TITLE: (KANSAS CITY CHIEFS OR DENVER BRONCOS)

ISSUE: Comparing the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos

My position: The Kansas City Chiefs are the better option.

Specific purpose: My audience will see that the Chiefs are a better franchise for several reasons.

Central idea: The Chiefs are the superior organization due to their place in the annals of NFL

history, their competitive history versus the Broncos, and their place among the least cheating

teams in the league.

Organization: Comparative Advantage

Introduction

I. Attention Getter: Video of Cairos Santos’ overtime field goal.

II. Introduction of topic: To contrast the Broncos, the Chiefs are not only a storied

franchise but one that has achieved a fair amount of success without all of the

dishonesty and mischief that the Broncos have employed.

III. Relation to audience: You all go to school near Kansas City, yet I fear that many of

you have not been following one of the city’s major stories: Chiefs football.
IV. Ethos: I have been a rabid Chiefs fan for over a decade, watching over 100 games

with my dad over that time.

V. Preview: There are many reasons the Broncos are an inferior organization, but they

really boil down to several main points.

a. Lamar Hunt and his Chiefs play an important role in NFL history

b. Head to head, the Chiefs simply have the Broncos’ number.

c. The Chiefs have managed to remain relevant without the countless cheats the

Broncos have employed.

(transition: I know, choosing an NFL team is an important decision in everyone’s life, so let us

begin by discussing the history of the National Football League and the Chiefs’ place in it)

Body

I. The Chiefs are a historic NFL team and played a major rule in the AFL-NFL merger.

a. Chiefs’ owner Lamar Hunt coined the term, “Super Bowl”

b. The Chiefs played in Super Bowl I and then again in Super Bowl IV

(transition: But what does history matter when we’re talking about now? Through their past,

which of these two squads has shown to be dominant over the other?)

II. The Chiefs have an overall record of 58-55-0 against the Broncos. (Including the

exciting primetime win on Sunday night)

a. The Chiefs also have a winning record against every current AFC West team (61-

51-2 vs Oakland, 57-55-1 vs San Diego)

b. Though Denver has 3 Lombardi trophies to Kansas City’s 1, this only suggests

they are more competitive against other NFL teams than the Chiefs are, and the

Chiefs retain the competitive advantage there

(transition: So now we know that the Chiefs have both a historical and competitive edge over the

Broncos. So what? It’s not like either team has the moral high ground, right?)

III. The Denver Broncos

a. The Broncos have been caught cheating more than any other NFL team- and it

isn’t particularly close.

i. Yourteamcheats.com gives Denver a cheat score of 53, 7 points higher

than the second place New York Jets

ii. The Chiefs are among the least cheat-prone teams in the league.

b. Denver has a culture of egos and intra-team violence in their locker room.

i. During that aforementioned SNF matchup, CB Aqib Talib was seen

shoving teammate Jordan Norwood after a muffed punt

(So now that you have seen that the Chiefs are not only better than the Broncos, but have

achieved that honor without resorting to cheating, the choice is simple.)

Conclusion

I. Summary:

a. The Chiefs played a vital role in making the NFL the league it is today

b. The Chiefs have historically beaten the Broncos more times than the Broncos

have beaten them

c. The Chiefs are tied for the lowest cheater score in the league, while the Broncos

are safely in sole position of the highest cheater score in the league

II. Round-Off/Appeal for agreement: While history is kind of nice, it is not not the end-

all-be-all. Competitiveness is really the most important factor even if dishonesty and

sabotage are required to get there. In this case, despite the best attempts of the

Broncos to cheat their way to victory, the Chiefs have remained triumphant. The

decision is clear.
