1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Summary

1.1.1 Scope of Specification

This specification provides structural data for the design of mechanical


equipment, and defines structural related requirements that the
equipment Supplier shall be expected to furnish as part of the Supplier
data submitted. Wherever this specification differs from the referenced
codes, standards, or specifications, this specification shall govern. For
specialty equipment that are governed by a nationally recognized
industrial code, such as the Cooling Water Institute for cooling towers,
that code may be used in lieu of this specification if specifically allowed by
the contract or purchase order.

1.1.2 Work Not Included

This section not used.

1.1.3 Provided by Supplier

The following information shall be included by Supplier on drawings or


other documents submitted for review:

a. Rotating and reciprocating machinery weighing 5,000 pounds or


less.

1. Outline drawing of the machine assembly with dimensions


of skid or mounting plates, and with the location and size
of anchor bolts. Required grip for anchor bolts shall be
clearly noted.

2. The weight of the total machine assembly and its center of


gravity or individual component weights (such as drivers,
skid, machine) and locations such that the center of gravity
may be calculated.

3. A plan showing location and size of base components


requiring grout support. For skid mounted machinery,
requirements for filling skid with grout and location and
size of grout holes.

4. Driver type, horsepower, and operating speed(s).

5. Machinery Supplier foundation recommendations, such as


anchor bolt post tension stress, type of grout, and
foundation layout (plan dimensions and elevations).

6. Maximum temperature of machine assembly at grout


contact points.

7. Platform, stair, and ladder layout locations, with


attachment details.

8. When requested by the Purchase Order, a complete load


analysis for Dead, Live, Thermal, Wind, Earthquake, etc.,
loads and foundation reactions summarized per Table 1,
Attachment 01.

b. Rotating machinery weighing more than 5,000 pounds.

1. Information listed in Section 1.1.3.a., of this specification.

2. Weight of machine rotor components and the center of


gravity of each. Dynamic imbalance force either from the
maximum permitted manufacturing tolerances or from the
maximum unbalanced forces expected from normal wear
between scheduled maintenance.

3. Sort-circuit load if motor-driven.

4. Location of rotor bearings.

5. Equivalent static load at each bolt corresponding to peak


machine loads.

6. For turbo generators, condenser flange / vacuum load.

7. Design start-up and operating torque load.

8. Vertical and horizontal impact loads.

9. Machine thermal expansion force.

10. Turbine accident load due to bowed rotor, bucket break, or


valve tripping.

11. Mass moment of inertia of the total machine about the CG


(Center of Gravity) of the machine or sufficient data on
individual components and their CGs to calculate the mass
moment of inertia about 3 axes.

12. Required anchor bolt post tension stress, if required.

13. Vibration trip set points.

14. Gear box ratios.

c. Reciprocating machinery weighing more than 5,000 pounds.

holes.

2. Weight of each bundle.

3. Empty weight and CG location of bundle and shell.

4. Weight of bundle and shell full of water.

e. Air-cooled heat exchangers, heaters, boilers, spheres, and


miscellaneous equipment

Attachment 01.

4. Thermal expansion movement at each support and the


shell temperature for horizontal vessels, heaters, and
boilers.

6. 1997 UBC Earthquake loads apply to Strength Design for


steel and concrete. To use Working Stress Design
(Allowable Stress Design) for steel or anchorage, divide
the earthquake loads by 1.4.

c. Tanks shall be designed per 1998 API Standard 650 Appendix E


modified to use 1997 UBC Seismic Criteria. Seller shall provide
any free board required to preventing overflow and damage to the
roof and upper shell that may be caused by sloshing of liquid

2.1.5 Thermal Loads

a. Thermal loads and displacements caused by operating conditions


shall be based on the design temperature of the equipment rather
than the operating temperature.

b. Ambient temperature ranges from a maximum of 100 degrees F


to a minimum of 60 degrees F.

2.2 Load Combinations

2.2.2 Every portion of a structure shall be designed to resist the following load
combinations:

a. Dead load consisting of the weight of the equipment including all


attachments and internals.

b. Operating load (consisting of the dead load and the operating


liquid weight), design live loads, impact forces, vibration forces,
thermal forces, and maintenance loads.

c. Hydrotest load (consisting of the dead load and the weight of


water necessary to hydrotest the equipment), design live load,
and with and without 25% wind.

d. Dead load and either wind or earthquake load, whichever


governs.

e. Operating load, live load, and either wind or earthquake load,


whichever governs.

2.3 Structural Steel

2.3.1 Codes: AISC.

2.3.2 Material: ASTM A36

2.3.3 For surface preparation, priming, and painting, refer to Project


Specification SP-421300-80-2.

2.3.4 For galvanizing see Project Specification SP-421300-80-7.

2.3.5 All welding shall be in accordance with AWS D1.1.

2.3.6 Stairs, platforms, and ladders shall be designed in accordance with


Project Drawings 6S-6885, 6S-6886, 6S-7258 and 6S-7259.

2.3.7 Platform or walkway flooring shall be provided as indicated below:

a. 1-1/4 inch by 3/16 inch galvanized serrated welded bar grating

b. 1/4 inch checkered plate to be used only for special cases as


approved by the purchase order or contract

2.3.8 Minimum headroom over platforms, walkways, and stairways shall be 7'-
6" to the lowest point of any overhead obstruction.

2.3.9 The weight of removable flooring sections shall not exceed 150 pounds.

2.4 Anchor Bolts

Anchor bolts shall be galvanized headed type, designed for an allowable tension
stress of 20,000 psi and an allowable shear stress of 11,000 psi. Allowable
tension and shear may be increased 1/3 when considering wind or earthquake
loads. Also refer to Section 2.1.4.b.6.
