EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Internship is a job taken by an intern for the qualification of a particular certificate in his or
her respective field of study. For this reason in partial fulfilment to obtain a BACHELOR OF
ENGINEERING in MECHANICAL ENGINEERING from National Higher Polytechnic
Institute Bamenda, I carried out a two months internship at LAHMOTECH VOCATIONAL
TRAINING CENTRE located at food market Bamenda Mankon
It started on Tuesday the 1 st of August where interns were received at LAHMOTECH and
continued till the 31st of September. The following are the activities we carried out all through
the program. Orientation and identification of machines where we were thought the various
policies of the organisation and identified different types of machines in the workshop some
of the machines we identified were a lathe machine, grinding machine, drilling machine,
cutting machine and a welding machine.
We also observed the functioning of the different machines and the different operations on the
machines.
We did not only end at this level but we also did fabrication of different types of machines
like the wood spinning moulding machine, wood circular sawing machine and maize peeling
and grinding machine and also we did maintenances of some parts of machines. From all the
activities we carried out in LAHMOTECH, I ought to say that this internship has some
benefits to the interns like widening the interns mind when he/she sees what is thought in
class done practically, it also build in the students good skills and mastery of their fields of
studies, it built up internal confidence in the interns and lastly it create connections between
the students and experience personnel’s.
CHAPTER ONE
BACKGROUND OF INTERNSHIP
INTRODUCTION
Internship is a job taken by a student, an intern or group of students in order to learn a
profession or trade so as to qualify them for a particular task. This can be done in either a
period of one month or more, and a report is always written at the end of this program which
is known as internship report. For my own chase this program is a partial qualification of
Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering. The following points bellow explains the
general objectives of carrying out internship.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF CARRING OUT INTERSHIP

 Making the students to gain valuable skills and experiences in their various fields
 Building up the students with the edge, competency and confidence in the job market
 It is also aimed at providing network between students and professionals in the field
 Developing refine skills in the interns

I carried out my internship in LAHMOTECH VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE which

is a one man business enterprise. Like any other business, LAHMOTECH has it history that is
discussed below.

HISTORY OF LAHMOTECH VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE

As mention above, it is a one man business which was created in 2008 and still in this year, it
gained partnership with the ministry of vocational training. LAHMOTECH today has gained
partnership with many other organisations like National employment fund, Ministry of small
and medium size enterprise and social economy and handicraft and it is aimed at the
following

 Fabrication and maintenance of post harvest agric machine tools

 Fabrication and maintenance of wood working machines
 Fitting and maintenance of automobiles and heavy duty machined
 Carpentry and joinery

Apart from fabrication and maintenance, LAHMOTECH is also aimed at training people in
the things listed above

MOTTO OF LAHNOTECH: Think safety first

PRODUCTS, COMPITITION AND MARKETING
LAHMOTECH is involved in the production (fabrication) of agricultural machines like wood
sawing machine, spinning moulding machine etc it is also involved in maintenance of this
machines LAHMOTECH products and maintenance services has been in high demand in the
market especially here in Bamenda since it is competing with very few other businesses like
PRESSTECH while in other markets like in Douala where there are a lot competitors,
LAHMOTECH products and maintenance services are of lesser demand when compared
with the demand of products from other companies that makes LAHMOTECH to supply it
products more in Bamenda market where there are of high demands.

Tuesdays to Fridays 7:30am 11:00am to 11:30am 5:00pm
Saturdays 7:30am 11:30am to 1:00pm 4:00pm

WEEK ONE AND TWO

Through this week we did just two things that are orientation and identification of the
different types of machines and their functions.

ORIENTATION
The orientation was as follows on the first day, we had self introduction including our various
schools and departments we are from, and we were also taught the various principles in the
company and protective measures when operating on a machine

PRINCIPLES IN LAHMOTECH VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE

 Students must be punctual and very early during working days
 Students must not operate on machines when not authorized
 Students must respect their supervisors and employees in the company
 Interns must be keen during work and determine to learn
 5 Students must be ready to ask questions to express their doubts or ideas and also
willing to answer questions when ask

SAFETY ROLES WHEN OPERATING ON MACHINES

 Overalls and safety boats should be put on during working hours
 Long hair should be tied back and a head mate worn
 Put on goggles when welding and filling
 Work should be done with the greatest concentration
 The workshop should be kept clean every day

IDENTIFICATION OF MACHINE TYPES AND TOOLS

On the following days of this week, we had identification of machines and working tools in
LAHMOTECH.

MACHINES
 LATHE MACHINE

This is a power driven machine, and it is one of the versatile machine use to perform
many operations like drilling, turning, grooving, etc.

 DRILLING MACHINE
A power driven machine use to create holes of different diameters on a work piece
by the use of different drill beats
 WELDING MACHINE
Used for the attachment of metals to give the desired shape.

 GRINDING MACHINE
Power driven machine used for the smoothing of welded parts and sharpening of
drill beats. And the type we had in LAHMOTECH was pedestal grinding machine.

