BRIDGE ASSEMBLY
The bridge unit is designed to BS 2573, to withstand the horizontal and vertical stresses imposed during operation and to
be within the permitted deflection ratios of BS 466.
To ensure dimensional accuracy, alignment and reliability, each crane is jig assembled throughout its construction.
Girders
Bridge girders are constructed from BS EN 10 025 : 1993 grade S275 structural steel, substantially plated and stiffened
at each end, providing a rigid connection through broad gusset plates at the end carriage. Safety end travel stops are
fitted to prevent over travel of the hoist carriage. The stops engage the hoist wheel treads.
End Carriage
Each end carriage is fabricated from rolled steel to produce a stiff box section of high torsional and bending resistance.
Wheel box housings are accurately jig assembled at the end of each end carriage. Impact absorbing rubber buffers are
fitted to each end of both end carriages.
Crane wheels
The crane travels on four heavy duty type wheel assemblies, bolted into each end carriage wheel box housing. Each
wheel assembly has a double flanged wheel supported on a substantial live axle, providing a fully enclosed drive system.
Wheels are manufactured from spheroidal graphite cast iron grade 700/2, providing a high degree of impact and wear
resistance. The axle is mounted upon spherical roller bearings on either side of the wheel. Rapid wheel/assembly
removal is very simple to execute with this design.
A shaft mounted gearbox unit is keyed onto wheel axle extensions on each end of the crane bridge. Low starting torque,
normally ventilated squirrel cage motors provide smooth drive through helical reduction gear boxes fitted with resilient
torque arm mountings.
The drive motors are all class F insulation, limited to class B temperature rise, 60% ED as standard. Each of the drive
units incorporates an automatic adjustable Electro-magnetic brake to provide gradual deceleration of the crane and
prevent excessive over travelling when the control button is released.
HOIST ASSEMBLY
The hoist is from our series produced range of lifting units, specially selected for crane duty.
The crab frame for double girder cranes is supported on four double flanged runners keyed to axles which rotate in ball
journals. The crab runners are cast from grade 500/7 S.G. iron to BS 2789. The hoist unit is fixed into the main frame
and the whole assembly travels along rails welded to the top flange of each bridge girder.
On single girder cranes, the hoist unit is suspended from a trolley complete with four ball bearing single flange runners,
which travel on the bridge girder lower flange. The runners are spherically ground from 080M40 material to British
Standards

Hoist Drum
The main component of the hoist is a heavy duty, seamless, ST52 steel tube, supported on high quality anti-friction
journals fitted into the main frame side plates.
The drum is accurately machined to contain the hoist rope in a single layer. Not less than 2.5 spare
turns of rope remain on the hoist drum, when the hoist rope is fully extended.
To ensure correct rope reeving during operation, a rope guide and pressure ring are standard fitments.
Hoist Gearbox
This comprises an oil-immersed, triple reduction gear train, self-contained in a cast housing. All gears are heat treated
for maximum wear resistance. High speed gears (first and second reductions) have helical teeth configuration. The final
reduction has straight spur teeth. The shafts and pinions are precision machined from 708M40T or 722M24T material.
The spurs are cut from 817M40T or 722M24T material. Each geared shaft assembly is supported on ball or roller
bearing.
Torque input to the gearbox is through a flexible coupling and drive shaft from the hoist motor. Output torque is achieve
through a hollow shaft drive, spline fitted into the hoist drum.
Hoist Brake
The brake is of single disc, fail safe type. It is spring applied, magnetic coil release and selected for the arduous hoist
duty. The coil is direct current energised, via a rectifier, to ensure positive action.
The brake is directly fixed to the main gear case and operated on the primary drive shaft. Brake action is therefore
provided on the driven side of the flexible coupling and acts directly through the gear train onto the hoist drum.
The brake torque and gap is pre-set on factory assembly. It should not require further adjustment during its working life.
The brake is readily accessible for periodic safety checks. For additional safety, it is switched independently of the motor
back surge. Its fail-safe operation sustains the load in the event of an interrupted power supply. A special hand release
mechanisms is fitted to enable the hook to be lowered in the event of a power failure.
