SHOP TALK NEWSLETTER

ISSUE 5: Insurance scams, invitation to write, Second Class Program petition,
concerns survey, ULP update, insurance in the Contract, Truck Shop Survey,
Graffiti Removal Track, my expulsion from the Board Meeting. Additional issues
are on hold while I spend time on fighting false charges served by fellow
officers.

Five responses. Am delegating non-Shop workers to appropriate Board members.

REGISTRATION, VIRTUAL MEETINGS

● Virtual Union Hall registration: A total of 117 registered. I need to
visit shops in person to boost the totals.
● Virtual Meetings: I have been distracted with fighting the false charges
and had very little energy to organize more meetings.
● Sessions in 2024: 1/08, 1/21

FACILITY VISITS, ULP’S, GRIEVANCES, COMPLAINTS & BAD MANAGERS

1. Unfair Labor Practice Charges: The CTA has responded to my ULP (L-CA-24-
009) and is denying any guilt for violating protected speech. I am still
awaiting a response from the ILRB.
2. Various complaints and issues: I am receiving unprecedented calls,
messages and one-on-one complaints from members who are being punished
for sickness, denied worker’s compensation, denied their choice for
union representation, manager harassment and unsafe working conditions.
We need to invest in training them to become stewards. I am hoping my
recommendations as per the Local 308 bylaws will be honored. Almost all
punishment hearings have been related to sickness. We need to strike for
accruable sick days. Our members are literally dying out here! SCP
“Apprentices” are punished according to a more severe version of the
CAG. I submitted a class action grievance about it. See attachment.
3. Mismanagers List: I am keeping a spreadsheet of outlaw and tyrannical
managers. It is growing by the week. Send me names and I will add.
4. False charges: I have gathered over 115 signatures to promote the voting
down of the false charges by fellow union officers. We need to focus on
issues like accruable paid sick time and other important things in our
Contract. Not trying to silence officers who we dislike. See attachment.

HAZARDS
We need laptops for every Rail Car Repairer NOW. This is an essential tool. We
are sharing 1-3 laptops and they are mostly barely working. We need a $1000+
tool allowance. No less! We need to organize multiple meetings to improve the
Excel program. But frankly, if I don’t get my prescribed 6 days off per month—
as per the bylaws—I can barely do anything to help my department.

0700: 95th Servicer: Says Mgmt here is terrible. Gonna pick out next Pick. Gave her Shop Talk and
offered to help do WC on mgr. Wants to know the status of grievances and process timelines. Gave a
card and suggested to call me so I can give her flowchart and referral.
0733: Arr Lake. Met RSM workers on the way to CTA HQ. Answered questions, informed and listened.
0805: Arr Starbucks. Study Union Steward Guide book.
0830: Arr CTA HQ. Check in. Meet with ET
0845: Rosado takes us to a meeting. Exceptionally professional for a CTA manager.
0940: Finished with coworker ET.
0945: Saw two coworkers TJ and DB who were laid off from SCP, dropping off their vests for Aaron
Simon.
1000: Aaron Simon took DB and confirmed did not want me present. Aaron Simon appeared surprised or
annoyed by my presence. Made TJ turn in vest, bump cap and flashlight and promised receipt. Still
waiting.
1025: TJ wanted to leave. No receipt. We decided to stay in touch. I took a picture of his receipt.
1035: Boarded Pink Line to 54th
1100: Arr 54th. Check in at the shop office and visit. Spoke with multiple members. Listened to

virtual union hall posters and distributed Shop Talk in the breakroom.
1335: Dep 54th
1345: Phone call with member SB about the case. Video update to members at Lake.

Case: Brother Eddie Thomas (ET) She said just received requested info on previous case regarding
marijuana use card holder. No information about that on record. I never received it either. I suggested with
you newly taking office, it was chaotic and not intentional. So we chose to take more time to get the total
medical note—not a card—from ET doctor. Got email from her today to confirm all he needs to do is email
her and I the note. Then she will notify us of the next step. He seems to have accepted that he will be
terminated, but wants to go down fighting and I pledged to support him. He is very clear on strategy and
may choose to resign instead so that he can possibly rejoin the CTA at a later date. We both agreed that
Manager Rosado seemed accommodating for us to caucus. We agreed to keep you in the loop.

Cases: Despite my arguments of retaliatory and unfair punishment against Brother Charles Williams,
Manager Chris Sandoz was insistent that he was guilty of “poor work performance.” Sandoz is a known
taskmaster and bully when it comes to workers who want to work safely. I know from first-hand

experience. He had been after Charles for the entire Pick and got his chance. I wrote a grievance for him.
He seemed demoralized. I am not sure he will turn it in. I organized a flash protest around 6:30 am.

Brother Eddie Thomas chose to resign. I told him I supported whatever decision he made. I did email my
congressman to plead for changes to the FTA drug policy: Medicinal use of marijuana needs to be free of
penalties.

Sister Sheletha Bohannan was terminated. Despite my clear arguments that skipping CAG steps to
immediate termination and discrimination for being in ARC were not right, Manager Aaron Simon insisted
on punishing her. He refused to show me where in the Contract or CTA Rules where he could fire her for
one violation. She signed it. I suggested she write “unfair” on it. I immediately wrote a grievance for her
and she accepted it.

Summary: The CTA mismanagement is brutally mistreating us through violation of Article 1.1 “…to
provide the best possible working conditions…” It is anything but that with the punishment we receive for
being sick and caring for sick dependents.

These writeups and terminations would not exist if we had Full Time Jobs For All and accruable paid sick
days. We need to organize the workers for strikes to get the justice they need. Otherwise, we will continue
to clean up the bloody mess of our destruction by our employer and have no power to stop it.

Managers Lolita, Stacey and others are cruel and brutal taskmasters who terrorize the members. We
need to help members write up and protest against these evil people.

The Second Chance Program is an abomination and must be eliminated or changed in the 2024
Contract1. The CTA is punishing them unfairly and more harshly than the rest of the FTP, FTT and PTT
workers.2

Class Action Grievance: The CTA has established a separate,

abnormal disciplinary (punishment) guidelines regarding the Second
Chance "Apprentice" Program (SCP). They are punished with
greater severity than all the other CTA union workers.

The SCP workers are not being punished according to 3 of the 7

Tests for Just Cause: Equal treatment, progressive discipline, and
regard of past practice. The SCP abnormal guidelines are not
recognized in Attachment O of the Collective Bargaining Agreement
between the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) and the CTA.

The CTA must immediately cease using the abnormal disciplinary

guidelines, make whole those affected by it, offer reemployment to
those who were terminated in excess of the normal CTA Corrective
Action Guidelines, make the workers whole in lost wages and not
discriminate for opportunities in Full Time Permanent jobs. Attached
copies of the normal and abnormal Corrective Action Guidelines.
Summary of disparate treatment when comparing
the abnormal Corrective Action Guidelines for
Second Chance Program workers versus the
normal Corrective Action Guidelines for all other
bargained for CTA employees.
