INTRODUCTION TO THE CASE-

This case study emphasizes the speed of healthcare and the importance of efficiently
managing hospital resources and patient data in order to provide the highest quality medical
services. BGS, a well-known multi-specialty hospital, has streamlined its operations by
implementing the Hospital Management System (HMS). This system would include various
aspects and criteria of hospital management, such as patient records, department information,
admissions, discharge, and the type of diagnosis and treatments provided. The case study also
seeks to create and implement an Entity-Relationship Model that will aid in the development
of a database for the BGS hospital that will facilitate the seamless handling of patient records,
information, doctor schedules, and administrative tasks. This would include a variety of
research departments, medical records, checkups, and treatments provided to patients.

PROBLEM STATEMENT-
Recently, a leading multi-specialty hospital and a healthcare institution faced challenges in
efficiently managing their resources. The issue may arise when it comes to the current manual
system, which lacks a lot of organisational scalabilities, resulting in constraints in medical
services. It would be important to know whether the hospital can effectively manage its
database by handling various aspects of operations.

FACTS THAT COULD BE ANALYSED-

People in the hospital are seeking treatment for a variety of medical conditions. The hospital's
departments could be divided into Pathology, Dental, Gynaecology, Neurology, and so on.
Patients who visit the hospital will be given an entry card with Out Patient departments and
In-Patient departments, and based on the individual's medical history and concerns, patients
will be scheduled appointments with doctors who specialise in such diagnoses, with the
option of choosing private or general rooms based on their medical assessments.
Before being admitted to the hospital, patients must complete all of the registration
procedures, such as paying the room charges, which are also managed by the research centres
that collect the data.
ER DIAGRAM-
An Entity-Relationship diagram is used and constructed to analyze the hospital's complex
structure and operation by taking into account various entities, relationships, and attributes
that depict various checkups, charges, treatments, and procedures that patients go through.

In the above ER diagram, the rectangular boxes represent entities Patient, Medical record,
Doctor, and Research center and each of the attributes are connected to the entities in which
the primary key is underlined, which represent some unique attributes that outstand from
other attributes.
1. Patient has a variety of attributes such as date of birth, email, address, phone number,
patient id which is a primary key, In patients, Outpatients, and the names of them
2. Appointment shows the relationship that the patient has with his/her medical records
3. Patient consults a doctor which is an entity and it has several attributes like doctor name,
age, and area of expertise.
4. The doctor is also connected to the research center as diagnosis reports given by the
research centers also help in connecting with the patient's records.
5. The medical records of patients have attributes like patient name, IDs, treatment to be
given, and date and it also has a derived attribute called Health Path which also has
several keys like sugar levels of patients, heart rate, etc.

ALTERNATE SOLUTIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS-
1. Implementing commercial hospital management software that provides comprehensive
solutions and models that are tailored to the needs of the hospital.
2. Open-source management systems may also be available to assist customers in customizing
their needs; however, these systems may have compatibility issues with existing systems.
3. Cloud-based systems could also be modified so that data is securely stored in the cloud and
accessible via the Internet.

CONCLUSION-
Each alternative solution has advantages and disadvantages; therefore, the hospital's needs
must be carefully evaluated by the management team based on the specific needs, long-term
goals, and stakeholders involved. A successful database system implementation requires
selecting and storing the appropriate attributes.
