Strength of Materials for Mechanical engineers

UNIT I
1. A concrete column of cross-sectional area 400 mm x 400 mm is reinforced by four longitudinal 50
mm diameter round steel bars placed at each corner. If the column carries a compressive load of 300
kN, determine: (i) Loads carried (ii) The compressive stress produced in the concrete and steel bars.
Young’s modulus of steel is 15 times of concrete.
2. The following observations were made during a tensile test on a mild steel specimen 40 mm in
diameter and 200 mm long. Elongation with 40 kN: l=0.0304 mm; Yield load=161 kN; Maximum
load= 242 kN; Length of the specimen at fracture=249 mm. Determine: (i) Young modulus, (ii)Yield
point stress, (iii)Ultimate stress and (iv)Percentage of elongation.
A member ABCD is subjected to loads as shown in fig. below. Find the value of P and determine the
total change in length of the bar. Take E = 210 kN/mm2.

A compound tube consists of a steel tube 140 mm internal diameter and 160 mm external diameter
and an outer brass tube 160 mm internal diameter and 180 mm external diameter. The two tubes are of
the same length. The compound tube carries an axial load of 900 kN. Find the stresses and the load
carried by each tube and the amount it shortens. Length of each tube is 140 mm, Take
Es=2x105N/mm2 and Eb=1x105N/mm2.

UNIT II
A cantilever of length 2m carries a uniformly distributed load of 2kN/m length over the whole length
and a point load of 3kN at the free end. Draw SF and BM for the beam.
A cantilever beam 1.5 m long is loaded with a uniformly distributed load of 2kN/m run over a length
of 1.25 m from the free end. It also carries a point load of 3 kN at a distance of 0.25 m from the free
end. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram.
An overhanging beam of length 13m is simply supported over A and B of length 8m. The portion A
overhangs by 3m from left end & the portion B overhangs by 2m from the right end. It is subjected to
a point load of 2000N at 8m from the left end. It is also subjected to 800N at extreme left end &
1000N at extreme right end. Draw the SFD and BMD and mark the point of contraflexure.
A simply supported beam of span 10m carries a concentrated load of 10kN at 2m from the left support
and a uniformly distributed load of 4 kN/m over the entire length. Sketch the shear force and bending
moment diagrams for the beam

UNIT III
A closely coiled helical spring made out of a 10 mm diameter steel bar has 12 complete coils, each of
mean diameter of 100 mm. Calculate the stress induced in the section of the rod, the deflection under
the pull and the amount of energy stored in the spring during the extension if it is subjected to an axial
pull of 200 N. Modulus of rigidity is 0.84x105 N/mm2.
A closely coiled helical spring made of 10 mm diameter steel wire has 15 coils of 100 mm mean
diameter. The spring is subjected to an axial load of 100 N. Calculate the maximum shear stress,
deflection, stiffness of the spring.
A weight of 160 N is dropped on to a close coiled helical spring made of 13 mm wire closely coiled to
a mean diameter of 60 mm with 22 turns of coils. Determine the height of drop if the instantaneous
compression is 90 mm.

A closed coil helical spring of 8mm diameter wire with 12 coils of mean diameter 100 mm carries an
axial load of 400 N. Find the shear stress induced and deflection caused. What is the strain energy
stored? Take C = 8x106 N/cm2.

UNIT IV

A simply supported beam of span 20 m carries two point loads 2kN at 8m and 5kN at 12m from the
Left end. By using Macaulay’s method determine (a) deflection under each load and (b) the maximum
deflection. Take EI = 2 x 105 kNm2.
Derive the equation for slope and deflection of simply supported beam, AB of length L and carrying a
point load of W at a distance at “a” from support A and at distance “b” from support B using
Macaulay’s method.
A beam of length 6 m is simply supported at its ends and carries two point loads of 48 kN & 40 kN at
a distance of 1 m and 3 m respectively from the left support. Using macaulay’s method find:
(i)Deflection under each load
(ii)Maximum Deflection
(iii)The Point at which maximum deflection occurs. Take E = 2 x 105 N/mm2 & I = 85 x 106 mm4.
Derive the equation for slope and deflection of simply supported beam of length L carrying
point load W at the center by using double integration method.

UNIT V
A cylindrical shell of 1m long, 150 mm internal diameter having thickness of metal as 7 mm is filled
with fluid at atmosphere pressure. If an additional 25 cc of fluid is pumped into the cylinder, find the
pressure exerted by the fluid on the cylindrical shell and the resulting hoop stress. Assume E = 2 × 10 5
N/mm2 and poisson’s ratio = 0.27.
A closed cylindrical drum 600 mm in diameter and 2 m long has a shell thickness of 12 mm. if its
carries a fluid under a pressure of 3 N/mm2, calculate the longitudinal and hoop stress in the drum wall
and also determine the change in diameter, change in length and change in volume of the drum. Take
E = 200 GPa and poisson’s ratio = 0.3
Calculate (i) Change in diameter (ii)Change in length and (iii) Change in volume of thin cylindrical
shell of 100 cm diameter 1cm thick and 5m long when subjected to internal pressure of 3N/mm 2. Take
value E=2×105 N/mm2 and poison ratio=0.3.
Calculate (i) Change in diameter (ii)Change in length and (iii) Change in volume of thin cylindrical
shell of 80cm diameter 1cm thick and 3m long when subjected to internal pressure of 2.5N/mm2. Take
value E=2×105 N/mm2 and poison ratio = 0.25.
PART C

Derive the equation for theory of simple bending.


Derive the generalized torsion equation.
The Stress at a point in a bar is 200 N/mm2 & -100 N/mm2. Determine the resultant stress in
magnitude & direction on a plane inclined at 60° to the axis of the major stress. Also
determine the maximum intensity of shear stress in the material at the point using Mohr’s
circle method.
