SAFETY IN ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE
DO’s Ensure that all electrical equipment on which the men work are properly grounded and disconnected from the source of point. Always ‘TEST BEFORE TOUCHING ANY ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT’. Stay away from push buttons. Do not stop or start motors incidentally Ensure no temporary connection is provided in classified area Strictly follow the electrical permit system for any major electrical maintenance job. Always use safety rubber hand gloves and rubber mats. Before racking out any breaker (HT or LT) make sure that the breaker which is going to rack out must be in OFF position. Observe the following rules when installing or maintaining explosion proof equipment: ▪ Flange surface must be clean and undamaged. ▪ Threads must be clean and undamaged. ▪ While replacing covers tighten bolt properly or engage all threads on threaded covers. If the above three conditions cannot be met, replace the damaged equipment and do not take Chance. Attach welding machine ground return cable to the object on which welding is being done. While racking out a breaker from service position to test position do not give jerks, use uniform and even pulling force. Always insist on written line clearance before energizing isolated equipment (WORK PERMIT SYSTEM TO BE ADOPTED AND FOLLOWED). Before pushing a breaker (HT or LT) from test position to service position, make sure that the spring is in Discharge condition. Put a caution board ‘DO NOT SWITCH ON – MEN AT WORK’ on the breaker/ MCC when men are at work with some equipment. Also switch off the control power supply of the breaker. Before isolating any feeder or equipment, read the panel number and tag number written on the panel and ensure that you are touching the correct feeder or correct switch. Read out the tag numbers a bit loudly to avoid unintentional error. Give immediate and appropriate first aid including mouth to mouth resuscitation for any shock victim. DON’Ts While racking out a breaker from service position to test position do not give jerks, use uniform and even pulling force. Unauthorized persons are not allowed to enter MCC (Motor Control Room) or fenced enclosures around electrical equipment. Never operate the push on the switch on which “DO NOT SWITCH ON-MEN AT WORK” board is kept. While pulling out or inserting HRC fuse, make use of insulated fuse puller. Do not try to insert or pull out HRC fuse with the help of insulated pliers Do not try to put your fingers, screw drivers or any other tools inside the HT and MCCB breakers when its spring is in CHARGED condition. Do not stop and start motors frequently. This will damage both the starter and the motor or shorten the life of equipment. Avoid de- energisation or isolation of any motor / equipment on telephone requests Never give any liquid to an unconscious person.
