A. High levels of blood sugar are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
A blood sugar level above normal referred to as “impaired fasting glucose.” It was
found in study that a sample of 155 people with impaired fasting glucose, 47 had
type 2 diabetes. Can you conclude that less than 35% of people with impaired
fasting glucose have type 2 diabetes? Use α = 0.05 level of significance.
Given: µ = 47 α = .05
n = 155
Ho - µ ≥ 35
Ha - µ < 35
B. The average one-year-old (both sexes) is 29 inches tall. A random sample of 30 one-
year-olds in a large day care franchise resulted in the following heights. At α = 0.05,
can it be concluded that the average height differs from 29 inches? Assume σ = 2.61.
25 32 32 26.5 27 32
30 35 28 31.5 25.5 34
29 30 30 28 29.5 29.5
32 27 28 26 32 30
28.5 25 33 29 29.5 29
Given: µ = 29
α = .05
n = 30
σ = 2.61

For a two-tailed test at α=0.05, the critical z-value is approximately ± 1.96 .
You ou fail to reject the null hypothesis. There is not enough evidence to conclude
that the average height differs from 29 inches at the 0.05 level of significance.
C. The average expenditure per student, based on daily average attendance, for a
certain school year was Php 496,176.00, with a population standard deviation of
Php 74,880.00. A survey for the next school year of 150 randomly selected students
resulted in a sample average expenditure of Php 518,304.00. Do these results
indicate that the average expenditure has increased? Choose your own level of
significance.
Given: µ = 496176
α = .05
n = 150
σ = 74880
x=518304
Ho - µ = x
Ha - µ > x
For a one-tailed test at α=0.05 with 149 degrees of freedom, the critical t-value
is approximately 1.655. Since the calculated t-value (3.62) is greater than the critical t-
value (1.655), you can reject the null hypothesis.. At the 0.05 level of significance,
there is enough evidence to conclude that the average expenditure per student has
increased in the next school year compared to the previous year.
D. The average local cell phone call length was reported to be 2.27 minutes. A
random sample of 20 phone calls showed an average of 2.98 minutes in length
with a standard deviation of 0.98 minute. At α = 0.05 can it be concluded that the
average differs from the population average?
2
Given: µ = 2.27
α = .05
n = 20
σ = . 98
x=2.98
Ho - µ = 2.27
Ha - µ ≠ 2.27

x= = 14347.17

σ = 2048.54
Ho - µ = 15000
Ha - µ ≠ 15000
For a two-tailed test at α=0.01 with 11 degrees of freedom, the critical t-value is
approximately ± 3.106. Since the absolute value of the calculated t-value (1.097)
is less than the critical t-value (3.106), you fail to reject the null hypothesis. At
the 0.01 level of significance, there is not enough evidence to conclude that the
average stipend differs from Php 15,000.
