) Along the excavation process, safety issue is compulsory to be obey and followed by all
persons involved to minimize the risk. Safety officer need to check the working area and
to make sure there is no potential of risk happened.

9.2.4 Installation of R.C Pipe Culverts

a) Pipes shall not be laid until their class, size and length called for each location have been
approved by the consultant.

b) Pipes shall be laid true to line and level and to follow the load line provide by suppliers.
The culvert pipe will be lift and install by using mobile crane.

c) Pipes shall be laid in an upstream direction with the socket leading upstream.

d) Rubber ring joints shall be installed strictly in accordance with the manufacture’s
instruction. Prior to joining, rubber rings and jointing surface shall be cleaned of all
contaminants.

e) The spigot of each pipe shall be inserted concentrically in the socket of the one
previously laid, and the pipe adjusted and fixed in its correct position with the spigot
accurately centred in the socket care shall be taken to see that the rubber ring is
positioned exactly vertically.

9.2.5 Backfilling

a) Carry out backfilling using approved type of fill materials in accordance to the
specifications which is granular materials.

b) All culvert constructed in trench, backfilling with granular material as specified placed and
shall be compacted every 150mm in layers equally. Process of compaction shall be done
by 1 tonne compactor roller to achieve a compaction of 95% maximum dry density.

c) Light compaction equipment such as mechanical tampers may be operated above pipe
culverts after a minimum of 300mm of cover has been placed and compacted.

9.3 Headwalls, Wing walls and Apron slab

a) Reinforcement shall be cut and bend according to the confirmed bending schedule of
bars, drawings, and requirement of contract specification for slab and walls.

b) Reinforcement bar shall be placed and maintained in the positions indicated in the
drawings, to the required tolerances. All lap length shall be 42 times the diameter of
reinforcement bar.

c) Formwork shall be constructed to the correct position shape, profile and dimension as
design and approved by the engineers and consultant respectively. The formwork shall
be carried out according to the requirements of the contract specifications and drawings.

d) Concrete grade 25/20 shall be directly supply from mix batching plants. The concrete
shall be deposited carefully in its intended position as quickly as possible after being