 CUTTING MACHINE
A power driven machine use in cutting of metals in their desired shapes and lengths
the type we used in LAHMOTECH was a hand cutting machine.

TOOLS
Apart from the machines mention above, LAHMOTECH also had tools like spanners,
extractors, S, squares, hammer, etc. Hence this week ended with the above mentioned being
carried out. Some of the machines and tools will be shown at the last page of the report.

WEEK THREE AND FOUR

The third and fourt weeks of the program was full of activities. We did observed and carry out
many operations on the various machines mentioned above. We observed how a cutting
machine was use to cut different metals to the desired length and shape and the type of cutting
machine that was used is an electric powered cutting machine. We did not only observe but
we practicalise the cutting operation.

Also, we carried out grinding operation on a pedestal grinding machine and some of the
things we did were sharpening of drills and smoothing of welded pieces as instructed by our
supervisor.

Continuing on the different operation on the various machines, we observed how drilling
operation was carried out where several holes of different diameters were drilled on a pillar
sensitive drilling machine using different drills.

Still in this week we observe the use of lathe machine to perform different lathe operations
like drilling, facing, turning, threading, grooving and boring. The lathe machine was the
heaviest and complicated machine we had in LAHMOTECH this machine is a power driven
machine and it was use to perform many operations like

 Drilling of large holes that cannot be drilled on a drilling machine(drilling)

 Production of internal and external threads that cannot be produced by taps and
dices(threading)
 Production of grooves on a pulley(grooving)
 Reduction of the diameter of a shaft(turning)
 Production of a smooth face on a shaft(facing)

The lathe machine was the one with the three jaw chuck so all this operation were carried out
only on cylindrical pieces. Apart from the above mentioned, we also did mounting of bearings
on shafts and mounting of pulleys on rotating shaft of electric motors and lastly, we did
maintenance of a bang sawing machine where we sandpaper the wheels and oil them for
smooth rotation and the cutting blade was fitted on the wheels while the wheels were
connected to an electric motor by a belt and after this, the machine was tested to be sure it
worked as required
WEEK FIVE AND SIX
During this week, we did fabrication of different machines and maintenance of a lathe
machine. We did maintenance on the chuck of a lathe machine that was bad so the chuck was
removed and the jaw keys adjusted.

On the following days of this week we did fabrication of different machines.

A] A SPINING MOULDING MACHINE

One of the first machine fabricated was a spinning moulding machine of size
180cm*180cm*180cm it was made up of the following parts a table, spinning shaft, electric
motto, moulding blade and a plank controller. The type of material used was steel even
though some parts required materials of higher density like the base of the machine so as to
support it functioning and also for it durability. This machine was an electric powered
machine that uses an electric motor for the blades rotation

Figure 2: A SPINING MOULDING MACHINE

B] A PEELING AND GRINDING MACHINE

Also we did fabrication of a maize peeling and grinding machine which had the size of
120cm*90cm*70cm and it was made from steel material. Approximately two steel sheets and
three v-shape bars of high thickness were used in building up the machines while other parts
like the grinding and peeling wheels were made of materials with greater density so as to
support it function. These machines were made to be using a diesel engine.
Figure 3: A PEELING AMD GRINDING MACHINE

C] CIRCULAR WOOD SAWING MACHINE

This was the last machine we fabricated. It was of size 100cm*80cm*70cm It was made up of
parts like the table, motto, spinning shaft, spinning wheel, wood controller. Parts like the
electric motto, spinning wheel or blade and spinning shaft were bought while the table and
wood controller were fabricated by us and they were fabricated from steel material and about
one steel sheet and two dense V-shape bars were used.

WEEK SEVEN AND EIGHT

These were the last weeks of the program. During these weeks we did absolutely nothing
because it was ghost town. At the end of the ghost town our evaluation forms were handed to
us.

TASK ASSIGN TO ME DURING DAILLY ACTIVITIESS

During this program, I was assign to carry out things like cutting, drilling, welding, filling,
fitting of a motor on a machine. In the first week of the program where we had orientations
and identification of machines I was as to identify a lathe machine and a welding machine and
I was also ask to list the various preventive measures when working in a workshop.

In the second week, this was one of the weeks I was assign allot of work. I was ask to on a
hand cutting machine and cut a metal sheet after observing my supervisor carry out the first
cutting. Also I was asked to drill holes of diameters 10mm, 12mm, and 15mm. Still on this
same week I was ask to observe how a lathe machine was use to perform different lathe
operations and at the end I was ask to perform facing on a shaft and also to thread it.
In the third week where there was allot of fabrication work, during fabrication of each
machine I was assign a task. Like during the fabrication of the wood spinning moulding
machine I was ask to cut the hole on the table that the shaft rotate through also I was asked to
welder some of the parts of the machine like the foots of the machine and the next machine
the maize peeling and grinding machine I was assign to fit the pulley on the shaft and also to
smooth some welded parts by the use of a hand filling machine and a sandpaper.

