TEACHER’S NOTES and answers
Intermediate ESL students find Idioms and phrasal verbs
challenging. To get a high level in IELTS students are required to be
able to use some idiomatic language appropriately.

This activity can be used in a number of ways:

• As a whole class activity projected on the board you can teach or
review the 25 phrasal verbs and give examples

• Groups of students working together – perhaps test each other

• As a homework task with the role play being done in class in the
next lesson

Exactly how you use this resource will depend on your students
needs and time you have available.

Before doing Activity 1 remind students that they will need to use a
range of verb forms/tenses. You can also use this as a teaching point
or as a diagnostic tool to determine which tenses you need to review
in another lesson

competition if you like have a prize for the pair with the most
phrasal verbs (used appropriately) in their dialogues.

2. Students may be able to think of their own situations but if they

need some help, you could provide them with this list of
suggestions or allocate a suggested scenario to each pair.

Suggestions for dialogues:

Two friends making plans for a night out

Two colleagues discussing a project they are working on.

A parent talking to his/her teenage son/daughter about expectations

of their behaviour.
