CHAPTER -1
1. INTRODUCTION OF THE REPORT
Internships provide students with an opportunity to put in to practice skills they have learned
while in school. In addition, students should have an opportunity to enhance those skills, obtain
the perspective of a work environment and benefit from a mentor or supervisor's experience and
advice. Kotebe Mechanical Workshop is one of the Ethiopian Electric Utility branches it is producing
necessary resources and carrying out maintenance to get better service delivery to the product and service
users.

1.1 Background of the organization

The mechanical workshop sub branch of EEU koteba branch this is a big from all branch
mechanical shop EEU, this industry are start at the time of middle 1970 E.C to give for electrical
power utility concert pool, after some years this industry are change in to automotive and
mechanical work shop. It used producing necessary resources and carrying out maintenance
work to improve service delivery to the customers. This work shop are doing its work in so many
areas depend up on the Requirement of the task let say in the first one is still doing great work
for all regions EEU districts and in main office for several years in the production and
maintenance of metal, machine shop and woodworking.

Mechanical Workshop is a place where students acquire knowledge on the operation of various
processes involved in manufacturing and production. The Workshop Practice course makes
students competent in handling practical work in engineering environment and also mechanical
workshop supports our undergraduate teaching and internship activities.

1.2 purpose of the organization

This organization is purposely designed to solve the EEU vehicle maintenance cost problems and to
manufacturing made up of metal and furniture making to protect the electrical breakers or transformers
from external hazards. The following statements’ are the main function of mechanical workshop
kotebe branch;-

1.3 Data collection methods

Data collection is the process of gathering, measuring, and analyzing accurate data from a variety
of relevant sources to find answers to research problems, answer questions, evaluate outcomes,
and forecast trends and probabilities. Our report can be writing by using of primary and
secondary data collection method and techniques.

Primary data collection is the process of collecting data from a live source, such as a human
being. The goal of primary data collection is to collect data that is as accurate and complete as
possible. This data can be used to improve the quality of life for people and the environment.

The following are primary methods of collecting data

 By interviewing the company workers

 By observing when the operator work

 Take photo and videos

 Write the idea of supervisor at the time of give some rule and regulations about how to
work ,what to work and where to work etc
 Interviews and Focus Groups
 Observation
 Online Tracking and Forms
 Social Media Monitoring

2
Secondary Data Collection

Secondary data collocation is that uses data that was collected by someone else. In other words,
whenever you conduct research using data that already exists, you are conducting secondary
research. On the other hand, examples of Secondary Data Collection are the following;-

 Financial Statements
 Sales Reports
 Retailer/Distributor/Deal Feedback
 Customer Personal Information (e.g., name, address, age, contact info)
 Business Journals
 Government Records (e.g., census, tax records, Social Security info)
 Trade/Business Magazines
 The internet
 Not published Machine operator written document

1.4 Scope of our internship

The Scope of Work is to indicate the type of activities in which the intern will likely be engaged.
It is not meant to limit or constrain the intern's opportunities and the employer is encouraged to
provide a breadth of experiences for the intern.

Our focused area is most of the time we was span in machine shop and welding shop because
we are manufacturing technology trainers our training is focused in how to assembling materials
by using SMAW and rivet and also we trained machine operation like facing ,turning, threading
,cutting ,bending ,boring and grinding operation by using of lathe machine ,milling machine, face
grinding machine ,tool grinding machine, power shear machine and rolling machine etc. this is
our focused area when we are stay in EEU mechanical shop kotebe branch.

CHAPTER -2
2. OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANIZATION
When we go to the company for the first times were visiting all workshops and introducing with
all mechanic and also try to now safety require to all workshops. In the company we could see
the production area which works very closely to achieve our goal during their stay, this kotebe
branch electrical utility vehicle maintenance work shop are there are two main shops and five
sub shops, the main shop are Automotive shop and Mechanical shop. The sub shop are under
auto shop two shops like part servicing and maintenance work shop and vehicles lubrication
workshop and also in mechanical work shop are three sub workshops the name of this work shop
are the first one machine workshop the second one is welding workshop the other is furniture
making workshop.

2.1 Brief overview of the kotebe mechanical workshop

Mainly we have been working in mechanical shop that is the main work shop in the factory to
perform the production activity. In this shop there is three main shops machine shop and welding
shop, and also the last one is furniture making work shop, in machines shop are includes like
lathe, drill machine, shaper machine, power hack saw ,boring machine e t c. those machine are so
many operations can be operate such as cutting, drilling, facing, turning, grinding, boring,
threading, key way are performed in this machine workshop. in welding shop are also it have the
following machines like SMAW welding, oxy-acetylene cutting machine, sheet metal cutting
machine, sheet metal rolling machine, sheet metal banding machine, die punching machine,
multi cut cutter machine e. t. c . in this shop also different operation can be apply like forming of
metal, assembling of the metal and also cutting operation are occurred in this shop. As a
mechanic most of the time we have been execute my work tasks in welding shop and machine
work shop but we was attended in whole section of the factory for different activity.

