Problem Set 02
Date: 31 July, 2023.

This is to be submitted not later than 2pm on 2-8-2023.

1. Discuss about the continuous charge distribution and what are the equation of electric
field for continuous charge distribution.
2. (a) Find the electric field a distance Z above one end of a straight line segment of
length L as shown in following figure.

(b) Find the electric field a distance Z above the centre of a square loop ( side a)
carrying uniform line charge λ as following figure,

(c) Find the electric field a distance Z above the centre of a circular loop of radius r as
shown in following figure.
3. Suppose the electric field in some region is found to be 𝐸⃗ = 𝑘𝑟 3 𝑟̂ , in the spherical
coordinates ( k is some constant).
(a) Find the charge density ρ.
(b) Find the total charge contained in a sphere of radius R, centred at the origin.
4. One of these is an impossible electrostatic field. Which one?

(a) 𝐸⃗ = 𝑘[𝑥𝑦𝑥̂ + 2𝑦𝑧𝑦̂ + 3𝑥𝑧𝑧̂ ]

(b) 𝐸⃗ = 𝑘[𝑦 2 𝑥̂ + (2𝑥𝑦 + 𝑧 2 )𝑦̂ + 2𝑦𝑧𝑧̂ ]

5. A line charge λ is glued onto the rim of a wheel of radius b, which is then suspended
horizontally, as shown in following figure, so that it is free to rotate. In the central
region, out to radius a, there is a uniform magnetic field B0, pointing up. Now someone
turns the field off. What happens?
6. Imagine a uniform magnetic field, pointing in the z-direction and filling all space
(𝐵 = 𝐵0 𝑧̂ ). A positive charge is at rest, at the origin. Now somebody turns off the
magnetic field, thereby inducing an electric field. In what direction does the charge
move?
7. Find the amplitude of the displacement current density:
(a) adjacent to an automobile antenna where the magnetic field intensity of an FM signal
is
𝐻𝑥 = 0.15 cos[3.12(3𝑥108 𝑡 − 𝑦)]𝐴/𝑚
(b) in the air space at a point within a large power distribution transformer where
𝐵𝑦 = 0.8 cos[1.25 𝑥 106 (3𝑥108 𝑡 − 𝑦)]𝑦̂ 𝑇

(c) within a large oil filled power capacitor where 𝜀𝑟 = 5 , 𝜀0 = 8.854 𝑥 10−12

(d) In a metallic conductor at 60Hz if 𝜀 = 𝜀0 , 𝜇 = 𝜇0 and σ = 5.8 x 107 s/m and
𝐽 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛 (377𝑡𝑥108 𝑡 − 117.1𝑧)𝑥̂

8. Let μ=10-5 H/m , ε = 4 x 10-4 F/m, σ = 0 and 𝜌𝑣 = 0 . Find k ( including units ) so that
each of the following pairs of fields satisfies Maxwell Equation.

9. An alternating current I = I0 cos (ωt) flows down a long straight wire, and returns
along coaxial conducting tube of radius a. The electric field by which is
𝜇0 𝐼0 𝜔 𝑎
𝑬(𝑠, 𝑡) = sin(𝜔𝑡)𝑙𝑛 ( ) 𝑧̂
2𝜋 𝑠
(a) Find displacement current density Jd.
(b) Integrate it to get the total displacement current, 𝐼𝑑 = ∫ 𝐽𝑑 . 𝑑𝑎
10. (a) What are the six product rules?
(b) Explain about the Fundamental Theorem for (i) Calculus, (ii) Gradients,
(iii) Divergences and (iv) Curls.
