Cpt: Nehemiah
The book of Nehemiah in the Old Testament recounts the bravery of Nehemiah and the
story of the wall of Jerusalem. In this story everything is restored, the temple, the wall of
Jerusalem, the covenant, and the people. Many would say that one should take inspiration of the
Characteristics of Nehemiah and be more like him. In this essay, we will talk about the story of
Nehemiah, alongside some information about the book in the bible and many other important
parts in the story while simultaneously connecting the story of Nehemiah to the New Testament.
Nehemiah and information on how the book was written. To begin, Nehemiah is the last
historical books out of the twelve—the author of the book of the Nehemiah and Ezra. The date
the book was written was between 445 BC and 420 BC. The name Nehemiah has a beautiful
meaning which is “Yahweh comforts.” One of the many selfless things Nehemiah had done was
leave his job of 20 years as the cupbearer of the Persian king to go help the people of Jerusalem.
Which means he left the easy life of the palace to help others.
The overall theme of the book Nehemiah is God’s protection for us, the importance of
faithfulness in keeping the Mosaic law and in worship and How God can work miracles from the
sidelines. We see this narrative or idea through the many chapters and scenes. Some of examples
are in Nehemiah 1:4-6 it shows us that the lord heard our prayers and gives us guidance, in
Fahmy 2
Nehemiah 2:8 it shows us how God works, Nehemiah 4:14 God protects his people, Nehemiah
To provide an overview of the story, in chapters 1-2 it talks about the Preparation to
reconstruct the wall, Chapter 3-7 mentions Reconstruction of the wall and thankfully in chapter.
8-10 – Renewal of the Covenant and finally in chapter 11-13 we talk about Obedience to the
Covenant. Nehemiah was the cupbearer of the kind of Persia, Nehemiah lived a calm and simple
life, once he heard that the people of Jerusalem were in trouble and suffering because of the city
wall being broken. He asked the king to let him go away for 12 years so he could build the wall
and help them and was asking for supplies to help him with this journey. This was extremely
dangerous for Nehemiah because He could have gotten killed for asking for a break.
Nehemiah’s supervised the reconstruction of the temple, and it only took 52 days (about 1 month
3 weeks) to rebuild the wall, but it took the rest of the 12 years to save the city of Jerusalem and
bring it back to normal. Once Nehemiah had left Jerusalem after helping them regain strength
There were some significant advents that are especially important in the book of
Nehemiah that us as readers and Christians can learn and take inspiration. The main point I will
be talking about is Nehemiah’s prayer to God in chapter 1 verse 5-11, “I pray, Lord God of
heaven, O great and awesome God, You who keep Your covenant and mercy with those who
love [c]You and observe Your commandments, please let Your ear be attentive and Your eyes
open, that You may hear the prayer of Your servant which I pray before You now, day and night,
for the children of Israel Your servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel which we
have sinned against You. Both my father’s house and I have sinned. We have acted corruptly
against You and have not kept the commandments, statutes, or ordinances which You

commanded Your servant, Moses. Remember, I pray, the word that You commanded Your
servant Moses, saying, ‘If you [e]are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations; but if you
return to Me, and keep My commandments and do them, though some of you were cast out to the
farthest part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and bring them to the place which
I have chosen as a dwelling for My name.’ Now these are Your servants and Your people, whom
You have redeemed by Your great power, and by Your strong hand. O Lord, I pray, please let
Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant and to the prayer of Your servants who desire
to fear Your name; and let Your servant prosper this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight
of this man.” In verse 5 Nehemiah remembers God's attributes in verse 6 shows humility, in
verse 8 it quotes scripture and in verse 1 He prayed for the king. Often when we pray, we forget
to show humility, to remember God's works and to pray for others Sometimes we just complain
to God about our troubles, but a good guideline for us could be step 1 Remember Gods glorious
works, step 2 Show humility as we are sinners' step 3 quote scriptures step 4 pray for others and
in between these steps you could mention your struggles just as Nehemiah did.
Looking back at the Information I have found I could connect Nehemiah to Christ, they
have many similarities. For example, Nehemiah left the Palace and Jesus left his throne in
Heaven, Nehemiah prayed & fasted, and Jesus prayed & fasted, Nehemiah entered on an animal
and Jesus entered on a donkey and finally Nehemiah Wept and rebuked and wept and rebuked
for Jerusalem.
In conclusion, Nehemiah is not just a historical book it is also a less in faith. Through
what Nehemiah has done we can see he is truly a strong and brave man, and he has inspired all
of us to Trust in God’s guidance. His story continues to resonate with believers today reminding
