Introduction
HYDRAPOL® BD50 woolscouring detergent is a specialised
biodegradable scouring detergent developed by Huntsman
Performance Products in their Australian Research Laboratories.
This product enhances contaminant removal in woolscouring at
typical scour temperatures of 60 – 65oC. It may be used in either
the suint bowl as a wetting aid or the scouring bowls as the primary
detergent. At 20oC the product is a non-viscous liquid that is readily
soluble in water.
Application
Temperature
Detergent Bowls
The optimal temperature range of the detergent bowls in a
woolscouring line should be maintained between 60-65oC for
maximum scouring efficiency. The detergency properties of
HYDRAPOL® BD50 woolscouring detergent are most active within
this temperature range, and the viscosity of the wool grease is also
sufficiently low for efficient removal and solubilisation. Too high a
temperature results in wool damage and increased energy usage
whereas too low a temperature results in poor scouring efficiency
and reduced squeezing efficiency.
Other Bowls
The suint and rinse bowls in a common woolscouring line are
typically maintained within a temperature range of 15-40oC and 40-
50oC respectively. A suint bowl at 35oC has been shown to be more
effective than colder temperatures in removing dirt and water-
soluble contaminants particularly with a small addition of
HYDRAPOL® BD50 woolscouring detergent. If adding HYDRAPOL®
BD50 woolscouring detergent to the suint bowl as a wetting agent,
typical use level is 0.1 – 0.3% on greasy wool mass for all wool
types. Warm rinse bowls (40-50oC) are also more effective than cold
rinse bowls. The removal of entrained liquors and soluble salts is
more efficient and the squeezing efficiency is greater reducing the
energy requirement in drying.

The figures quoted in the table are not exact but do give an accurate
guide for initial dose rate, which can then be optimised for
individual mills. Other factors such as the detergent dose pattern
are also important.

Alkaline Scouring
Alkaline builders such as Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) and Caustic
Soda (Sodium hydroxide) can also be used to increase the rate of
grease and dirt removal. This effect arises by saponification of wool
grease to form the corresponding fatty acid soaps and enhanced
dirt removal may be obtained by an electrical barrier mechanism
causing mutual repulsion of the wool fibre and contaminants.
Careful pH control (<9.5) is necessary in alkaline scouring to
prevent yellowing and damage of the wool on drying.
Biodegradability
HYDRAPOL® BD50 woolscouring detergent meets the requirements
for ready biodegradability under Australian Standard
AS 4351.3 - 1996.
Note:
The Australian Standard AS 4351.1 - 1996, “Biodegradability -
Organic Compounds in an Aqueous Medium”, prescribes the
International Standard test protocol ISO 9408:1995, under AS
4351.3 - 1996 “Determination by Oxygen Demand in a Closed
Respirometer”.
