Allocated Tasks

3.1. Intern’s Assignment

Several tasks were given during the internship program. They are given as follows.

• View the distribution transformer from the outside.

• Check out the transformer's insides.

• I learned about every piece of transformer equipment and how it works.

• When it comes to oil, I have learned when it's necessary to centrifuge it.

• Oil testing machine was observed.

• The types of paper that must be used in transformers were seen.

• Learning the primary goal of employing a power transformer in a substation.

• Observing the many parts of a power transformer.

• CT and PT Principles of Operation.

3.2. Technological Attributes (Internship)

Earth Resistivity Testing:

To test soil resistivity, connect the Fluke 1625-2 to four stakes in the ground. The earth ground
tester will generate a known current through the outer two stakes and the inner two will measure
any drop in voltage potential. The tester then automatically calculates soil resistance using
Ohms law.

7
Figure 3.1: Earth Resistivity Testing (Megger).

Switchgear:

Figure 3.2: Switchgear

Switchgear refers to a variety of switches, circuit breakers, fuses, and other components that
are used in an electric power system to manage, regulate, and turn circuits on and off.
Switchgear protects and isolates electrical equipment from the power source by managing the
circuit, allowing for testing, maintenance, and fault clearing.

8
Power Transformer:

Figure 3.3: Power Transformer

The power transformer has a similar function as the distribution transformer. A better protective
mechanism for the power transformer is needed, which necessitates the installation of a
Buchholz relay. Breather is clearly seen in this illustration. Also visible are the HT and LT
lines. A fan is located behind the transformer's body and is used to keep the transformer cool
(known as forced cooling).

Circuit Breaker:

Circuit breakers are typically placed so that each transformer, bus bar, distribution line, and so
on can be completely isolated from the system's grid. These circuit breakers should have enough
ability to carry the highest short-circuit current that could run through them for a brief period
before interrupting it.

9
Figure 3.4: Circuit Breaker

A circuit breaker is a piece of equipment that,

• Create or break a circuit in standard form, either manually or remote control.

• Automatically break a circuit if a defect is detected.

• Make a circuit below the defect form, either manually or with a remote controller.

Relay timer:

Figure 3.5: Relay timer

10
Time relays are used to control current and can be used to control the power of many diverse
types of electrical loads. These relays are pre-designed to combine the performance of
electromechanical output relays with control circuit to perform up to 11 delay functions. In fact,
all time delay relays can perform eleven specific functions. This is the standard common to all
brands. The user selects the desired function by turning the knob or some other interface. When
the per-set time is reached, the signal from the control circuit will be input to the relay to activate
the function of the relay. Then the power supply at the input terminal of the relay is switched
to the output terminal.

Control Panel:

Figure 3.6: Control Panel

Control Panel is used for controlling the generator. Panel works with 12V DC voltage. It is
installed by EST (Electronic Service Tools) software. Using the control panel I can see the
voltage, current, frequency, oil pressure, speed etc.

3.3. Challenges Encountered (Skilled to be gained)

There are skills learned during the internship. It is the reality that no one knows everything.
During the internship, we visited the generators of CNEEC at various sites. I learned many
things were learned and able to gain technical skill and soft skill. But during this time many
new things also came and faced challenges. The ability to overhaul engines, repair and maintain
power generator sets, and machine components was new to me. There were also some more
challenges. Primary side or HT side Delta connected, and LT or secondary side Y connected.
The process of working the tap changer was also a new thing to me. During the internship, I
learned a lot about substations, which was helpful for the interns.

12
3.4. Norms of Engineering Practice [For OBE]

Prior to becoming an engineer, one must be familiar with engineering standards. Several
engineering standards were adhered to during the internship, including the code of ethics, and
chain of command. Throughout the internship, strict adherence to ethical standards was
required.

3.4.1 Practical Engineering Problem

To become an engineer, an engineer must solve many engineering problems. Several problems
are also practiced during the internship term. Generator oil tests, Circuit breaker tests, Relay
and timer checked, Cable Connector checked, Cable Lugs Replaced, and other sorts of tests
were seen. In addition, I learned when such tests are required. Some power transformers are
also placed in substation and became familiar with all the parts of the power transformer. When
we visited different sites, there were some other issues related to generator and transformer
which were also solved by the help of supervisor.
3.4.2 Individual Responsibilities based on norms of engineering practice in Teamwork.

During my internship, some engineering standards were closely adhered to, both for my own
safety and that of others. To avoid any dangers while working with electrical equipment or a
high-voltage line, engineering practice standards should be followed to ensure safe working
conditions, such as:

1. Warning signs that were installed on electrical equipment were followed strictly to prevent any
kind of hazards.
2. Proper safety measures were taken such as wearing a safety helmet and shoes for safety
purposes while visiting sub-station.
3. Proper distance from the energized equipment was maintained for our own safety while doing
the observation.
4. Professionals must always behave to safeguard the assets of the company, which include
tangible, intangible, and electronic or digital properties.

