Types of Bodies
The body is the basic structure of the vehicle, in which the passengers and cargo are
located. Furthermore, it is a very important element within the aesthetics of the vehicle,
since depending on the type of bodywork we may be talking about one vehicle or another.
Below we see the types of bodies that exist and their main characteristics .
TYPES OF BODYWORK
Chassis with separate bodywork : It is the chassis itself that supports the mechanical
parts, and can run even without a bodywork. The body constitutes an independent
assembly with its own floor, it is bolted to the chassis and can be separated for repair.
This type of body is mounted on off-road vehicles, vans, trucks, coaches and special
vehicles such as cranes.
Platform with separate body : The platform is a chassis formed by the union of
elements welded together, which supports the mechanical organs and the floor of the
vehicle. The body is attached to the platform with screws. This type of body can be
found in vehicles such as the Citroën Mehari or the 2CV .
Monocoque body : These are those bodies that are made of a single piece. It has
removable elements such as hoods, doors or bumpers. The first car to have a body of
this type was the Lancia Lambda , in 1923.
Self-supporting bodywork : The one mounted on most current vehicles. It is a set of
parts that make up the body, which are joined by means of welding. This allows its
repair to be very simple, simply by replacing the affected part. The external elements
are the fins, hood, bumpers, etc.
CLASSIFICATION OF BODYWORKS ACCORDING TO VOLUMES AND SHAPE
Minivan : The engine, passenger and trunk compartments are completely integrated.
Two volumes : With a space for the hood with the engine and another that combines
passengers and cargo.
Three volumes : the three aforementioned parts are differentiated: on the one hand the
engine, on the other the passenger compartment and finally the cargo.
Sedan : Type of bodywork of a three-volume passenger car in which the rear window is
fixed.
Three doors, 5 doors : The rear window is attached to the trunk lid.
Estate car : Also called station wagon, this is a vehicle with a raised roof up to the
tailgate that serves to more easily access the cargo platform.
