Reflection
Assignment 1

Before the lesson | Deciding what to try in the classroom, and how to do that (20 points)

What are you going to try? (Brief description of the activity or strategy and the unit where it appeared and the module). (at least 40
words)
I am going to try ranking activity. This activity is appeared in unit 3 module 4. It is a Group discussion activity which learners have to arrange a
list of items in ranked order and learn about comparison, deduction, sequencing and arrangement. They should try to arrange whole numbers
from smallest to largest, steps in a scientific procedure or other items in order of preference.

Why did you choose this activity/strategy? Why/how do you think it will be useful for your learners? (at least 40 words)
Because it is a great activity for learners to develop their critical thinking skills. It’s also a good way for them to practise communication, to
build speaking fluency and to practise or learn specific vocabulary for some lessons.
A ranking is also a good activity to practise or learn language functions such as expressing opinions, giving reasons, persuasion and
disagreement.

What problems might you face using it with your learners? What solutions can you suggest? (at least 40 words)
I think some leaners might not participate so to solve this problem I would introduce roles for each student in the group(for example, one to

make sure all are contributing; one to take notes on decisions; one to summarise reasons for decisions, etc.).I also have to make sure that
each group have a good balance of students that can guide the discussion, help each other's, etc.
Other problems like time limits and using the chosen vocabulary can be solved by well-organized task and making sure the groups reach an
agreement in the time given as well as I can add a buzzer, timer, or randomizer game element to facilitate group play. Furthermore, I give
students time to practise specific vocabulary, make sure that I include these words in the items that are most likely to cause discussion .

How will this activity/strategy fit within your lesson (in what stage of the lesson)? What will the teacher and learners say and do? (at least
60 words)

I start explaining the lesson then present the vocabulary items that is related to the lesson and will be included in the activity. I explain the
task Information and ask my students to focus on speaking and listening to each other. I arrange mainly the group activity which may go
through a sequence from individual to pairs to groups to whole class for more repetition. On the board I also write some useful phrases for
giving opinions, agreeing and disagreeing. For example: I think, In my opinion, I agree/disagree because …etc.
I Put the learners in pairs and Ask them to rank the items individually. I Monitor and help where necessary then ask a few pairs to share their
ranking and give reasons for their choices and try to come to an agreement on a joint ranking. To facilitate the activity, I can join groups as a
participant in order to ask clarification questions, model useful phrases for expressing opinions and model strategies to guide the discussion in
useful directions.
