COMPANY BACKGROUND 3
ROLLER END DISCS: The roller end discs are fabricated from hot rolled steel strip to AS1594,
HA4NP then precision pressed in automatic presses. This ensures bearing bores are sized accurately
to house the bearing and also ensures the bearing housing is square to the roller center line. The roller
discs are 3mm continuous fillet welded to AS 1554 GP in a special double-ended welding machine, which
gives a minimum of 70% weld penetration and ensures that the shell tubing is concentric at the ends
during the welding process, thereby ensuring minimum run-out for the Tyton roller. Breather holes are
provided, unless noted otherwise, to prevent the roller breathing through the bearings & seals when
expansion and contraction occurs.
One shaft end is painted yellow on the breather hole end and is to be mounted in the down location on
the wing rollers.
ROLLER SHAFTS: All shafts are manufactured from low carbon-free cutting steel to ASNZS 1443
bright bar.
BEARING RETENTION: Bearings are secured in housings via an interference fit. They are
located on the shaft positively locked at one end via a circlip and shaft shoulder, while the other bearing
“floats”, thereby not allowing the shell to walk off the shaft.
IDLER ROLLER BEARINGS: Tyton rollers are fitted with single row deep groove ball bearings,
ZZ shielded type, with a C3 or C4 internal clearance. We have selected these bearings because they give
up to ten minutes angular deflection in their operation, coupled with even load distribution within each
bearing race.
Seals (Outer). The outer seal comprises a labyrinth seal combined with a contact vee rubber seal which
fills in the well area and incorporates an outer water/dust line contact seal. The seals are acceptable for
use in underground mines in Australia.
IDLER ROLLER LUBRICATION: Our standard range utilizes ZZ sealed bearings which are
factory filled with a lithium base grease, specially formulated to minimise roller drag and give maximum
resistance to water wash out. Operating temperatures -20°c to +130°c, drop point 184°c.
IDLER ROLLER SURFACE TREATMENT: End discs are chemically degreased prior to
welding to the tube, and solvent cleaned prior to being given one coat of VLI Green enamel paint. Shells
can be hot dipped galvanised and ends protected a with special corrosion protective system on request.
TECHNICAL DATA AND STANDARDS 5
COMPOSITE
ROLLER SHELLS: The shell is fabricated from ERW 200 - 350 Range to AS1450, conveyor tubing.
Each shell end is machined to ensure each end is square to the center line of the roller.
ROLLER SHAFTS: All shafts are manufactured from low carbon, free cutting steel to ASNZS 1443
bright bar. By moving the bearing closer to the roller support we can save weight and material in the
roller manufacture due to the increased mechanical advantage of bearing placement.
STUB SHAFTS: Our composite rollers utilize a Patented and Design Registered stub shaft. These
stub shafts are purpose made with high precision and are permanently adhered to the roller shaft
during production. We have selected a high strength adhesive which far exceeds the requirements of
the roller even under abnormally adverse conditions. Finishing of these stub shafts is via blackening to
prevent corrosion. These are available in stainless steel should there be an application that needs this
added protection.
BEARING RETENTION: Bearings are secured in housings via an interference fit. They are
positively located on the roller stub shaft during assembly utilizing the specially designed external
shoulder.
IDLER ROLLER BEARINGS: VLI’s Composite Rollers are fitted with single row deep groove ball
bearings, ZZ shielded type, with a C3 or C4 internal clearance. We have selected these bearings because
they give up to ten minutes angular deflection in their operation, coupled with even load distribution
within each bearing race.

resistance to water wash out. Operating temperatures -20°c to +130°c, drop point 184°c.

IMPACTS: Manufactured from either natural or FRAS rubber with 60 - 70 Shore A hardness and
pressed onto tube assemblies.
R.D.R.T. RETURNS & V RETURNS: Manufactured from either natural or FRAS rubber with 60 - 70
Shore A hardness and pressed on at spacings to aid tracking and cleaning.
REPLACEMENT ROLLERS
VLI rollers have their own dimensional standards with regard to shell face width and back to back slot
dimensions, etc. as set out in this catalogue. However, VLI can tailor make rollers to suit client’s needs, as
in most cases companies have many varying roller brands in service.
VLI can provide a service to the client by inspecting the site and ensuring the correct replacement roller
is manufactured.
DRAWINGS
VLI Conveyors produce full 3D models and detailed drawing in A3 and can provide individual roller details
as required. 3D Models are available on request for conveyor design purposes.
Detailed roller data sheets are provided for each type of roller used to ensure the correct replacement of
rollers.
