1. Time Frame: 600 minutes

2. RUA:
a. Compare the relative wavelengths of different forms of electromagnetic waves
b. Cite examples of practical applications of the different regions of EM waves, such as the use of radio waves in
telecommunications
c. Identify ways in which the properties of mirrors and lenses determine their use in optical instruments (e.g., cameras and
binoculars)
3. Context
● The students will explain the different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

● The students will define the images formed by the different types of mirrors and lenses.

4. Overview of the Lesson

The discovery that changing magnetic fields produce electric fields and changing electric fields produce magnetic fields led to a
better understanding of the nature, propagation, and production of electromagnetic waves. Light, a form of electromagnetic wave,
behaves in different ways when it interacts with matter. The reflection and refraction of light and the image formation in the human
eye and optical instruments are best explained through rays.

III. Student’s Experiential Learning

Chunk #1: Electromagnetic Spectrum
Formative Question/s: What are the different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum?
Discussion Proper:
Electromagnetic energy travels in waves and spans a broad spectrum from very long radio waves to very short gamma
rays. The human eye can only detect only a small portion of this spectrum called visible light. A radio detects a different portion
of the spectrum, and an x-ray machine uses yet another portion.
● Electromagnetic waves transmit energy.
● A trough is the lowest point of a wave and a crest is the highest point.
● Near infrared waves are used in remote controls.
● Far infrared waves are radiant heat.
● Gamma rays have the greatest energy.

Activity: Image analysis of EM spectrum

Chunk #2: Light

Formative Question/s: What are the images formed by the different types of mirrors and lenses?
Discussion Proper:
Reflection is the act of light reflecting back when it hits a medium on a plane. Refraction is the process by which light shifts its
path as it travels through a material, causing the light to bend. Thus, this is the key difference between reflection and refraction. This
phenomenon usually occurs in mirrors.
● Reflection
● Refraction
● Mirrors
Activity: Guided discussion and demonstration, Sample Problems

IV. RUA of Student’s Learning

The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
● the relative wavelengths of different forms of electromagnetic waves

● the different regions of EM waves, such as the use of radio waves in telecommunications

● the properties of mirrors and lenses determine their use in optical instruments (e.g., cameras and binoculars)

V. Post- Lesson Remediation Activity

The learners should be able create an infographics about the effects of radiation in the body. This will be graded according to;
Content, Creativity, Practical, Mechanics and Visual Appeal.
