Section A (30 Marks)

Answer both questions
1. POETRY
Poverty and Africa
Poverty is black hole
Centred in the middle of Africa
Spinning out of control
Ravaging the highlands of Ethiopia
And the great rift valleys of East Africa
Exposing a land full of corruption
And a bunch of misfits in high places
Ruling over kingdoms full of hungry faces

Poverty roams the African plains

From the dunes of Kalahari Desert
To the grasslands of the Masai Mara
Soaring far above the African sky
In daylight show of denomination
A brutal dictatorship reigns in Africa

Poverty is a monster from hell

Dressed in a coat of fury and a pair of sunglasses
Red eyes and steam oozing nostrils
It has an appetite for young African children
Tender and juicy little souls

Gorged at breakfast, lunch and dinner

Baked into small little pancakes
Roasted on hot charcoal fire
And sliced into pieces of Apple pie

2. SHORT STORY
Read this passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
ON THAT SUNDAY MORNING

“The world is round indeed,” Chagwam’mbale whispered under his breath.

He focused his gaze intently on the lady as she gracefully walked along the
aisle to the front where pastor Wangwiro stood. Chagwam’mbale was
attending a church service that Sunday morning at Salima Boma where he had
gone for work, before returning to Kasungu where he was based. Despite the
time of the day, the sun had already become oppressive.
The pastor had delivered a moving sermon and at the end of it all, had invited
all who lacked a marriage partner to step forward so that they could be prayed
for.
“I want to pray for those who are looking for Mister or Miss Right. Anyone
who feels their life is lacking should come forward,” the pastor had said.
The congregation went dead silent before the sleek lady, in a navy blue suit,
stood up and walked majestically to the front.
As she walked, Chagwam’mbale’s heart skipped a beat. He could hardly
believe his eyes as his mind recalled the image of the young lady in the library
of his dusted memory. Floods of memories gushed out like a stampede and
pricked his mind as he watched her. His mind drifted back to January 2, 2008.
Memories of excruciating day in his life resurrected to torment him afresh.
She had now grown into a complete young lady. Her sleek appearance was

evidence enough that the beauty she had 10 years ago had not withered. In
fact, she looked prettier than a decade ago.
She was a girl who had come to his rescue when the police pounced on him
for allegedly stealing a purse from the lady on the bus he was on. It had been
a trying period for Chagwam’mbale who was returning from the burial of his
uncle.
He had been surprised when the two law enforcers headed towards his seat
after the bus had stopped at Liwonde road block.
“Young man you are under arrest for alleged theft,” one police man growled.
“Theft, what theft sir? I do…. don’t know anything,” Chagwam’mbale had
stammered.
He was sharply cut off by the other officer who was a mountain of a man.
“You have the right to remain silent,” the obese police man said hoarsely, as
he handcuffed Chagwam’mbale, “we will take you into custody while we
investigate the case”.
As the officers pushed him out of the bus, tears rolled down his face. His mind
was blank at this juncture. His mind was tormented by the images of blood
stained police cells, all for a crime he had not committed.
One other matter that kept tugging at his mind was the end of semester
examinations which were starting in two days. He bent his face and offered a
succinct prayer. “God, your will be done, you know Lord that……"
At that point, his train of thoughts had been interrupted by the soft voice of a
girl. It was funny because it mitigated the pain that was running down his
spine.
“How much was in the purse?” asked the female voice coming from the back
seat.
It was a girl Chagwam’mbale had not seen in his life before. He locked eyes
with her and buried his pale face in the ambience of disbelief. “k50,
000!” exclaimed a lady whose purse had been stolen.
“Wait I will replace the stolen money, just release him” the girl said dipped
into her brown handbag and handed the money to the lady.

“Thank you for coming to my rescue, but I didn’t steal the money,”
Chagwam’mbale said as he walked back to his seat, attempting to purge his
frozen emotions.
“It’s okay, don’t worry, God knows the truth,” the girl replied.
He had planned to thank her once again when they got off the bus, but it was
to be the last time Chagwam’mbale spoke with her. At Zomba bus depot, there
was so much chaos in the bus as people alighted. He watched her leave
helplessly and his eyes escorted her through the gates of the depot.
Now after ages, he had met the Good Samaritan again, but this time in the
house of God.
“If there is anyone else who wants god to shove aside the spirit of
disappointment today, please come forward before I pray,” said Wangwiro in
a loud voice.
The sinews in Chagwam’mbale’s joints felt frazzled as if he was seeing a
wraith. His heart waved with hopes, the Good Samaritan in front was the
reason. He was not going in front because he was looking for Miss Right to
lead to the altar; he had seen Miss Right.
All eyes of the congregation were glued on Chagwam’mbale as he shuffled
his way to the dais where Wangwiro stood waiting for him to join the lady on
the line of prayer.
