CVE 448 Wind Energy and Systems Homework

1. The wind velocity measured at 10 m height at a meteorological observatory is 7 m/s. Find out the
velocity at 40 m height at a wind turbine site having similar wind profile. The roughness heights at
the observatory and wind turbine location are 0.03 m and 0.1 m respectively.

2. A wind turbine with cut-in velocity 4 m/s and cut-out velocity 25 m/s is installed at a site with
Weibull shape factor 2.4 and scale factor 9.8 m/s. For how many hours in a day, will the turbine
generate power? Also estimate the probability of wind velocity to exceed 35 m/s at this site.

3. Estimate the Weibull factors k and c for the data in Table below using the standard deviation

4. Generate and plot the cumulative distribution for the wind data in Table above using the
Rayleigh distribution. Compare the result with the Weibull model and field data.
Solution:
1)

Z=40 , ZR=10, Z0=0.1, Z0R=0.3

The velocity for 40m height

60
( )
V(Z)= V(ZR) *[ ln Z 0 R ∗ln ¿¿ ]

60
( )
V(40)= V(7)* ln 0.03 ∗ln ¿ ¿

V(40)= 8.576 m/s

2)

For Uci=4 m/s, Uco=25m/s, c=9.8m/s , k=2.4

Uci Uco
P(u)= exp [-( C ¿ k] – exp [-( C ¿ k]

4 25
P(u)= exp [-( 9.8 ¿2.4 ] – exp [-( 9.8 ¿2.4 ] =0.89

That means that 89% of the total hours of the year is in this range

Then 0.89 * (8760 hr/year) = 7796 hour in the year in this speed range

For the probability of wind speed 35m/s :

ua k
P(Ua)= ∫ f (u)du = exp [-( c ¿ ]
Ua

35 2.4
P(35)= exp [-( 9.8 ¿ ] = 6*10-9

Total time at this speed in a year

6*10-9 * 8760 = 0.000005256 hr/year
