b. Show the laminar and turbulent boundary flow regimes over a flat plate.
c. Define Nusselt number & Prandtl number
d. What do you mean by thermal boundary layer? How is this different from
hydrodynamic boundary layer?
e. Define Reynold analogy.

(a) The steel ball bearings of 40 mm diameter and initially at uniform temperature
9-
heat transfer coefficient between the ball bearings and oil is 325 W/m2K and
the thermodynamic properties of bearings can be taken as K = 45 W/mk,
α=1.25x10-5 m2/s. Determine:
(i) Time duration for which bearings must remain in oil to attain 225oC temp.
(ii) Amount of heat removed from bearings during this time.
(iii) The instantaneous heat transfer rate from the bearings when they are first
immersed on oil and when they reach 225oC.
(b) A steel ball 5 cm in diameter is heated to a temperature of 900 oC and placed
in still surrounding atmosphere for cooling. If the atmospheric temperature is
30 oC, calculate the initial cooling rate of the ball in oC/min. For steel take
ρ=7800kg/m3, Cp=2 kJ/kg oC. Assume heat transfer coefficient=30W/m2 oC.