13
3.5. Etiquette and Ethics while doing internship.
I learned about etiquette in undergrade life. It was suggested that I use all our faculties to
develop ourselves as ethical people. These skills are necessary in both personal and professional
life. Internship is the first step in my professional life when I may assess my etiquette and ethics.
Aside from that, I have been learning more about professionalism. During my internship, I do
my best to prepare myself for the internship atmosphere. During my internship, I was never
late. I followed the company's chain of command. During the working period, ethics were
upheld. Never revealed any of the company's secrets to anyone. I also informed the supervisor
if any inconvenience was caused unintentionally.

14
Chapter 4

Acquired Knowledge

4.1 Technological Learnings

During internship, I have learned technological things. In four different sections it will be
discussed.

Observations:
As an internship student, I closely observed the technological working procedure conducted by
technicians with the assistance of engineers while on the job. In the internship program, I have
learned that every single engineering work requires proper planning before starting the work.
Even the smallest details matter a lot. I have also saw some engineering issues on the projects.
The issues can be solved with the help of proper knowledge and guidance. The capability of
overhauling engines and repairing and maintaining power generator sets and machine
components are one of many ways of contributing to customers’ success and satisfaction.
Besides, stakeholders and counterparts in the industry have lauded our facilities of engine
overhauling, repairing, and rebuilding. CNEEC's workshop also conforms to actual guidelines
of contamination control compliance. CNEEC also follows a production line method to ensure
quick service for all products.

Mode of Operation:

During the internship, I have learned many things. I learned how to operate a Generator and a
transformer, AutoCAD Electrical Design, Earth Resistivity Testing.

Hard skills, soft skills development:

I learned to repair an alternator and an Auto Transfer Switch (ATS) during this internship. Now
I know what tools and methods to use to repair an Alternator and an ATS. This type of activity
helps me to enhance my hard talents. Additionally, some other skills were also learned during

15
the learning period. Such as communication skills, professionalism, teamwork, communication
with supervisor, and many other skills that were especially important for further growth as an
engineer.

4.2 Professional Skills

To succeed in the working world, an intern student needs to learn valuable skills while on the
job.

4.2.1 Maintain hierarchy:

Maintaining hierarchy is essential in every company. hierarchy places a few talented leaders at
the top of an organization, guiding strategy and operations for the organization's growth and
success. Employees with a hierarchical structure have more prospects for advancement and
promotions, which can motivate them to perform better and boost job satisfaction, which will
help the company flourish.

4.2.2 Intern’s interaction with his reporting manager and co-workers:

Both the intern and the supervisor must work together to make the internship a success. Because
he is the one who showed the intern the right path, the supervisor can properly guide the intern.
My supervisor Md. Masum Billah is a wonderful person who is concerned about my future
career. He tries to keep me motivated so that I do not give up. I admire him as well. I made
every effort to follow his instructions.

4.2.3 Presentations, Assignments:

My intern's supervisor gave me an assignment to write a brief overview of a Transmission

substation. He instructed me to write out what kinds of tough and interesting experiences I had
during my internship. He showed me the various parts of the generator. Through which many
parts were completely new to me. At the end of the internship, my supervisor gave me a written
test.

4.2.4 Time management:

The most valuable commodity is time. Punctuality is required in the workplace. My reporting
time is 10 a.m., and I never miss it while interning. I tried to report by 9:45 a.m. every day.
With a timetable, the supervisor assigns a few responsibilities related to distribution,
generating, and transmission lines.

4.3 Recognizing the need for professional skills:

Skills are needed in our life. To do something we need to gain basic skills to perform. There
are two parts in this section which have been discussed below.

4.3.1 Motivation for Professional Development

Everyone aspires to be successful in their careers so that they can live happy lives. Everyone
must concentrate on their professional development to be successful in life. So, while someone
may be professional, he must continually improve his professionalism with the support of the
company's environment. Professional development is beneficial to employers, which means it
17
is beneficial to the organization as well. When employers conduct themselves professionally
with others, the company's growth grows as well. The corporation then has faith in the
employees. Employers have a safe environment in which to work. Employers must establish
connections with one another and operate as a team to achieve the greatest results. If someone
wants to effectively show their career and correct their status, they must concentrate on
professional development.

4.3.2 Recognizing the need for professional skills:

Professional qualities are required in the workplace. Without professional abilities, no one can
maintain a stable position in the workplace. Soft skills are more crucial in the workplace.
Communication skills are extremely crucial in the workplace. Engineers must have solid
communication skills to build a good network with other engineers and a good relationship with
their clients and other companies in their working lives. As a result, the employer will be
pleased with his work. Another key quality for an engineer is the capacity to lead others. If you
are an engineer, you will certainly need to collaborate with others. Communication, as well as
leadership abilities, are both vital in teamwork. You must have the guts to lead the team in a
positive manner so that everyone follows your instructions, which is beneficial to all engineers
and businesses. Another skill is the capacity to keep track of time. In engineering, there are
numerous projects that must be completed by a certain date. Every project should be completed
on time. When everything is completed in a timely manner, the organization will receive
increased projects, which is beneficial to both engineers and businesses. The capacity to make
quick decisions is also a professional skill.

