Electric lights are very important in our daily lives. If we have them in our
homes, we can see at night. We don’t need candles or oil lamps. We can also use
modern devices such as refrigerators, televisions, computers, and other electric
things. Those things make our lives easier and more convenient. For example,
microwaves and dishwashers help us do chores like cooking meals and washing
dishes.
Electricity is very helpful, but they may not be available everywhere. In the
whole world, about 1.4 billion people don’t have electric lights. Their life is much

A stilt house is a type of home on “legs”. Families often keep their crops and
animals under the house and live upstairs. They live UNIT 3 – Reading – Advanced
on a higher level so when it rains, the water cannot reach the rooms. Also, the
family is safe at night because snakes and spiders can’t get into the house. They can’t
climb the stilts. Another good thing about this house is that it is cooler upstairs. These
types of houses are high, safe, and dry.
Right now, we can find stilts houses on many continents such as Asia, Africa,
Europe, and South America. But these houses are quite different. For example, in
some Vietnamese stilt houses, the right side is for men and the left one is for women.
There are often two staircases in these houses. But in Thailand, the stilt houses are
normally on water and they have view to the mountains. The doors of Thai houses
are bigger than Vietnamese ones.
Modern stilt houses may look the same as in the past, but inside they are totally
different. In most modern stilt houses, there are electric lights. The houses also have
refrigerators, television sets, and even some computers. Of course, most people who
live in these houses also own cell phones.

Most children nowadays can study with friends in nice, big schools. But when I was
a little kid, there was only one school in my town for everyone.
The school was very small. It had only 3 classrooms for everyone in town. Because of
