This book is a quick guide that introduces the reader to the
Hindi language right from its core.
The first section of this book sets forth the story of Heather
and Mark and how Hindi played a crucial role in their life.
The second section takes us through the language from the
basic syllables to over five hundred vocabulary words and
phrases!
Reading this book will enable novice English speakers to
learn and speak Hindi effectively and on the go!

INTRODUCTION
Every civilization has had its journey in time which has left
its mark on the civilization in the form of culture, traditions,
and values. These civilizations, in today’s era, collectively
form the core fabric of a society in a country.
One such country is India. And there is one tool that will help
you understand and communicate with the people of India.
That tool is their language, Hindi, which you can learn with
the help of this book.
Hindi is the widely spoken language across India.
This book is an easy-to-use guide that introduces the reader
to more than five hundred common Hindi vocabulary and
useful phrases for beginner English speakers who want to
learn and speak Hindi.
This book will be tremendously helpful for the following:

PART 1: LOVE <> LANGUAGE
Purpose.
A word that has been haunting me since my teenage years. As
far as I remember, I have always been a restless girl engaged
in the quest to find the reason for my existence on this
planet.
Career.
A mainstream career never gave me the sense of
belongingness experienced by many others as their real
purpose in life. My heart always wandered in search of that
one true purpose with which I can truly relate. I have always
been on the lookout for my raison d'être.
The last couple of years had nothing but been short of havoc,
and my relationship with Mark took that toll.
Mark had been the anchor of my life, the solid pillar bringing
so much joy, love, and care into my otherwise one-
dimensional life. But he never approved of my work as a
climate change activist. I had been torn between Mark and
my work, as he wanted me to quit my responsibilities as a
climate change activist.
Eventually, it happened! Mark and I decided to go our
separate ways, as love is a subset of happiness, and if I was
not happy myself, how could I keep Mark happy?
Looking back now, sitting in this coffee shop at the airport
sipping my Americano, I feel satisfied with my decision. I am
about to embark on my journey to find true happiness by
following my heart - my first big and international project to
Ho Chi Minh City. Several activists from around the Globe
were called upon for this project aimed towards cleaning
River Saigon, which has been polluted heavily. I was going to
work on this project to be part of the team cleaning the river.
The Project was backed up and funded by UNESCO.
As a toast to my new beginnings, I lifted my coffee cup, and
then something surreal happened. Across the steam of my
piping hot Americano, I saw Mark coming with a pretty girl.
Momentarily, it all appeared to me as a mirage in the desert.
But he was there for real. We both exchanged glances. He
came over and asked about my well-being, and I replied
respectfully. Then he introduced me to his new Swedish
girlfriend, Astrid.
He told me about how he had been on a vacation to meet
Astrid’s folks. I guess things were going strong and steady
between him and Astrid. Then he enquired about my work. I
told him about my new project. He then asked me to stay in
touch. I nodded in a polite affirmation, took their respected
leave, and walked towards my terminal. And that was it.
I was feeling a cold heaviness in my heart, thinking that, at
last, Mark was able to find his dream girl. I dared to turn
around, and to my shock, Mark was still looking at me while
his new girlfriend was busy skimming through the menu. I
solemnly turned my back on the past and moved toward my
glorious future.
I boarded my flight to Ho Chi Minh City. It had two layovers.
The first was in Frankfurt, and the second one was in
Singapore. I don’t know when I fell asleep, but I woke up as
we landed at the Frankfurt Airport. I did some window
shopping at the Frankfurt Airport and tried a few local
delicacies. After about two hours of layover, my flight
resumed its journey and I fell asleep again.
After another few hours, I was suddenly awakened by an
inflight announcement. The message from the captain was
loud and clear: “Due to engine failure, we are about to make
an emergency landing….”
The first thought that crossed my mind was, “Oh my God!!! I
do not want to die so young!” Many other questions starting
with, “Now who will do…” started popping into my head. I
thought about my projects, ambitions, and aspirations.
The plane was flying over the central part of India as it
descended and that’s when the inevitable happened. It crash-
landed in a dense forest. I was extremely grateful as the
aircraft came to a halt intact in one piece, and luckily, with no
human casualties.
