Good afternoon, everyone.

Today, I would like to give a presentation on a topic that we have all

heard of: climate change. Climate change is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that has
far-reaching impacts on our planet. In the following two pages, I will discuss what climate
change is, the causes of climate change, the effects of climate change, and the steps that we can
take individually or collectively to address this pressing problem.

Climate change is defined as a long-term change in the average weather patterns that have come
to define Earth's local, regional and global climates. It is the result of the many natural and
human factors that have altered the Earth's energy balance, leading to an increase in global
temperatures. These factors can be traced back to several causes, the most significant of which is
the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases, such as carbon
dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide act like a blanket, trapping heat that would otherwise escape
into space. When the concentration of these gases increases, they trap more heat and the planet's
temperature increases.

The burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas releases enormous amounts of carbon into
the atmosphere, accounting for approximately 75% of the increase in greenhouse gas
concentrations over the past two centuries. Another important driver of climate change is
deforestation, which contributes to about 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Deforestation
also reduces the amount of carbon that trees absorb and store, exacerbating the effects of climate
change. Industrial processes, agriculture, and transportation are also significant contributors to
greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate change has far-reaching effects on both the environment and human society, affecting
everything from sea levels to weather patterns and food production. One of the most visible signs
of climate change is the rise in global temperatures. The 20 warmest years on record have all
occurred since 1981, with the years 2016, 2019, and 2020 being among the hottest temperatures
recorded. As the planet continues to warm, we are witnessing an increase in the frequency and
intensity of extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, and hurricanes.

Rising temperatures also contribute to the melting of ice caps, which in turn leads to rising sea
levels. Global sea levels have already risen by approximately 8 inches since 1880 and are
expected to continue rising. As sea levels rise, many coastal communities are facing increased
flooding and erosion, leading to the destruction of homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
Finally, higher temperatures also have major impacts on food production and security. Climate
change is causing more frequent and severe droughts and heatwaves, reducing crop yields and
leading to food insecurity. Extreme weather events such as floods and hurricanes have also
caused significant damage to agricultural land and infrastructure, affecting food production and
making it increasingly difficult for communities to access healthy, affordable, and sustainable
food.

As individuals or as a society, we can take steps to address climate change. Some of the actions
we can take include reducing our carbon footprint by driving less, eating less meat and dairy, and
using energy-efficient appliances. We can also support renewable energy by investing in clean
power, using public transportation, and investing in sustainable agriculture.

In conclusion, climate change is a global phenomenon that is causing serious and far-reaching
impacts on our planet. Despite the challenges that it poses, we have the knowledge and the
resources to take action and mitigate the effects of climate change. By taking steps to reduce our
carbon footprint and investing in sustainable practices, we can create a healthier, more
sustainable, and more resilient future for ourselves and for the generations to come.
