Kinetics of Particles: Newton’s

Second Law of Motion

Kinetics of Rectilinear Motion
Kinetics – is used to relate the force acting on
a body to its mass and acceleration. When
acceleration of a body caused by the forces
acting on it has been determined, the
principles of kinematics may be now be
applied to determine the displacement or
velocity at any instant.
Newton’s Second Law of Motion for a Particle

A particle acted upon by an unbalanced force

system has an acceleration which is directly
proportional to the resultant of the force
system.

F = ma
D’Alembert’s Principle

"When the body is subjected to an acceleration,

there exists a force opposite the direction of the
motion and equal to the product of mass and
acceleration"

D’Alembert’s Principle

The force mentioned in D'Alembert's principle is

known as the reverse effective force.

The reverse effective force is equal to the product

of mass and acceleration.

An elevator weighing 15 kN starts from rest
and an upward velocity of 3 m/sec. in a
distance of '6 m. If the acceleration is
constant, what is the tension in the cable?
A man weighing 70 kg. is in an elevator
moving upward with an acceleration of 2.5
m/sec².

1. What pressure does he exert on the floor

of the elevator?
2. What will be the pressure if the elevator is
descending down with the same
acceleration?
Dynamic Equilibrium
Dynamic Equilibrium
Dynamic equilibrium is a state where bodies are moving at a constant
velocity (rectilinear motion).
The 6800 kg helicopter takes off from rest. Its rotor exerts a
constant vertical thrust of 88000 N.
1.What is acceleration?
2.How high does it rise in 2 seconds?
3.If the 6800 kg helicopter is at rest at t = 0, the pilot
advances the throttle so that the vertical thrust exerted by
the helicopter rotor as a function of time T = 16000t in (N),
what is the helicopters velocity at t = 6 sec.
Block A having a mass of 15 kg is placed on top of block B
having a mass of 30 kg on a horizontal surface. The coefficients
of friction between all the surfaces are μs = 0.40 and Hk=0.35.
1. If a horizontal force F is applied at block B, what is the
largest force F that can be applied without causing A to slip
relative to B?
2. What is the resulting acceleration?
3. After how many seconds will it take for the blocks to move
a distance of 2 m. after the application of F.
A 100 lb. crate is initially stationary and is placed along an
inclined planed making an angle of 30' with the horizontal. The
coefficients of friction between the crate and the inclined
surface are µs = 0.2 and μk=0.16
1. If a horizontal force of 90 lb. is applied at the crate,
determine how far the crate moves from its initial position
in 2 sec.
2. What is the acceleration of the block?
3. If the horizontal force applied to the crate is only 30 lb.,
how far will the crate moves from its initial position in 2
sec?