For all the tasked assign to me I did carried them out and during the process I was corrected
whenever I did something wrong and also I did learn allot of things when I was assign any
task.

WHAT I LEARNED DURING THIS PROGRAM

Talking about what I learned is a very broad aspect because every day I did learn many things
for I will just highlight the most important ones.

 I learned how to carry out different operations on a lathe machine like turning, facing,
drilling etc
 I learned how to feet a drill on a drilling machine and drill a hole
 Also, I learned how to use a cutting machine to perform different cutting operation
 I learned how to use a welding machine to perform welding operation
 I also learned how to mount bearings, feet an electric motto, feet a pulley on a shaft
and so on.
 Finally I learned how to design and fabricate a wood spinning moulding machine, a
maize peeling and grinding machine, and a circular wood sawing machine.

Apart from the above mentioned, I also did allot of maintenances. In the process I thought of
ideas that can be use for better maintenance and fabrication of some machine parts.
CHATER THREE
THE SWOT ANALYSIS OF LAHMOYECH
STRENGHT OF LAHMOTECH
Strength is a positive characteristic that gives a company an important capacity and a leading
edge over the other companies. As far as LAHMOTECH is concerned its strengths include
the following:

 Training of interns
 Training of apprentice
 Provision of maintenance services to the community
 Production of machines like maize peeling and grinding machine, wood sawing and
moulding machine for home market.

THE WEAKNESSES OF LAHNOTECH

A “weakness” is a characteristic that puts a company at a disadvantage. The weaknesses of
LAHMOTECH are;

 Insufficient vehicles to transport finished products to the market.

 Insufficient staff in relation to the job to be done.
 Inadequate infrastructure to accommodate the various services of the organisation.
 Uncertainty about how the company while be in the future due to less data
collection about the growth of the organisation.
 Lack of good, well trained and experience engineers and employees
 Insufficient material availability.

OPORTUNITIES OF LAHMOTECH
 Ready market for the organisation to sell it products in the towns of Bamenda and the
hinterlands
 Availability of cheap labour: Availability of cheap labour promotes the growth of the
business since less income is use for wages.
 Availability of power: The workshop of the organisation is at food market Bamenda
where there is available power.
 Enjoy economics of scale: Their ability to reinvest profit has lead to the extension of
the business giving rise to branches in other areas like Batibo, Bali and mile four
Nkwen

THE THREATS OF LAHMOTECH

A “threat” is a characteristic of the external environment which is hostile to the organisation.
These threats include;

 Entry of high cost foreign competitors such as importation of high technology

machines from foreign countries at higher prices
 Fluctuating climatic conditions
 Possibilities of hazards like fire outbreak
 High taxes may lead to the collapse of the organisation
 Socio political crisis in the Cameroon has let to less supply of goods by
LAHMOTECH due to the numerous ghost towns.

Electricity failure is a very high risk to the organisation since most of its activities depend on
electricity.

DIFFICULTIES FACE BY INTERNS

During the internship, the intern encountered the following problems or difficulties;

 The unwillingness to disclose information by some staffs was a hindrance.

 It was during the rainy season, so it was always difficult for me to get to work due to
bad roads Also there were limited staffs or personnel.
 The infrastructure is limited causing some services to be left out or compounded.
 Also, the break period of workers is not respected since sometimes there is too much
work as such the interns are held back to work during break and even beyond closing
hours.
 There were difficulties to match theory with practice because most concepts in theory
does not match with practice such as, functioning of moveable systems.
 The time given to me to carry out my internship was limited.
 Time constraint. The one month set out for the internship was too small. This made it
difficult for one to blend theory and practice

RECOMENDATIONS
TO LAHMOTECH
The following are some recommendation I will give to the general manager of
LAHMOTECH VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTER

 The manager should employ more personnel’s so as to meet the needs of the
customers at their respective times
 LAHMOTECH should have standby power supplies that can be use in times of power
shortages
 The manager should create more branches in other regions of the country
 The manager should be willing to receive many interns during internship programs
and try to create partnership with the school so as to train the interns during the
internship program
 The manager should also create programs that can be use to advertise the products of
the company
 The manager should always give gift to the interns so as to motivate the interns
 Also, the manager should always grand opportunities to frequent customers for
advertisement.

TO NAHPI BAMENDA
 The school should create partnership with LAHMOTECH so that students from
NAHPI under the department MECHANICAL ENGINEERING can always carry out
their internship program there
 The school should always go to the various companies chosen by the students to make
sure they carry out the program properly
 The school should provide orientation classes to tell the students what internship
means and what they are to do at the internship ground.
 The school should keep records of past reports so as to detect those escaping to carry
on the program and want to cause plagiarism.

CONCLUSION
I will conclude by saying this internship program is a very nice program because it is aimed at
increasing the professional skills of an intern and it should be promoted by increasing the
length or period use for the program so that interns would really master their profession very
well so as to serve their purpose in the society as professionals.
