resources put them in a unique position to make a difference to many, San Miguel focuses
on empowering communities and reaching out to underprivileged sectors of society.

● EDUCATION
A priority social cause to which we have committed ourselves for the long term
is education. Believing firmly in education’s power to transform lives, our
advocacy covers not only the granting through programs that benefit public
schools and educators.

● HEALTH AND NUTRITION

Through our community clinics and medical missions, we continue to provide our

individuals benefited from healthcare services offered for free at SMB community

suffering from diabetes, tuberculosis, and other cardiovascular diseases.

continue to implement programs advocating the preservation of our
environment and the responsible use of resources. In 2014, SMC, through SMC
Global Power, signed a covenant with the local government of Sual,
Pangasinan committing to provide residents with one million seedlings of
coconut, coffee, and cacao. To be distributed over the span of one year, the
seedlings, when ready for harvest, will serve as an additional source of livelihood
for residents. San Miguel Brewery, in partnership with the Armed Forces of the
Philippines, also continued its flagship environment project, “Trees Brew Life.”

country through imparting knowledge on how they can improve their crops.
Members of the company visit these farmers regularly to reinforce among them

Nestle is a supporter of the government’s pursuit to alleviate the shortage of
classrooms in public schools. It contributes to this advocacy through the
Donate-a-Classroom Program. It also offers practical and theoretical training to
selected students, in order to help them acquire more skills. In relation to this,
Nestle also conducts a Technical Skills Scholarship Program which is a
two-year program which combines theoretical and hands-on training. This is
implemented in cooperation with Don Bosco College in Canlubang, Laguna.
Nestle also conducts a program called Academic Linkage Program where it
provides training to selected students from educational institutions such as the De
La Salle University, Dualtech, Meralco Foundation Institute, and the Xavier
University in Cagayan de Oro.

where it operates.
The Nestle Factory in Lipa, Batangas conducts a Cut & Sew Livelihood Project,
which provides job opportunities to community workers by giving them the
factory’s orders for shoe covers, rags and uniforms. It also has a Yard and
Garden Livelihood Project which caters to unemployed barangay housewives in
the area where the factory operates. This project provides livelihood opportunities
through cut flower production and organic farming. In the same area, a Suklay
and Gunting Project is being implemented, which involves hands-on training on
hairdressing for housewives.
At the Nestle Cabuyao Factory, selected spouses of employees are developed as
trainers under the Misis Trainors Program. The participants of this program
conduct livelihood workshops for other spouses and members of their
communities.
A showcase for culinary lessons called Julius Maggi Kitchen located in
Rockwell Center, is a venue for lifestyle improvement sessions, which is one way
through which Nestle helps its consumers enjoy its products.

integration of all environmental initiatives in the various aspects of business
operations. The company also has a company-wide Solid Waste Management
Program which aims to reduce waste not only in the factories and offices but as
well as the houses of its employees.
The company also conducts the multi-awarded program called Greening the
Supply Chain which is a combination of an outreach and education program
aimed to encourage and assist its business partners in developing and maintaining
their own environmental management systems.
It is also an advocate for clean air and conducts a periodical free Air ffa mission
Testing on the vehicles of employees, business partners and community residents
where the company operates, in order to help rid the environment of air pollution.

3. COCA-COLA PHILIPPINES
Coca-Cola is one of the world’s largest companies. In fact, Coca-Cola generated
around 35.1 billion dollars in revenue. The Coca Cola corporate social responsibility
program tries to give back to society in its own ways. Let us look at this CSR program to
understand where Coca-Cola Inc. stands in terms of their CSR initiatives.

● WASTE REDUCTION
One of the most common themes of sustainability across different companies is
reduction of waste. In fact, this is one of the most tangible and visible
sustainability problems plaguing this world right now. We have already mentioned
that over a period of time, Coca-Cola has transformed its bottle manufacturing.
Currently all their models are made from recycled materials.

Additionally, Coca-Cola also attempts to make all of their packaging recyclable.

They have set a deadline of 2025 for this. Currently (as per Coca-Cola 2019 CSR
report), about 88% of their packaging is Recyclable. They’ve also pledged to cut
down on the material itself. Reduction in the material is also a great way to reduce
the ecological footprint of a product. In fact, they have also pledged to work on
the second R of the reduce, reuse, recycle. Coca Cola has claimed that they will
recycle by collecting all the bottles and cans.

● REPLENISHMENT OF WATER
Water is a peculiar element. On one hand, water is the world’s most common
resource. However, on the other hand, drinkable, potable water is getting more
and more difficult to find. One of the criticisms of Coca Cola stems from its
massive use of freshwater. Coca-Cola incorporation has taken up some initiatives
to answer this problem. As per their 2019 sustainability report, they have
replenished almost 160% of all the waters that they have used in their beverages.
This makes the company net water positive. Additionally, they have been striving
to reduce the amount of water consumed for production. Currently they use about
1.85 liters per liter of beverages prepared.

Nevertheless, we shall look at their efforts in a more objective manner. One of the
rating measures is the carbon disclosure project or CDP. Coca-Cola has been
awarded a grade of A- by the CDP in 2019. The carbon disclosure project takes
into account all the different aspects of the life cycle of a product.

● REDUCTION OF CARBON FOOTPRINT

A carbon footprint is defined as the total amount of carbon dioxide that is released
into the atmosphere because of the activities of a firm. An initiative was started in
Coca Cola Inc in the year 2013 to cut down on their greenhouse gas emissions.
They have stated that they will cut down their greenhouse gas emissions by
almost a quarter by 2020.

Again, let us talk about the measurement criteria in the greenhouse gases
emissions. The GHG protocol provides specific typology for greenhouse gases
emissions as per the location of the activities. The scope one emissions and scope
two emissions are about the facilities within the organization. I would scope trees
related to the vendors. In the case of Coca-Cola, the scope three ambitions come
from other partners, like the bottling firms.

● MINIMIZING PACKAGING
The biggest criticism that Coca-Cola has faced is about the bottles. One of the
ways to solve this problem is to go for refillable bottles. However, taking this a
step further, we come to the water dispensing machines. Essentially, these are
Water dispensers which can refill any consumers’ bottle. Currently, these types of
systems are getting popular in developing countries. These water dispensers did
not just reduce the plastic waste. They also lead to cost savings for both the firm
as well as the consumers.

Coca-Cola also pledges to provide smaller packages. This ensures another benefit
to the consumers. We have seen that one of the criticisms of the drinks are the
high amounts of sugar. All the portion sizes are shown to reduce the sugar intake.
It also helps control opacity.

12-step program that teaches farmer seed culture and propagation, irrigation and
fertilizer application, among other skills. The KSK-FT is a joint undertaking of
SM Foundation with the private sector and government agencies.

● CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT & FOR THE PERSON WITH SPECIAL
NEEDS
SM's ongoing ecological programs have four componentsthat have been an
integral part of its operations and business practices: waste management, water
conservation, air quality efficiency, and energy quality efficiency. Apart from
being good business practices that have a sustainable impact on the mall and the
environment, these green programs ultimately benefit customers through its
efforts to create more eco-awareness.