4
Before we start working on machines and welding shop are we have to know the following
things.

Safety in the shop - Shop safety means protecting our selves and others from possible danger.
So there are safety rules that we could know carefully. When we work in the shops we should
know the following things first wear PPE, know colure of Shop layout, remove Faulty working
habits, Work clothes, Safety materials.

Measuring tools -Measuring tool that is found in the shop includes calipers, screw pitch gages,
dial gage etc. Caliper are used to measuring thickness and length of work jobs and Screw pitch
is highly fool proof very effective and fairly accurate instrument used to identify or cheek the
pitch of the treads.

Machine maintenance tools - Maintenance work shop tools are tools that are used for fixing
different machine components. Tools that uses in the company are hand tools and power tools.
Hand tools are the mechanics hand supplies the energy to operate them. A hand tool includes
screw driver, hammers, pullers, pliers, wrenches. Power tool means it is operated by electrical,
hydraulic and pneumatic power supply.

2.1.1 Machine shop

There are accomplished different tasks in the machine shop by using the following machines
lathe, drill machine, surface grinding machine .boring machine, horizontal milling machine,
power hack sew machine, hydraulic press bending machine and also there are another shaper
machine, portable grinding machine. In the lathe machines there are different tasks that have
been working, among them, Manufacturing of nuts and bolts and also used to turning, facing,
tapering, threading. The other machine is Drill machine in this machine are used to drill any
material and also boring machine are used to enlarging of drilled holes. Generally, some of the
machines components are so many applications it has to manufacture like lathe, drill, Milling,
shaper machine and grinding machine.

5
Figure 2.1 kotebe mechanical machines workshop

Lathe machine is a machine tool that removes the undesired material from a rotating work piece
in the form of chips with the help of a single cutting tool that is traversed across the work and
can be feed deep into the work. The following late machine operation are most of the time
perform in koteba mechanical shop like facing, turning, threading, boring and chamfering, taper
turning ,drilling operations.

Figure 2.2 Thread cutting operation on lathe machine

6
Drilling (Radial drilling machine) is a material-removing or cutting process in which the multi
cutting tool uses a drill bit to cut a hole of circular cross-section in solid materials. We also
perform drilling operation in lathe machine too, but drill machine is made for this specific drill
operations, so where we need bulk of drilling operation we go for drilling machine. A drilling
machine is used to form a hole of different sizes on a job 5-25mm diameter drill bit drilling is
perform in the shop. Drilling speed are selected by the following rule and regulation or
variables, Diameter of drill bit, hardness or softness of the work piece, feed and depth of cut.

Electrical punching machine it is one of the basic tools to punch the U-channel mild steel
rectangular, square shape and circular shape depend up on the require design it makes by the
punching die. Most of the tame this U-channel is used for electrical pooling and also the pool are
assembling by bolt and nut each other.

Milling Cutters there are a lot of cutting tools used in the milling process. The milling cutters
named end mills have special cutting surfaces on their end surfaces so that they can be placed
onto the work piece by drilling. These also have extended cutting surfaces on each side for the
purpose of peripheral milling. The milling cutters have small cutters at the end corners. The
cutters are made from highly resistant materials that are durable and produce less friction and
also milling cutting tool multi point cutting tool it used for facing, drilling, countering, boring
and make keyway etc.

Figure 2.3 horizontal cutting milling machine

7
2.1.2 Welding workshop
This workshop is one of the basic mechanical workshops of the organization in this shop so
many operation are perform like assembling by using of SMAW welding and sheet metal
forming tools like bending, Rolling machines and also in this shop are occur like cutting
operation by using sheet metal cutting machine, oxy acetylene cutting machine and also multi
cutter cutting machine. The other operation of in this workshop are perform punching operation
by using electro mechanical press machine used to punching square shape ,circular shape depend
up on size of the die shape of the die.

Figure 2.4 kotebe mechanical welding workshop

 A welding machine is a device used to join materials together. Welding machines

produce heat that melts metal parts so that these parts can be joined. Thus, when it cools,
it becomes a fixed and resistant joint. Welding is a fabrication process that joins
materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by using high heat to melt the parts together
and allowing them to cool, causing fusion. Most of the time EEU mechanical welding
workshop use SMAW welding to assemble the LTZ pipe and sheet metal to produce
electrical controller like breaker and transformer safety.

