Force and Motion Facts
Law of Inertia
● Inertia is the ability of large entities to resist changes in their
state of motion. According to Newton's first law of motion, an
external force must be applied in order for an object to begin
moving, stop moving, or change direction.
● Galileo Galilei first proposed the law of inertia for Earth's
horizontal motion, and René Descartes later generalized it.
Although the fundamental premise and starting point of classical
mechanics is the notion of inertia, the untrained eye finds it to
be less than immediately clear.

Effects of Force
Motion is caused by five different effects of force. All you need to
do is illustrate each image's force needed and its effects.
When two or more items interact with one another, a force is at work. When
another person applies this force to an item, the object's state of motion
changes in some way.
Contact Forces
The different types of contact forces are already defined for you.
Your task now is to identify the type of contract force in these
given examples. You can do it!
CONTACT
FORCES
Friction Force
FORCES
Applied Force
Non-Contact Forces
Non-contact forces include: GRAVITATIONAL, MAGNETIC, and
ELECTRICAL FORCES. These are forces that are dominantly
produced by nature. Answer the questions below.
When considering visiting worlds other than our own, the gravitational pull
has a profound impact on humans. The actions we can then perform may also
be impacted. Open the link and see how much you weigh on different planets:

On what planets do you think you can least move? Explain. Answers may
vary: Planets with low gravity slow down your movements, so lesser
movement. Planets with strong gravity will make all things heavy, so the force
exerted will be needed much more.
On which planet do you think you can move best? Explain. Earth - Your
body is attuned to its gravity.
PROBLEM 1:
Emily is playing with a toy car on a flat table. She pushes the car with a certain force and then
lets it go. Initially, the car moves with a constant velocity of 0.5 m/s. Suddenly, a book falls off
the table and lands directly in front of the car. How will the car's motion be affected by the
book's presence? Will it stop or change direction?

eventually comes to a stop. Explain this phenomenon using the law of inertia.

PROBLEM 1:
Emily is playing with a toy car on a flat table. She pushes the car with a certain force and then lets it go. Initially,
the car moves with a constant velocity of 0.5 m/s. Suddenly, a book falls off the table and lands directly in front
of the car. How will the car's motion be affected by the book's presence? Will it stop or change direction?
Solution:
According to the law of inertia, the car will continue moving in a straight line with a constant
velocity unless acted upon by an external force. In this case, the book falling in front of the
car will exert a force on it, causing it to stop or change its motion.
If the book falls directly in front of the car, it will collide with the book. The force of the
collision will depend on the mass and speed of the car, as well as the mass of the book.
Assuming the car has a higher mass than the book, it will exert a force on the book, pushing it
away. However, the car's motion will be affected by this collision.
PROBLEM 2:
A ball is placed on a flat table. When a person gives it a quick push, the ball rolls and eventually comes to a stop.
Explain this phenomenon using the law of inertia.
Solution:
the ball initially remains at rest due to inertia. The external force applied by the person
overcomes this inertia and sets the ball in motion. However, the opposing forces of friction
eventually bring the ball to a stop, balancing out the applied force and the ball's inertia.
PROBLEM 3:
A book is placed on a table. When the tablecloth is pulled quickly, the cloth is able to be removed
without moving the book. Explain this phenomenon using the law of inertia.
Solution:
Due to the high velocity of the pull, the cloth experiences rapid acceleration.
Now, because of the law of inertia, the book tends to resist any change in its state of
motion. The book has a certain amount of inertia, which is the tendency to maintain
its current state of rest. As the cloth is pulled quickly, it encounters a smaller amount
of friction with the book's surface compared to the force applied to the cloth.

this acceleration?
SOLUTION:
Substituting the given values into the
formula, we can calculate the net force (F):
F = 1200 kg * 2.5 m/s^2 F = 3000 N
Therefore, the net force acting on the This means that the harder you hit the ball,

Solution:
According to Newton's third law of motion, the force exerted by Samantha on the rope will
have an equal and opposite force exerted by David. Therefore, the magnitude of the force
David exerts will also be 100 Newtons.
What are the possible equal and opposite reactions in each situation?

APPLICATIONS
Forces and motion are utilized in various medical procedures and devices. For
instance, the principles of force are applied in surgeries, where precision
instruments are used to cut, manipulate, or remove tissues. Medical imaging
MEDICAL technologies like X-rays, MRI, and ultrasound rely on the motion of waves or
APPLICATIONS particles to create detailed images of internal body structures.
