Running Crew
Director
Jason Augustowski is the English Department
Chair for Riverside High School and the Director
of RiverHawk Productions in addition to Infinite
Arts. He wishes to welcome you to an absolutely
spectacular country club summer desert par-
ty. What's a desert party, you ask?
You're about to see one. So feel free to boogie along from your seat - but
like the Alamo Draft House teaches us, once the show starts, this auditori-
um is a quiet zone: no talking and keep devices dark, silent and out of si-
lent. It's appreciated by your neighbors (and keeps us undistracted at the
board as we run your sound/lights/music).
Now that that's out of the way, let's randomly talk about argument
styles. Indulge me. There are many different forms and structures in
which one can properly argue, but two intrinsically common to us are the
Rogerian and Toulmin methods. And although we may not have previously
known their names and formal structures, we tend to default to one or the
other. Rogerian (named after psychiatrist, Carl Rogers) is an argument that
seeks common ground, compromise, a "coming to the table to negotiate
and shake hands." In this style we begin by "setting the scene." We ex-
plain the background and context of our topic so our opponent finds them-
selves on even footing with us. Then we give their side of the argument
props. Think of any polarizing topic you can. What is your posi-
tion? Good, save it. Start by demonstrating respect for the opposite side
and explaining how you understand the logic, emotion and credibility their
side holds. Once you have (thoroughly and genuinely)... make your own
point. Which, since you believe it, you will naturally make it better, more
compelling, more passionately. Then conclude with explaining how you
are really trying to help your opponent. They will actually be better off by
believing the way you believe. Re-envelope these benefits in real world
context. I'm sure you can imagine situations where this style would bene-
fit a discourse (for both sides).

The other way, Toulmin, is much more aggressive. You have a "hot take"
that you know people will find offensive/insane/incorrect and you need to
steamroll them or they won't listen. Well, tell us that fiery claim and set
the context and evidence immediately. Don't just shout nonsense into the
ethers - they need to hear the proof and they need it now. Suffocate me
with it before I have a chance to butt in or shrug you off. Then warrant
that evidence. Tie it back painstakingly to your thesis. I mean every detail
of the proof, tie a little string to it and connect to your central claim. If
they can punch holes in your logic, emotion or credibility they will COME
for you. And once you have steamrolled them, with a casual shrug con-
clude with admitting there's a slight limitation to your claim and that you
already know what their rebuttal will be. Explain what you assume they
will retaliate with and debunk it (stealing their power) before they even
have the chance to open their mouth. Then drop the mic and walk
away. Again, there are times this intense style is necessary too.
If you came to see Next 2 Normal (and read my bio) I had a whole lesson
on door, window and mirror texts. Where N2N was a window into the way
people with bipolar disorder live, High School Musical is a door to a desert
party. So feel it. Feel everything. Feel it deeper than "oh look that's my
friend (or my little snookums) on the stage!" Suspend disbelief and im-
merse yourself. And as these teens and tweens interact and imitate (in a
Disney fashion) some of the real stresses they encounter when they're out
of our sight and in the battlefield of childhood and teendom, analyze. Look
for the moments that are Rogerian. And look for the moments that are
Toulmin. Were they used in the correct contexts? What were the conse-
quences? And see a little bit of what I see every day. And enjoy the spec-
tacular sets and singing and dances and costumes and acting and
props. But do me a favor and open yourself and learn something too. And
remember, shh the phones & mouths.
Love, Jason
P.S. If you're here for Fri or Sat night, my parents are here so go say
"hi" (they're in Row G by the boards). If you don't know what they look
like, they are on the cast board and in enormous posters on the set. I
made them take those. Heehee. My mom is the one who looks like she
could be my younger sister and my dad is the hunkier version of yours tru-
ly. They did not bring their wine or cigars. We are, after all, in a school.

Vocal Director
Kerr holds a B.S. in Elementary Education
from Mount. St. Mary's University and is cur-
rently the Digital Experience Specialist at
Sanders Corner Elementary School. This is
the 12th year she has been directing with Ja-
son. Jill has been honored three times by National Youth Arts for vocal
direction and shares these honors and the success of every show with
the exceptionally talented students she’s been fortunate enough to
work with throughout the years.
Jill and Jason began Infinite Arts to give the students of Loudoun
County opportunities to perform that are unparalleled in our area.
Infinite Arts prides itself on giving students a space to tackle shows that
challenge them both on stage and off, We believe in giving students of
any age, level and experience, theatre instruction that makes them
confident performers in an environment that fosters friendships that
last. Infinite Arts started as a summer stage program and has grown
and expanded to produce virtually year round shows that offer some-
thing for every student. We understand that all our students have var-
ied interests and provide leadership opportunities behind the scenes of
each show as well. I encourage you to get involved! Follow us on social
media, visit our website, email us and ask us questions after the show!
We will be thrilled to meet you and show you how you can become part
of the Infinite Arts family!
Please enjoy High School Musical 2. Each show I have directed, I have
had the joy of watching the students make the show grow and trans-
cend all expectations. High School Musical 2 is no exception. They have
raised the bar yet again and have so much to celebrate with their amaz-
ing production!