Soon we were rescued by a group of local people from the
nearby villages. They took us to their place and provided first
aid, food, and shelter. They didn’t know English and were
communicating in Hindi, the language of India.
As my cabin bag was with me, I switched my mobile phone
on. I don’t know what struck me at that instant, but I
immediately sent an SMS to Mark telling him about my
situation. In the meantime, I tried communicating with the
local people using standard gestures. After a while, I got a call
from Mark. I explained to him the situation I was in while
panicking. He calmed me down and told me not to worry.
Then he asked me about my location. All I could tell him was
that I was in some part of Central India, in the state of M.P.,
but the exact name was something I could not pronounce as
it was in Hindi. He assured me that he was going to do
something and asked me not to worry at all. After calming me
down, he hung up the call.
I was experiencing an excruciating headache, and with every
passing second, it was becoming difficult for me to
communicate with the locals.
Suddenly, I received a WhatsApp message from Mark. It had
a link to Amazon.com. That link had a Hindi book by Shuk
Institute called “Hindi for Beginners and Travelers: An
Aggregated Guide for English Speakers Who Want to Learn
Hindi On-The-Go!”
I immediately downloaded the book, hoping to learn some
basic gestures and phrases, and rushed to the Index. It had
two parts:

Part 2: Learn <> Language had many chapters.
Opening this part, I quickly went to Chapter Eight: Body,
Health, and Ailments, and in the 'Ailments' table, I searched
for headache, and the translation for headache was there –
‘sar dard.’ I immediately uttered “sar dard.” with my
broken Hindi accent. The people started responding to my
headache issue and immediately asked someone in the house
to prepare “Chai” for me. I searched and saw the ‘Drinks’
heading was on Chapter 5. I went to Chapter 5 of the book
and was able to find the word Chai in no time. Chai means
tea.
I was satisfied and even felt a little at peace that, at least,
things were getting a bit settled. I had Chai and was now
feeling at ease. A few minutes later, the police arrived, and
one of the police officers could speak English. He told me I
should not worry, as I was at the village chief’s house. They
had my preliminary medical examination taken by a team of
doctors. The American Embassy was informed about me. I
also received a call from the Embassy later, and they
promised me all the help, Thereafter, the team of paramedics
took me to a government hospital in a nearby town along
with the other passengers on the flight.
After a thorough examination, I was kept under observation
for the next 24 hours as a precaution for my headache and
dehydration. After my stay in the hospital, they sent me to a
nearby city ‘Indore,’ with other passengers. From Indore, we
flew to the American Embassy in New Delhi for further
official formalities. The Embassy offered me another flight
back to New York or my original destination Ho Chi Minh
City, but something prevented me from deciding on the spot.
I requested the official to give me two days to decide.
My stay was arranged in a hotel called The Ashok, near the
Embassy. After a hot shower, as I was sitting on my bed, I
instinctively began to go through the Hindi book by Shuk
Institute on my phone again! It was the first time I was going
through the book uninterrupted and relaxed. As I went
through it, my eyes got stuck on the quote at the start of the
book, which says, "to speak a language is to take on a world, a
culture," by Frantz Fanon.
I began reading it further, things started becoming clearer,
and the aroma and flavorful taste of Chai began to re-appear
in my mind again and again. Oh yes, that is it! It was the taste
that prevented me from wanting to go so soon. The flavor of
Chai has become a kind of totem for me to discover this
country called India and to rediscover myself.
Now, I was at peace as my heart knew what it wanted.
Feeling cozy in the feeling, I fell asleep.
The next day, I requested the Embassy to provide me with a
flight ticket to Ho Chi Minh City, dated three weeks away. I
wanted to stay in India for a few more days. I then called my
project coordinator in Ho Chi Minh City and informed him I
would not be able to arrive till three weeks later and told him
why.
Thus, I began my journey around India with the Hindi book
as my sole companion, guide, and beacon light!