8
 X-ray oxyacetylene cutting machine The most common gas welding process the
equipment is relatively inexpensive and simple, generally employing the combustion of
acetylene in oxygen to produce a cutting flame temperature of about 3100 °C
(5600 °F).The flame. We see in this workshop is X-ray oxyacetylene cutting machine this
machine is the basic function is read the paper drawing by X-ray lines after that cut the
required shape either square or circle and any irregular shapes.
 Sheet metal forming and cutting machines this is one of the basic important to
manufacturing work because there are four major methods used to shape sheet metal.

 Bending; - it is forming process by using of hydraulic pipe bender machine and

electrical sheet metal bender to perform our tasks like LTZ shape and square or
rectangles.
 Shearing; - it is cutting process by using of electrical shear and manual shear
machine to performs the required shapes.
 Rolling;-it is forming process by using of power tools and hand tools to change
the shape of the metal by using like sheet metal rolling machine.

Figure 2.5 Big Sheet Metal Cutting Electrical Shear Machine

9
2.2 Major activities and products of the mechanical shop
There are so many activities are performing in mechanical shop by using power tools and hand
tools. The main major activities are;

 Threading, facing ,turning and gearing by using lath machine and milling machine
 LTZ shape Banding operation by using sheet metal bender up to (150-300mm) length
 Rolling operation by using sheet metal roller machine thickness of a metal is up to 3.5mm
 Welding operation by using SMAW only
 Cutting operation by using sheet metal cutter machine and hand tools like hacksaw
 Cut any shape (circle, square, irregular shape ) depend up on the given drawing by using
X-ray oxy acetylene cutting machine

The main products of mechanical work shop to give their customers are;

 Maintenances of body of vehicles

 Produce high way metal electrical pool made up of galvanized and alloy steel
 Furniture making instrument like office table and electrical breaker controller from sun
and external man made faults
 Made up of metal to protect the transformer and breakers hoper from hazards special
mount in condominium and governmental and nongovernmental office
 Create new modification or reform the existing part of the objects by using milling ,lathe
and boring machines
 Produce different thickness and size LTZ shapes pipes
 Creating new technology basic fundamental to the EEU organization

10
2.3 Organizational structure of the mechanical shop
Organizational structure is the method by which work flows through an organization and allows
groups to work together within their individual functions to manage tasks.

An organizational structure defines how job titles, roles, and responsibilities are assigned within
a company. It helps determine who reports to whom, and who makes decisions about what.
Startups often have a matrix organizational structure, with different departments working
together on projects. The following tables are indicates the organizational structure of
mechanical workshop kotebe branch only;-

Mechanical shop head office

Finance office HRM office TQM and Rep office from three shop Auditor office
supervisors

CHAPTER -3
3. WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED?
3.1 What Procedures have been used while performing tasks?
While performing my tasks at the company, we have watched how everything is going in steps,
and how each task is done by its own working procedure. In this section of my report we will try
to describe some of the procedures we have performed while performing my work task. We have
seen starting from setting out to finishing work. During my internship season there are some
activities that carried out in the company and office those activities are held in this work
procedure
 First we accepted any kind of tasks that our supervisor gave it to us
 Before performing the task, we study it carefully with compatible things
 If we encountered problems to understand the given task, we asked for help the
 Professionals around us to understand and too rich on solutions
 Then we perform the tasks
 Then give to them to check up
 After we finished the task we reported to our supervisor
 Finally, our supervisor had approved our work

3.2 What we have gained from the Internship?

These 45days of internship practice brings out a range of benefits and positive impacts. The work
experience is extremely valuable to us both in terms of academic performance and employability
skills. This Internship holds considerable value for our personal and professional development,
and encouragement. At a high level, the internship benefits we got includes Improving practical
skill, Up grading theoretical knowledge, Improving interpersonal communication skill ,
Improving team playing skill, Improving leader ship skill, Understanding work ethics,
entrepreneur ship skills.
The intern ship benefits for us improved skills and knowledge, including ‘softer’ employability
skills, and specific technical skills and competencies. It also increases our knowledge of an
industry or sector of company, allowing us to make better informed decisions about future career
choices.

