Properties of Steam (specific enthalpy, volume, internal energy & entropy)

1. Using the steam tables, determine the enthalpy of steam per kg at 1400 kPa if the steam
is;

i. Dry saturated.
ii. 0.9 dry.

2. Determine the change in enthalpy for superheated steam at 1700 kPa and 350 ºC and a
water supply at 30 ºC , if Cp of the superheated steam is 2.41 kJ/kg ºC.

3. Using the enthalpy-entropy chart, find the enthalpy of superheated steam at a pressure
of 900 kPa and temperature of 620 ºC.

4. Using steam tables or the enthalpy-entropy chart, state whether the following values
are for wet steam, dry saturated steam or superheated steam:

(a) P=600 kPa, t = 250 ºC

(b) t = 212.4 ºC, v = 0.09954 m3/kg
(c) P = 1 MPa, h = 2650 kJ/kg
(d) P = 600 kPa, h = 3166 kJ/kg
(e) P = 2 MPa, t = 260 ºC
(f) t = 218.4 ºC, v = 0.08867 m3/kg
(g) P = 700 kPa, h = 2321.8 kJ/kg

5. From a water supply of 7 ºC at a pressure of 1.1 MPa, determine the change in enthalpy
per kg of steam required to;
(a) Form wet steam with a degree of dryness of 9.0
(b) Form dry saturated steam
(c) Form superheated steam with temperature of 205 ºC and Cp = 2.1 kJ/kg. ºC.
[hw = 2551 kJ/kg; hg = 2751 kJ/kg; hsup = 2795 kJ/kg]

6. A kilogram of water has a temperature of 37.7 ºC. Calculate the change in enthalpy to
form superheated steam at 1.85 MPa with a specific volume of 0.1275 m3
[h = 2804 kJ/kg]

7. The heat supplied to 1 kg of water at 26.7 ºC at a pressure of 1.2 MPa is 2385 kJ.
Determine the dryness fraction of the steam formed.
[x = 0.86]
8. Supply water of 1 kg at 0 ºC is changed at 1.4 MPa to wet steam with dryness fraction
of 0.82. The wet steam is then heated still further, at constant pressure, to a final volume of
0.1568 m3. Calculate the work done and the heat supplied to the steam to form superheated
steam from wet steam.
[W = 58 kJ/kg; Q = 455.7 kJ/kg]

9. 5220 kJ of heat is required to form 2 kg wet steam at 1.3 MPa from supply water at 29
ºC. The wet steam is heated still further, at constant pressure, until the temperature is 250 ºC.
Calculate the work done and the heat supplied to form superheated steam from wet steam. Cp
= 2.11 kJ/kg. ºC.
[W = 32.77 kJ/kg; Q = 178.22 kJ/kg]

10. Steam at 500 kPa and 250 ºC expands isentropically to a pressure of 70 kPa. By means
of the enthalpy – entropy chart, determine the dryness fraction of the steam.
[x = 0.97]

11. Steam at 1400 kPa and 216 ºC expands isentropically to a pressure of 100 kPa.
Calculate the dryness fraction of the steam after expansion. Cp = 2.11 kJ/kg. ºC.
[x = 0.87]

12. 3500 kJ of energy is required to compress 1 kg of steam in a piston and cylinder from
200 kPa to 500 kPa. The initial volume is 0.9602 m3 and the final volume is 0.3185 m3.
Calculate:
(a) The degree of dryness after compression
(b) The change in enthalpy
(c) The change in internal energy
(d) the change in temperature
(e) The energy flow through the system boundary
[x = 0.85; h = -339.05 kJ/kg; u = -306.26 kJ/kg; T = 1.8 ºC; Q = -3806.26 kJ/kg]