My journey started from the totem itself! The Chai. I went to
a small tea shop. I opened Chapter 21 of the book and
ordered Chai and a local delicacy Samosa (an Indian
savoury snack with potato filling) that was new to me. I
thoroughly enjoyed it. Then I dived into the book again, and
this time, I ordered Kachori (an Indian savoury snack with
spicy-pulses-filling). I could not believe how interesting this
entire exercise had begun to appear. While enjoying the
dishes, I noticed a young boy was looking at me while I was
sitting. I quickly turned to Chapter 2 and found out the
proper way to ask for his name. I quickly found what I
needed and said, “Aapka naam kya hai?” (What is your
name?) He was pleasantly surprised to hear me speaking
Hindi. He told me his name was Mukesh. Then he asked my
name, and I replied with, “Mera Naam Heather hai!”
(My name is Heather!). He continued by asking, “Aap
kahaan se hain?” (Where are you from?). After hearing
that, I told him, “Main America se hoon.” (I am from
America.). On hearing this, his eyes grew wide, and he
uttered, “America!” I nodded in affirmation.
That night, when I returned to my hotel, I received a
WhatsApp message from Mark, who asked me when my
flight to Ho Chi Minh City was. I replied and told him after
three weeks. On reading this, he quickly called me. I
answered his call and told him I had planned to stay in India
for a while. He was surprised by my decision but supported
me, nevertheless. I thanked him for the Hindi book, and after
talking for a while, he told me that he had a meeting coming
up, so we got off the phone.
I continued reading the book and planned my next day’s
adventure with an aim to explore new things!
The next day, I decided to visit a local zoo.
I stopped an autorickshaw. I asked the driver confidently,
“Bhaiya Zoo chaloge?” (Brother, will you take me to the
Zoo?), courtesy of the book. He said, “Haan!” (Yes!). I
quickly hopped into the autorickshaw. After reaching the
Zoo, I asked the driver, “Kitna hua Bhaiya?” (Brother,
how much is the fare?). He said, “Sau” (Hundred). I handed
him the money and went to the zoo.
That night, Mark called again, and this time we spoke for
almost two hours. I told him about my entire plans for the
next day. He said he was pleasantly surprised to see this fun-
loving and explorer side of my persona. I liked Mark’s light
and casual talk too. I, too, was rediscovering him. When we
were in a relationship, he was too serious and had anger
issues.
Among all the other talks, Mark told me his marriage date
with Astrid on the 25th of next month. I congratulated him
and dropped the call. Next month is April. Thinking this, I
slowly opened the Hindi book and read through the chapter
for months. To my surprise, the Hindi pronunciation bore
quite a resemblance to the English pronunciations.
The next day, I woke up early in the morning and went to
explore the streets, shops, and Places of Worship nearby.
At night after returning to my hotel, I got a call from Mark
which I didn’t answer. I decided to stop all communications
with him as he was now getting married, and it did not feel
right for me to keep in contact. After all, him and I have two
different paths.
Before I slept, I read the chapter on love, marriage, and
divorce from the Hindi book. I remember that day being the
21st of March. It had been nine days now since I spoke or
responded to Mark. It had also been five days since Mark's
last messaged me!
I was all shattered inside! What has started to happen to me?
I should discover the fragrance of this new culture called
India, but I was sitting alone in my hotel room. I always had
control over my emotions. I did not cry even when Mark and
I broke up. Instead, I felt relieved at that moment. My career,
freedom, and individuality were everything that mattered to
me. The sky was the limit. I was flying high in my hopes and
aspirations. How come I fell from that high sky and crash-
landed on this unknown territory? What happened suddenly?
The grief was crushing me. I was crying. My heart was
longing for Mark. I always loved him, and I still love him. I
cannot deny this fact any further. I have been just running
away from this truth for the last two years.
I was holding my phone in my hand and was crying
profusely. In a sudden surge of desperation, my fingers
frantically started scrolling down the call register of my
phone, and there he was! Mark Davis! I was about to dial
him, but suddenly the thought of Astrid punched straight in
my face, throwing me into a mental blackout.
I stopped myself from dialing him. I have no right to barge
into the love life of two individuals only to fulfil my selfish
motive of love. Eventually, it all became too much for me to
handle, and I cried myself to sleep.
