“The Bishop’s Candlesticks” brings forth the noble values of sympathy, kindness, charity,
selflessness, forgiveness, family bonding and fair distribution of natural resources and
socio-political and economic equality. The Bishop’s selflessness, love for God and his
fellow human- beings, makes him help the people in need and sorrow. The hardened
convict finds the strength to start a new life owing to the forgiveness and kindness of the
Bishop. Persome’s love for her brother reveals strong bonds between family members.
The drama sends a strong message of love and compassion for all. Social progress and
prosperity will leave little room for sinful acts. The world can become a better place, to
live in, if we develop a respectful attitude, towards each other. All wealth belongs to the
creator and we are the children of the same God. The convict is the product of the society
he lived in, both in terms of suffering, that led him to steal, for want of food, as well as the
cruel punishment, for such a meager crime. We must work to live in peace and harmony.
„Hate the sin, and not the sinner‟ is an age old maxim, based on the cardinal values of all
religions.

11. B.When Gulliver’s practice did not flourish much, he asurgeon’s job in a ship Antelope’ 10x1=
bound for sea. O n its way from Bristol to East Indies the ship was caught in a violent 10
storm which drifted it away. Immoderate labour and lack of food adversely affected the
crew’s health, claiming twelve lives and leaving the others incapacitated and absolutely
drained out. To make things worse, due to poor visibility, the crew detected a rock bit too
late and violent winds struck the ship against this rock causing a shipwreck. A boat to

which Gulliver shifted along with five other companions, too could not stand the fury of
the storm. Unaware of the fate of others, Gulliver swam as long as his stamina could carry
him. After some time, the storm subsided and Gulliver found his feet touching the bottom.
He now walked for about a mile and reached the shore. After covering another half a mile,
Gulliver laid down on the soft grass and went off to sleep. His good luck and perseverance
thus brought him to Lilliput.

OR

As soon as Gulliver steps onto the floating island, he is surrounded by a crowd of people.
He finds them very strange even though they are of a size similar to his. Their heads are
slanted to the left or right, and their clothes have pictures of either musical instruments or
astronomical signs.

Gulliver learns that he is on Laputa. The people here have terribly short attention spans, so
they carry around "Flappers." These are used for hitting other people during conversation
in order to keep them focused. After dinner a man is sent to teach Gulliver the language.

Gulliver finds that the Laputian houses are built very poorly and with no right angles. This
is odd because the men here are obsessed with mathematics. The people here never have
peace of mind. They are constantly worrying about dangers such as the possibility that the
sun might go out. The women are very sexual creatures who often cheat on their
husbands, especially with their preferred men from Balnibarbi, but the men are so
wrapped up in mathematics that they do not notice. The King of Laputa is not remotely
interested in the government of England.

Laputa is floating above Balnibarbi, the island on which he landed his canoe. Laputa
contains 10,000 acres and is perfectly circular. It is able to move about the surface of
Balnibarbi but not beyond its borders, and it can move up and down because of its
magnetic forces. When a town from Balnibarbi acts up, the King has Laputa moved
directly above it so that it can receive no sun or rain. No one from the Royal family is
allowed to leave Laputa.
