Exercise 1: Subject-Predicate Agreement


A. Choose the correct form of the verb in the following sentences!
1. Neither Habibie nor Naufal is going to the play tonight.
2. Anything is better than going to another movie tonight.
3. Skating is becoming more popular every day.
4. Everybody who has a fever must go home immediately.
5. Your glasses were in the classroom last night.
6. A number of reporters were at the conference yesterday.
7. There were some people at the meeting last night.
8. The committee has already reached a decision.
9. A pair of jeans was in the washing machine this morning.
10. Each student has answered the first three questions.

B. Fill in the blank with is or are.


11. Alumni of the university are invited to the graduation ceremony.
12. These bacteria are being studied by university scientists.
13. English is heard all over the world.
14. The Portuguese are fortunate to have such a beautiful coastline.
15. Many Vietnamese are living in the US.

Exercise 2: Participles
Choose either present participle or past participle
1. The broken dishes lay on the floor.
2. The trembling children were given a blanket for warmth.
3. Compassionate friends tried to console the crying children.
4. The interesting tennis match caused a great deal of excitement.
5. When James noticed the burning building, he notified the fire department
immediately.
6. The excited passengers jumped into the lifeboats when notified that the ship was
sinking.
7. The wind made such frightening noises that the children ran to their parents’ room.
8. We saw the advancing army from across town.
9. Mrs. Hilmie’s approving smile let us know that our speeches were well done.
10. The cleaned shoes were placed in the sun to dry.
Exercise 3: Clauses
Adjective Clause:
1. No one knew the men who were standing outside the room.
2. Pure gold, which is easily bent, is rarely used for jewelry.
3. The girl’s family disapproves of the boy whom she wants to marry.

Noun Clause:
1. The weatherman predicted that it would rain.
2. What the magician did surprised the crowd.
3. The policeman asked where I lived.

Do the exercise as given in the example: Where did he go? I know where he went.
1. Who will be elected president? I’m not sure who will be elected president.
2. Whose book is it? They haven’t discovered whose book it is.
3. How much will it cost? The shop keeper told me how much it will cost.
4. How was the murder committed? The police are still investigating how the murder
was committed.
5. Where did they spend the vacation? Ira told me where they spent the vacation.

Adverb Clause:
1. Farmers use irrigation so that their crops will not die.
2. Copper is a much used conductor because it is strong and cheap.
3. The man would have died if the doctors had not operated.

If Clause:
Exercise A
1. We would need a car if we lived in the country. (live)
2. If I sold my used car, I would not get much money from it (not/get)
3. I would have fixed your bicycle if I had had (have) a screwdriver of the proper size.
4. I would have made (make) an e-mail at that time, if there had not been trouble with
my laptop.
5. Sally would have answered the phone if she had been (be) in her room at that time.
6. If I had had (have) enough money, I would have gone with you to the expo.

Exercise B
Change the following into third type of conditional sentences!
1. If we have money to afford the electronic device, we’ll buy it.
If we had had money to afford the electronic device, we would have bought it.
2. If Mr. Adams retires this year, he’ll move to California.
If Mr. Adams had retired this year, he would have moved to California.
3. If you remember your code number, you’ll be able to use the automatic teller.
If you had remembered your code number, you would have been able to use the
automatic teller.

4. If they speed up the process, I’ll get my loan by December.

5. She can not pay the bill if she does not find it.
