ASSIGNMENT 1- PROBLEM SOLVING
Topics: Distance, Displacement, Speed and Velocity and Acceleration

1. A body thrown vertically upwards reaches a maximum height h. It then returns to

ground. Calculate the distance travelled and displacement. (Ans: 2h, zero)
2. A body travels a distance of 15 m from A to B and then moves a distance of 20 m at
right angles to AB. Calculate the total distance travelled and displacement.
(Ans: 35 m, 25 m)
3. A particle is moving in a circle of diameter 5 m. Calculate the distance travelled and
the displacement when it completes 3 revolutions. (Ans: 15 ∏ m, Zero)
4. A particle is moving in a circle of diameter 20 m. If it completes its journey as
mentioned in the table given below then calculate the distance covered and the
displacement in each of the following cases.
Sr. No. Rounds Distance Displacement
1 1
2 1/4
3 1/2
4 3/4
5 1.5
6 2
7 2.5
5. In a long-distance race, the athletes were expected to take 4 rounds of the track such
that the line of finish was same as the line of start. Suppose the length of the track was
200 m.
a) What is the total distance to be covered by the athletes?
b) What is the displacement of the athletes when they touch the finish line?
c) Is the motion of an athlete uniform or non-uniform?
d) Is the displacement of an athlete and the distance moved by him at the end of
the race equal? (Ans: a) 800 m, b) Zero, c) Non- uniform, d) No)
6. An object travels 16 m in 4 s and then another 16 m in 2 s. What is the average speed
of the object? (Ans: 5.33 m/s)
7. Jainil swims in a 90 m long pool. He covers 180 m in 1 minute by swimming from one
end to another and back along the same straight path. Find the average speed and
average velocity of Jainil. (Ans: 3 m/s, Zero)
8. Aakash is moving in his car with a velocity of 45 km/h. How much distance will he
cover (a) in 1 minute and (b) in 1 second? (Ans: 750 m, 12.5 m)
9. An electric train is moving with a velocity of 120 km/h. How much distance will it
move in 30 s? (Ans: 1000 m)
10. A body is moving with a velocity of 15 m/s. If the motion is uniform, what will be the
velocity after 10 s? (Ans: 15 m/s)
11. The maximum speed of a train is 90 km/h. It takes 10 hours to cover a distance of 500
km. Find the ratio of its average speed to maximum speed? (Ans: vavg =50 km/h,
ratio: 5:9)
12. A train 100 m long moving on a straight level track passes a pole in 5 s. Find (a) the
speed of the train, (b) the time it will take to cross a bridge 500 m long. (Ans: (a) 20
m/s, (b) 30 s)
13. Starting from a stationary position, Rahul paddles his bicycle to attain a velocity of 6
m/s in 30 s. then he applies brakes such that the velocity of bicycle comes down to 4
m/s in the next 5 s. Calculate the acceleration of the bicycle in both the cases. (Ans:
0.2 m/s2, -0.4 m/s2)
14. During an experiment, a signal from a spaceship reached the ground station in five
minutes. What was the distance of the spaceship from the ground station? The signal
travels at the speed of light, that is, 3 × 108 m/s. (Ans: 9 × 109 m)
15. A body starts rolling over a horizontal surface with an initial velocity of 0.5 m/s. Due
to friction, its velocity decreases at the rate of 0.05 m/s2. How much time will it take
for the body to stop? (Ans: 10 s)
16. A car travelling at 36 km/h speeds up to 72 km/h in 5 seconds. Calculate the