Hook Block
This contains a forged steel hook to BS 2903 or DIN Standards, tested to 150% full load before assembly and complete
with safety catch. The hook is stamped in 080A27, 150M19 or 150M28 material to BS970. The hook is carried on a
heavy duty thrust bearing which is fixed to the main trunion and enables 360 degree rotation of the hook.
The mild steel rope sheaves revolve on anti-friction bearings and are fully guarded within their protective steel casings.
Hoist Motor
The motor is a crane duty parallel rotor fan cooled squirrel cage machine. Single speed options are 4 pole machines
rated at 40% ED and 240 starts/hour. Dual speed options have either 16 or 32 pole secondary windings rated at 20%
ED Insulation is Class F to IEC Standards and protection is ISO IP54. The unit is flange mounted to the main hoist frame
side plate and connected to the gearbox through a flexible coupling. Thermostat motor protection is fitted as standard.
When creep speeds are required the dual speed operation is achieved by a dual wound motor, operated from double
depression control buttons.
Limit Switch
An auto-reset safety limit switch to prevent accidental over-hoisting or over-lowering of the hook block is fitted as
standard. This is a positive action switch, operated by movement of the hoist rope band. Both top and bottom trip
positions are adjustable to allow correct setting for individual crane installations.

ELECTRICAL ASSEMBLEY
All motions are controlled by hold-on pushbuttons; each motion is electrically interlocked, operating in conjunction with
mechanically interlocked reversing contactors.
50 volt low voltage control at the pushbuttons is provided as standard for additional safety.
The pushbuttons are arranged in a compact pendant station conforming to IEC 144 Class IP65. The enclosure is of oil-
tight low density polythene, resistant to shock and corrosion, and gives complete protection from harmful dust deposits,
foreign bodies and splashes from all directions. Indication arrows to international standards match similar markings on
the crane bridge structure.
The pushbutton unit is suspended by steel strainer wires from trolleys carried in a steel track fitted across the full span of
the crane bridge, providing a mobile control feature from any position across the span of the crane. A plug and socket
connection is provided for the pendant cable.
Control Gear
Contactors conform to EN 60947. 1-4 Category AC3/4, with a duty rating of 240 operations per hour. Each pair of triple
pole reversing contactors is mechanically interlocked for operator operation, minimising the potential for short circuiting
due to vibration.
The hoist and traverse contactors are housed in a sheet steel enclosure and each control circuit is protected by HRC
fuses in each phase. The main control panel encloses the 50 volt control transformer, main travel mechanically
interlocked reversing contactors and the mains contactor to isolate control via the stop and reset buttons in the
pushbutton station. Full protection to the motor circuits by HRC fuses is standard. For protection of maintenance and
inspection personnel, the crane panel has an interlocked master switch to prevent opening unless mains supply to the
crane is isolated.
Cross Conductors
Power is fed to the hoist unit through looped flat form, close flexible cables, suspended from trolleys, carried in a steel
track across the span of the crane. All cables are ISO Grade PVC sheathed, PVC insulated.
MOTORS
All motors are crane rated, solid rotor machines with parallel stator winding and Class F insulated. Electro-mechanical
brakes are fitted to each motion.
OPERATING TEMPERATURES
All motors, control gear and cables are rated for their duty requirements at ambient temperatures of up to 50 oC.
PAINTING
All cranes are ready painted before they are despatched from the manufacturing facility:
The paint system used is a high quality, Cranes for indoor use are painted to a minimum 120m dry film thickness.
Export cranes are painted to a minimum 150m dry film thickness. Finished colour is RAL 5007 for the hoist
RAL 1003 for the girder and the end carriages.
Hoist Unit - Each unit is finished in blue colour. Painted parts are washed, degreased, phosphate treated and a good
commercial paint finish applied.
TESTING
Our policy is that cranes will be tested to 125% of the normal safe working load in accordance with British Standards.
The lifting unit of a standard crane is always fully proof-load tested at the CMAK works.
A certificate of test will be issued. One Operating and Maintenance Manual, with wiring diagram, is issued with each
crane.
Guarantees: CMAK guarantees the equipment for 2 years from the date of testing excluding misuse
