William G. Morgan was born in 1870 in Lockport, New York, and he spent his
formative years attending public school and working at his father's boatyard on the
banks of the Old Erie Canal. In 1891, Morgan attended Mt. Hermon Preparatory School
in Northfield, Massachusetts, where he met James A. Naismith, the man credited with
inventing basketball. Morgan's athletic prowess impressed Naismith, who advised him to
continue his education at the International Young Men's Christian Association Training
School in Springfield, Massachusetts (now called Springfield College). During his time at
Springfield, Morgan was a member of the college's legendary football team, which
played championship football under the direction of one of the "Grand Old Men of
Football," Alonzo A. Stagg.
In 1894, Morgan became the physical director of the YMCA in Auburn, Maine.
The following year, he accepted a similar position in Holyoke, Massachusetts, the
birthplace of volleyball. In September or October 1895, when William Morgan arrived at
the Holyoke YMCA, the new physical director was faced with a difficult situation. Even
though basketball was popular among children, it was too time-consuming for the local
businesspeople. He looked for something different, something these elderly men could
play, something without excessive "bumping" or "jolting." It had to be active - playing a
game after work and during lunch had to provide exercise - but it also had to be
relaxing for the participants; it could not be too violent. Morgan stipulated that it must
be a non-contact sport with a strong athletic drive.
Consequently, he borrowed. The ball was stolen from basketball. The tennis
court's net. He adopted the use of his hands and the ability to play off the walls and
overhangs from handball. And he adopted the baseball concept of innings. He coined
the term "mintonette" to describe this new game in December 1895. It was effective
enough to garner attention at the YMCA Physical Director's Conference the following
year in Springfield, Massachusetts, despite being somewhat incomplete. During this
meeting, Springfield College professor Dr. Alfred Halstead suggested the current name.
Volleyball is an activity.
Concept of Volleyball
Volleyball is a team sport involving a net and a ball. On both sides of the net,
there are teams. When one team hits the ball over the net and into the other team's
court or area, the opposing team has three attempts to hit the ball back over the net
and into play without allowing the ball to touch the ground. Globally, there are two
styles of competitive volleyball played. Both indoor and beach volleyball exist. Both are
competitive Olympic sports with leagues. The volleyball court is 9 meters wide and 18
meters long. The center is divided into sides by the net. The net is 1 m wide and 7 feet
11 5/8 inches above the ground in height (8 feet approx.). A third distinguishing feature
is a line drawn 3 meters from and parallel to each side of the net. It is called the
offensive line. It divides the volleyball court's front and back rows.
Volleyball Rules
• Only six players are permitted on the volleyball court at any given time. Three in the
front row and three in the back.
• Points are awarded for each serve; this is known as rally-point scoring.
• Players are prohibited from hitting the ball twice in a row (a block is not considered a
hit).
• A ball that strikes the boundary line is considered "in."
• The ball is considered "out" if it touches the antenna, any cables or net outside the
antennae, the floor area completely outside the court, the pole or referee stand, or the
ceiling above a non-playable area.
In a volleyball game, it is legal for a player to touch the ball with any part of his or her
body.
• It is forbidden to throw, catch, or hold the ball.
• Attacking or blocking a serve from or within the 10-foot line is prohibited.
• The front-line players are permitted to switch positions at the net following the
service.
• The matches are made up of sets, the number depends on the level of the game.
