Plastic beach
Last summer I visited my friend Pier in Italy. He had invited his cousins Claudio and Marta to stay too,
so the four of us had a great time. His village is in the mountains but not too far from the sea. We
enjoyed exploring the countryside and visiting a castle beside a lake where his mum used to work.
One morning, we decided to take the train from Pier’s village to the sea. We packed some lunch and
left the house early, but by the time we got to the station the train had already left. Pier said we could

also take a bus but in the end we decided to walk as it was warm. There were lots of cyclists on the
path to the beach, so we had to be careful.
By the time we got to the beach, it had become very hot and we were all thirsty. Marta shared some
water with us all and we immediately felt better. There weren’t many people there – Pier told us that
the sea was not safe to swim in, so people didn’t use to go there much. But the sand was beautiful
and we found a nice comfortable area near some large rocks to relax and have our lunch.
When we had finished eating, we went for a walk along the beach. Claudio pointed at something in
the water. ‘That’s a water bottle’, said Pier. ‘Look – there is plastic everywhere on the beach. What a
mess!’ Then Marta said, ‘Let’s pick up the plastic. We need to protect the wildlife.’ We all agreed and
soon we had collected a lot of plastic bottles and other waste. ‘Some people have no respect’, I said.
When we got home that evening, Pier started looking for environmental organisations to help reduce
plastic waste. ‘There’s one that’s based in a town not far from here’, he said. ‘Maybe we can go
tomorrow?’ Claudio agreed. ‘Great idea. We can ask them to organise an event to remove rubbish
from the beach. We made some progress today but we need more people!’