4.4 Participation in professional societies and meetings

In professional life participation in professional societies and meetings are important, which
have been discussed below.

4.4.1 Participation in Team Meeting:

I have done my internship. I joined my internship on 14 December 2023 in China National
Electric Engineering Co., Ltd. (CNEEC). On the first day introductory meeting was held, and
this meeting was led by honorable supervisor Md Masum Billah, Electrical Design Manager,
CNEEC. He gave me a brief introduction to CNEEC. He also gave me an overview of different
18
substations and Generators under CNEEC. I visited two substations and three workshops.
During my internship, we took part in all group discussions organized by our group and shared
our innovative ideas with our group members. In our group meeting, we also discussed several
types of issues and uncertainty related to our internship.

Participation in Professional Societies:

In professional societies everyone needs to take part in seminars/workshop related to profession
so that everyone gathers more knowledge and ideas about everyone’s profession. My internship
was about the manufacturer of electrical equipment-related substations and designing. I did my
internship at China National Electric Engineering Co., Ltd. (abbr. CNEEC). The main work of
this company is supply, installation, and commissioning of substations. CNEEC imports
generators at a power generating range of 100-8625 KVA. So, in the meeting arranged by this
company for the interns, they discussed in detail the substation with its installation and how to
start the generators engine. We took part in that meeting and gained substation-related
knowledge which will be extremely helpful for my job life in the future.

19
Chapter 5

Conclusion

5.1. Internship Review

The internship at CNEEC was quite valuable. I studied theoretical topics in undergrade life and
observed them in CNEEC. I was quite fortunate to be offered an internship with CNEEC, a
power distribution company. This internship broadened my practical knowledge by improving
my thinking capacity, timeliness, self-confidence, and compliance with laws and regulations,
among other things. I just want to express that this internship has helped me grow as a potential
engineer. Throughout the internship period, I received a great deal of guidance from my
supervisor, who guided me through the sessions. He provided me with a great deal of motivation
and made every effort to ensure that I was well prepared for corporate life. Interning at China
National Electric Engineering Co., Ltd. (CNEEC) have benefited me in a variety of ways,
including:

• Assisting me in honing my communication skills and learning how to interact with

coworkers.

• Observing the company's daily operations and working process has taught me more about
collaboration and how people can work together to complete their tasks effectively.

• Had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see and operate with power distribution related
Generator.

• The ability to critically reflect on previous experiences, which aided me in learning new
things faster and expressing greater creativity in my job.

20
5.2. Impact on Career Planning

Internships are particularly important for undergraduate students. Several things were taught
throughout the internship, which is a form of pre-requisite. It was a fantastic opportunity for
me. In terms of practical knowledge, I have learned a great deal. All these things, I believe, will
assist me in furthering my profession soon. I have developed a few specific areas, such as
effective communication, maintaining the chain of command, junior-senior contact, teamwork,
and so on. CNEEC's management structure was excellent, and they coached me properly so
that I could excel at my next level.

5.3. University-Organizational Affiliation

Without the enthusiasm of the university and the organization, a relationship will never be good.
An internship benefits both the university and the organization. The university can theoretically
and practically prepare pupils. An industrial organization can teach many jobs through
undergraduate student's internships that play a significant role in their career. However, there
are a few things that are impossible to perform in practice, and organizations can assist people
in putting those things into practice. An intern student from a university joins a corporation and
completes his internship there. If he performs well, the employer may decide to keep him
because he has learned a lot during his internship. As a result, because the student was from
that university, the university benefits. The company benefits as well since they gain a skilled
employer. Southeast University is one of the best private universities in the country. This
university's faculty works hard to ensure that we are appropriately prepared. However, no one
can teach everyone everything. Everyone could gain experience in a practical setting thanks to
CNEEC. Hopefully, many southeast university students will have the opportunity to intern at
China National Electric Engineering Co., Ltd. (CNEEC) in the future.

21
5.4. Recommendations for Future strategic actions

As an intern, I have learned a great deal. I would like to thank the EEE Department of
Southeast University for keeping an internship in our curriculum which is important for our
future employment. However, if I learn a few more things, it will be beneficial to me. I can
recommend or advise a few things to future students, such as ATS testing process, Fault in
stator motor, megger testing, short circuit testing, open circuit testing, and so on. If internship
students can accomplish these goals, it will have a positive impact on their future. The
recommendations are given below-

• Overall design idea about a distribution sub-station.

• Working principle of Auto Transfer Switch (ATS).

• Overall idea about line maintenance & repair.

• Working principle of Alternator.

• Participation in administrative works.
