Job Description

Job Title: Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in Embedded Computing


and Machine Learning
Grade: 5 or 6
Job Family: Teaching, Research and Scholarship
Work Base: Cambridge. Please note that the post-holder will be
required to travel to other sites and overseas as
necessary.
Hours of Work: Full time, 1.0 FTE
Responsible to: Deputy Head of School

Job Purpose: To undertake teaching, research and other


academic activities within our Faculty.

Faculty background details


The School of Computing and Information Science is based on the Cambridge campus
and operates within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. We offer a range of courses
that include computer science, artificial intelligence, data science and cyber security.
The school is also host to a well-established Cisco Networking Academy. Consistent
with our strategic plans for expansion in all fields of computing, the school has recently
embarked on the validation and delivery of new courses at undergraduate and
postgraduate level, in subjects like embedded computing and artificial intelligence,
including through distance learning delivery mode. We also made investment in
growing our research portfolio, to include focus on artificial intelligence and machine
learning. The school currently has 40 academic staff and 12 doctoral research students,
some of whom are studying various applications of artificial intelligence, machine
learning and embedded computing. We have a number of successful partnerships with
industry.
This post will include teaching on subjects like: Embedded Computing, Machine
Learning Techniques, Research Methods and Prompt Engineering. You will also be
expected to contribute to external income generation, to the supervision of research
students and to the school’s research strategy.

Principal Accountabilities:

1. Contribute to the research activities of the Faculty, including through the


production of internationally recognised research outputs.
2. Contribute to teaching and related activities across a range of undergraduate
and postgraduate courses, drawing on own area(s) of expertise.

3. Design and develop teaching material across a range of modules and courses
in the subject(s), where appropriate, at both undergraduate and
postgraduate/professional levels.

4. Act as academic tutor, providing advice, guidance and support to students.

5. Act as a module leader for modules with several groups, leading the module
team and co-ordinating activities, resources and assessment.

6. Act as course leader where appropriate.

7. Contribute to planning and implementation of strategic areas such as student


recruitment, marketing, quality assurance and student retention.

8. Work with colleagues to improve and enrich the experience of our students.
Contribute to local plans in response to NSS outcomes.

9. Take a pro-active role in the recruitment and supervision of undergraduate and


postgraduate students and undertake associated duties including preparation,
marking and administration.

10. Contribute to curriculum development by identifying the need for review of


current provision and designing and developing course proposals.

11. Work to achieve our vision and values in respect of widening participation,
equality of opportunity, commitment to the health and safety of students and
colleagues and the delivery of high quality education provision.

12. Contribute to external income generation, including research, consultancy, and


networking, and the identification and development of new market
opportunities for the Department and the Faculty.

practices maintaining confidentiality, integrity, availability, accuracy, currency
and security of information as appropriate. Take personal responsibility for all

14. Such other duties temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may reasonably be


required, commensurate with your grade.
