ROTATION OF THE EARTH

The Earth is a planet. It is one of the planets in the solar system. It is

the only planet that can sustain life.
The globe represents the Earth. It gives an accurate picture of the
Earth’s surface. It shows the location of places on the smaller scale. When
you turn the globe on its axis, you are actually rotating and spinning it.
The Earth, like the globe, spins or rotates on its axis. This movement is
called rotation. The axis is a fixed line through the center of the Earth from
the North Pole to the South Pole.
You are on Earth, but you cannot feel that the Earth is rotating. This is
because the objects cut in sphere so far away that the Earth does not pass
them as it rotates. You cannot feel the Earth’s rotation because it moves
very smoothly in space.

What You Need to Know?
PERIOD OF THE EARTH’S ROTATION
The Earth rotates on its axis continuously, we cannot tell what we feel
the Earth’s rotation, but it’s actually completes a one whole rotation. The
Earths rotates on its axis in about 24 hours, with respect to the sun but once
every 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 secs with respect to other distant stars.
As the earth rotates, only half of the earth faces the sun at any given time
the half facing the sunlight is day. At the half facing away the sunlight is
night, so that does mean that all places on earth experiences any day and
night.

PERIODS OF THE REVOLUTION OF THE EARTH

As the Earth rotates on its axis, the Earth also travels around the sun in a path
called orbit. The motion around the sun which called a revolution. The amount it takes
for a single trip around the sun is a period of revolution. The period for the Earth to
revolve around the sun is 365 1/4 days. This period defines as a year.
The calendar we presently use; the Gregorian Calendar only uses 365 days. So
to compensate for the excess time to keep the calendar in a syn with a revolution of the
Earth, a leap year is used every four years. A leap year adds one day to the end of
February.

How fast does the Earth travel
around the Sun?
The closest Earth gets to the Sun each year is
at perihelion (147 million km) on about January
3rd and the furthest is at aphelion (152 million
km) on July 4th. Earth’s elliptical orbit has
nothing to do with Earth’s seasons. During
one revolution around the Sun, Earth travels at
an average distance of about 150 million km.
Earth revolves around the Sun at an average
speed of about 27 km (17 mi) per second, but the speed is not constant. The planet
moves slower when it is at aphelion and faster when it is at perihelion.

What causes seasons?

Commonly it is believed that distance of the Earth to the
Sun decides the season or temperature on earth. However it is
not true. Actually axial tilt of the Earth on its axis while revolving
around Sun regulates seasons on planet Earth with one of the
Hemisphere facing away or towards Sun. The reason the Earth
has seasons is that the Earth is tilted ≈23.50 on its axis.

B. The Sun’s gravitational pull
C. The Earth’s spin direction
D. The Earth’s location between other planets