After about three hours, the slumber washed off, and I woke
up. it was quarter past eleven. I decided to go out. After
getting ready, I walked downstairs and got myself a cup of
Chai and a sandwich. In no time, I was munching my
sandwich and enjoying the Chai while reading through the
Hindi book. Then across the glass wall at the reception desk,
I saw something or someone hard to believe. There he was!
Mark Davis, with his regular shoulder bag, talking to the
receptionist!
Believe me! It was the ultimate shock of my life. Far more
extensive even compared to the recent plane crash that I
survived. How come this man is here? I was shocked and
euphoric. It took a few moments for me to gather the reality.
I was in a quandary, the stickiest one that I have ever faced in
my life. There is this man for whom I have been severely
longing, and then there is Astrid, whose marriage plans are
laid out. The preparations must be going on full-fledged.
Guest lists, venue, wedding rings, wedding cake, and above
all, the wedding dress; everything might even be finalized by
now. Then, I began to doubt my optimism. Maybe Mark has
come to India on a business trip and just stopped by to see
how I am doing. Maybe just a courtesy visit. Oh yes, I think
this is the reason why he is here. Feeling at ease, I decided to
meet him. I got up from my table and walked towards him to
greet him. I was about to reach the reception, and at that
exact moment, Holy Mother of Christ, I do not know from
where this thought came and hijacked my mind – What if
Mark is here to express his love to me? And bang!!! In a jiffy,
the optimism was back, and I swiftly turned my direction at
the last second.
Eyes! But these eyes. What do I do to them? They always
bring me trouble. My eyes got locked with the receptionist's
and despite me changing direction, the receptionist asked in
her sweet voice, “Hi, Madam, what can I do for you?”
Without turning towards them, I just waved my hand
negatively and said, “No, no! nothing,” and continued
walking towards the main exit.
It wasn’t of any use. He saw me. I heard that familiar manly
voice of Mark calling my name, “Heather! Heather!” I
continued walking while ignoring him, pretending like I
didn’t hear anything!
He continued to call my name a few more times, but I
ignored it all. I kept walking swiftly and came out of the
hotel. Then I headed towards an autorickshaw, walking so
fast that I was practically running. I sat in the autorickshaw.
The driver asked, “Kahan chalna hai Madamji”
(Madam, where do you want to go?). In tension, I replied
Chandni chowk. And the autorickshaw zoomed forward. I
turned and looked behind. I couldn’t believe it; Mark was
boarding an autorickshaw and coming after me. Then my
phone began to ring. It was Mark, but I cut the call. He called
me one more and I hung up the call once more. My plan was
simple. I was to head to Chandni chowk, walk to the nearby
Lal qila metro station, get on a train to my hotel to pick up
my things, and check out. Now, I need to get rid of Mark by
leading him astray in a maze of alleys of Chandni chowk
market, which I knew better than him, and running away
from there.
The autorickshaw stopped at the autorickshaw stand
opposite the Lal qila (Red Fort). I quickly got off and started
walking swiftly on the main shopping street. My heart was
thumping at its maximum. I just kept going. Then, I turned
and looked back. Oh, My God! I could not believe my eyes;
Mark was following me. Without thinking anything further, I
entered a shopping lane called Gali Khajanchi. There were
many jewelry shops. I would have enjoyed looking at the
contemporary designs, but at this moment, I was in a state of
urgency. I moved right, left, right. This lane from here, that
lane from there. I was somewhat relieved that, at least, I
confused Mark in this maze of streets having so many similar
shops. Luckily, I happen to come out to the Main Street
again. I continued moving and looked back. But curse my
luck. Mark was still following me. In frustration, I entered a
different shopping lane again.
After some time, I finally got rid of Mark. Then, I rushed to
the metro station.
I was at the platform waiting for a train to arrive, but instead
of the train, Mark appeared. Now, I had nowhere to run as I
was exhausted. He, too, seemed tired as he walked towards
me gazing deeply into my eyes. As he came near. I also
started, drowning deep in his gaze.
