• Union Minister JP Nadda has been appointed the Leader

of the House in Rajya Sabha.

The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha
• President Droupadi Murmu administered oath to BJP member Bhartruhari
Mahtab as 'Speaker Pro-tem' of the newly constituted 18th Lok Sabha, tasked
with running the proceedings of the Lok Sabha on June 24 and 25
• The President has entrusted him with the duties of the Speaker (pro tem) under
Article 95(1) of the Constitution till the election of the new Speaker. Mahtab
will preside over the House as his colleagues take oath.
• The 18th Lok Sabha will also have an Leader of Opposition for the first time in
ten years.
• President Murmu will address the joint sitting of both houses on June 27.
• The session will conclude on July 3 and reassemble for the monsoon sitting on
July 22.

on 1 January 2007.
❖ Orissa to Odisha
• On 1 November 2011, the name of Orissa was changed to Odisha. The 96th Constitutional
Amendment Act 2011 amended the eighth schedule of the constitution and changed the name of
the Oriya language to Odia.
Formation of Kerala State

• The modern state of Kerala came into existence on 1 November 1956, when the

State Reorganisation Act 1956 was enacted, and 14 new States and 6 Union

Territories were created in the country.

• The Malayalam-speaking area of Malabar district of Madras State and the

Kasaragod taluk of South Canara district was merged with the Travancore-

Cochin State.

• Similarly, the Tamil-speaking areas of Southern Travancore-Cochin were merged

with Madras State.
