OVERVIEW
Call my Bluff is a well known TEFL activity. It can either be used as a fun game at the end of
course or as a way of practising relative clauses. Students try and guess the correct definition of an
unknown word from a choice of three possibilities. In this version of the game, students first write
one of the false definitions of the word before trying to trick other students. The staging of the
activity helps lower level students play the game.

Stage One MODEL THE ACTIVITY

Model the activity for students. Write a word on the board that students won’t know. Then give
three alternate definitions for the word, two false and one true. Ask students to guess which is the
correct definition.

Stage Two COOPERATIVE WRITING

Put students into groups of three. Give each group a worksheet with two new items of vocabulary
on. The worksheets have the correct definition, a false definition and space for them to write
another false defintion. Give students time to look up the words in the dictionary and find the
correct definition. Students must then write another false defintion. Monitior and make sure the
language they are using is appropriate for the level and that they are not copying directly from the
Internet or a dictionary.

Stage Three PROCESS LANGUAGE

Write some process language on the board to help students play the game. Students often need to
hear the definitions two or three times. Useful phrases includes sentences like:

• Can you say that again?

• How do you spell that?
• Can you give me an example sentence?

Drill the sentences so that students are comfortable using them.

Stage Four PLAYING THE GAME

Reorganise the students so students with different words are sitting together. Students take it in
turns to read their words and definitions and the other students must guess the correct option. If they
want, students can have a scoring system. One point for every word they guess correctly and one
point every time they trick a student into guessing the wrong definition.
