Directions for scoring: The Psychological Capital Questionnaire has four subscales, Hope, Efficacy, Resilience,
and Optimism.

You will notice that items 13, 20 and 23 and reverse worded – that means that you need to reverse the score
before you can total each subscale. Therefore for items 13, 20, and 23 a score of 1 = 6, 2 = 5, 3 = 4, 4 = 3,
5 = 2, and 6 = 1. Make these changes first before you add up your scores.

Items Total Score

H. Hope
Items 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12
E. Self-Efficacy
Items 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
R. Resiliency
Items 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 (reverse 13)
O. Optimism
Items 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 (reverse 20 & 23)

Total Score

Interpreting your score: Your total scores for each subscale suggest your current tendencies concerning
these four psychological capital sub-scales. Your score for each of these sub-scales could range from 6 (a
total absence of this sub-scale) to 36 (a very high level of this sub-scale). Your total score could range from 24
to 144.

Your scores for each sub-scale can be interpreted as follows:

• Scores of 6 to 11 indicate a very low level of this sub-scale
• Scores of 12 to 17 indicate a low level of this sub-scale
• Scores of 18 to 23 indicate a moderate level of this sub-scale
• Scores of 24 to 29 indicate a high level of this sub-scale
• Scores of 30 or 36 indicate a very high level of this sub-scale