12
3.3 Improving practical skill
In terms of practical techniques, we have seen that learning theoretically more difficult than
learning in practically, but we realize learning is use full, for every work, and that make us to
understand thing easily. Moreover, we learned simply how to change theoretical knowledge to
practical knowledge. But when we start practicing it was a little beat difficult and after some
time we passed it with the real joy. In this internship we get the:
 Ability to identify and select proper material tools, equipment’s and machines
 Ability to set tools, work piece and machine for desired operations
 Ability to use safety equipment’s and follow safety procedures during operations

When we was learned from internship from mechanical shop there are so many abilities we was
trained like;
Lathe machine facing operation is an operation of machining the end of a work piece that is
perpendicular to the rotating axis to produce the desired part length and a smooth face surface by
removing a thin layer of material.

Lathe turning machine facing operation is the most common lathe machining operation during
the turning process; a single point cutting tool removes material from the outer diameter of a
rotating work piece. The main objective of turning is to reduce the work piece diameter to the
desired dimension.

Lathe chamfering operation is the operation of beveling the extreme end of the work piece.
The form tool used for taper turning may be used for this purpose. Chamfering is an essential
operation after thread cutting so that the nut may pass freely on the threaded work piece.

Lathe Thread cutting operation on the lathe is a process that produces a helical ridge of
uniform section on the work piece. This is performed by taking successive cuts with a threading
tool bit (60 degree) the same shape as the thread form required. In order to produce an accurate
thread, it is important that the lathe, the cutting tool and the work be set up properly. When
cutting right threads, the movement of the saddle with the tool should be from the right to the left
and at the time the spindle rotates in the normal way and when cutting left threads the movement
of the saddle should be from the left to the right.
 Welding operation different types of position and joints

13
 Different types of machine operation like drill machine , milling machine and punching
machine

Figure 3.1 SMAW welding operation and lathe turning operation

3.4 Improving Theoretical Knowledge

The main purpose of this internship program is to help the interns develop or improve our
practical knowledge by applying the theoretical knowledge that we have learned in class the last
3 years. In this internship practical program, we have seen the application of different kinds of
machines and their operation systems. Almost all machines which we know theoretically are
used on different parts of factory.

3.5 Improving interpersonal communication skill

During internship time the first work or thing should be communicate with employers and
department managers (advisors). We got from the internship the way of communication to be
honest fully and respectfully for our clients. It used to get the desired response our
communication skill should be persuade others attitude. This internship program helped me a
great deal to improve my communication skill because I got to meet a lot of people throughout
the 45day period starting from the daily labor to the project manager and with the other interns.
So in order to gain Knowledge and be an experienced one I started to get along with all of them
and ask more so my communication skill was getting better and better each day.

14
3.6 Understanding work ethics
We understood that the work ethics and what mean conform to the rules. a good person at work
should be disciplined and have to know about rules and regulations of company. We have to start
my work on time and do works honestly, then tolerate all society of the company. The benefit of
the intern ship program was interesting in the development of ethics work habit. We got a lot of
benefits from the factory. These are: -
 To be on time at work and leave work by the right time
 To be responsible in analyzing and interpreting, gathering of data
 In addition to this we practiced the skill of being loyal and honest when doing
professional judgments.

3.7 Entrepreneurship skill

The basic entrepreneur skills that these people have and we noticed are business, planning, risk
assessment, team building. A wide range of skill is seen as entrepreneurial and useful to
entrepreneur; these include those personal traits skill:
 Self-motivated and disciplined
 Adaptable
 Innovative thinking and creative
 Able to take responsibility and make decision
 The ability to work under pressure.

3.8 Improving leadership skill

In my opinion the best character of a good leader is not just ordering around his teams but by
coordinating and leading the way and show his/her team how to do it. and I have seen this
quality from the welding operator ,machine operators and supervisors learn from it a lot on how
a great leader should be perform.

15

CHAPTER -5
5. RECOMMENDATION and CONCLUSION
5.1 Conclusion
In conclusion, we have learned that this internship program helped us greatly to address the gap
and apply the theoretical knowledge we have gained in University to practical skills. Also we
have developed team playing, communications, leadership and interpersonal skills throughout
this internship programs and enabled us to improve our self-confidence. On the other hand, the
universities must work a lot to convince different companies throughout the country the
importance of internship. Generally, the practical attachment has given me the chance to see the
industry environment and gave us practical knowledge.

5.2 Recommendation
Despite the fact that we was in Ethiopia Electrical Utility Vehicles Maintenance Transport and
Administration Workshop Kotebe Branch department mechanical workshop we observed some
faults and we tried to give respective professional recommendations on the quality of products ,
maintenance and perform kiazen principles on the shop and environment by this cause it
happened obstacles of the operators and low quality of our products. Theoretical knowledge of
construction principles is very important. But, the ability to use these fundamental principles to
solve problems at hand is more fundamental. That is why learning to change the ideas into
practice is recommended.