“What was all that about, Heather? Why?”
I kept mum. I didn’t have anything to explain my behavior.
"You stopped taking my calls and responding to my
messages, and today, you made me explore the whole of
Delhi in such a short span, making me run a marathon
following you," he said.
Hearing this, I could not control myself and burst into
laughter. I was laughing but had tears in my eyes, and then
my laughter vanished, and that is when I realized I was
crying.
Mark put his arm on my shoulders, turned me in, and said,
“please, relax!”
I tried hard to control my emotions.
I ultimately succumbed and told him the profound truths of
my heart, "I do not want to snatch you away from Astrid."
Mark responded in frustration and said, “Goddamn it! This is
typical saviour syndrome."
He coaxed me further, and said, “When will people come out
of their dream world and face the real world? Like, come on!
Give me a break! I am a human being, for God’s sake! Please
let me decide who I want to be with."
He continued, "Why do you want to force your judgments on
me based on your silly assumptions? I am not a trophy, and
this is not a match between you and Astrid. Astrid is a nice
girl, but when you stopped communicating with me, my
world turned upside down. Seeing my state, Astrid asked me
what was going on. She kept asking if everything was fine
with me, and I could not lie to her. I blurted out that I have
feelings for you and not her."
I responded and asked, "Really?" in excitement and a little
guilt (but more excitement).
Mark replied and said, “Yes! Initially, she was upset and left
my apartment in anger, yelling, and cursing both you and me
but then after a day, she called me and asked to meet at a
restaurant. I showed up, and she was waiting for me. She
returned my engagement ring and took back the ring she had
given me. Then she told me she was thankful to me for letting
her know the truth. She told me that next time, before
proceeding in a relationship, to be sure of myself, and then
she slapped me so tight that I got a sprain in my neck.
“That is why I am wearing this neck collar band.”
“She walked away, and I was left sitting there embarrassed
because everyone was looking at me!”
I just kept on staring at Mark without uttering a word. Mark
was also calmly looking at me. Then, I could not hold my
feelings and embraced him. Mark reciprocated lovingly.
Before we knew it, we were in each other's arms. It was so
magical! I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would
get my love back in a foreign land. To whom should I thank?
To The plane crash, To Chai whose flavor caught hold of me,
to the people and culture of this country, or to the Hindi
book.
We both came out of the metro station. How funny is it that I
ran away from my love, my destiny, for a while, only for it to
come back running to me.
Life is so strange. When Mark was with me in the US, I never
understood what he meant to me. I had to literally fall from
the sky and run into a foreign land to realize what true love
means!
In the end, we both decided to roam in the Chandni chowk
market, but we were both so hungry. We asked a few local
people about restaurant suggestions. They guided us to a lane
by the name of Paranthe Wali Gali. Mark ordered a local
dish in Hindi using the Hindi for Beginners and Travelers
book by Shuk Institute.
Yes, language can create bonds!

This section of the book is a ready reckoner.
Anybody using this section can have almost all the required
and meaningful conversations in Hindi.
The section has twenty-one chapters.
Each chapter addresses an important topic.
There is an essential feature of the Hindi language: Gender
difference.
In many scenarios, there is a difference in how a male and a
female say the same thing.
To acknowledge this differentiation, special care has been
taken in this book to show how a male says certain things,
compared to how a female would say the same thing.

CHAPTER ONE: LETTERS AND
SOUNDS
First things first!
The Hindi language is written in the Devanagari script. It has
13 vowels and 36 consonants. Hindi has another unique thing
to it besides vowels and consonants, called Matra. Matra is
like a thread, which tags along itself with the needle of vowels
and consonants and then weaves the different and vast fabric
of the Hindi language.
This chapter introduces you with Hindi vowels, consonants,
and Matras. The knowledge will help you familiarize yourself
with the Devanagari script.
Hindi and English are the two official languages of the
Government of India.

In the Hindi language, vowels are known as Swar. Below is

Matra
In the Hindi language, Matra is crucial. Once you get the
knack for it, Hindi would become easy to learn.
Matra is the amalgamation of Hindi vowels and consonants.
