GED_103_AM13 Readings in Philippine History Reflection Paper
For an activity called "Museum Visitation," I chose to visit Destileria Limtuaco
Museum in Intramuros, Manila. This distillery is one of the oldest in the Philippines and has been operating continuously. Intramuros is a historical walled city built during the Spanish colonial era. I selected this distillery for several reasons. First, it's close to our university, Mapua. Second, it has significant historical importance as one of the oldest distilleries in the Philippines, known for its best-selling wines and liquors. Third, the company takes pride in having five generations of Master Blenders. Fourth, the Destileria Limtuaco Museum has architectural significance and character. This was my first visit to a distillery, despite not being a liquor drinker. Are you aware of the fascinating history behind White Castle's products? As a teenager, I've come to know some of their offerings, but it wasn't until recently that I discovered their intriguing backstory. Growing up, I remember seeing those bikini- clad models in White Castle's calendars, which served as a parental advisory for us. Now, those images of the red bikinis are on display in a museum, and it's evident that the White Castle Whiskey brand has made a significant impact on our culture. Among the famous models featured in White Castle's calendars were Ms. Evangeline Pascual, Ms. Cristina Gonzales, Ms. Glydel Mercado, Ms. Carmi Martin, Ms. Lorna Tolentino, Ms. Angela Velez, Ms. Roxanne Guinoo, Ms. RR Enriquez, and Ms. Meg Imperial, among others. Moreover, I recently read an article highlighting the first-ever member of the LGBTQIA+ community to be featured in the liquor brand's decade-long campaign: TikTok star Sassa Gurl. As the 2022 calendar girl for White Castle Whiskey, Sassa Gurl is making history and breaking barriers. It's fascinating to see how White Castle's products have evolved over time, and I can't wait to see what they have in store for the future.
Through my research on the Destileria Limtuaco Museum, I discovered
fascinating trivia and facts about the history of wine-making during the Spanish Colonial era. The museum was established in 1852 by Lim Tua Co, a Chinese merchant and martial arts master, who produced a diverse range of distilled spirits and alcoholic beverages, including whisky, rum, gin, vodka, brandy, flavored tequila, ready-to-mix cocktail drinks, medicinal tonic, and various liqueurs. Limtuaco started with a small distillery on Gandara Street in Binondo, Manila, where he sold Chinese herbal wine, which later became known as sioktong. The distillery became well- known for producing high-quality liquors, including White Castle whisky, Napoleon VSOP brandy, and Sioktong, which is now available under two different brands - Vino de Chino and Vino Kung Fu. Other popular brands include Palawan Rum, Manille Liqueur de Calamansi, and Imeldifique Cooking Wine. Destilleria Limtuaco Museum is recognized as a leader in the Philippine liquor industry and is a top exporter of Philippine liquors to many countries worldwide. I had a profound realization during my recent museum visitation activity. Being cooped up indoors due to my hectic student schedule for the past three years has limited my exposure to new experiences and learnings. Traveling alone enabled me to appreciate the beauty of historical and architectural landmarks, which I might have missed out on otherwise. Despite the initial daunting feeling of traveling alone, it turned out to be an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. I strongly recommend traveling alone to anyone who wants to venture on a journey of self-discovery and relaxation while discovering the hidden gems around us.
