CONFIGURING DISK AND DEVICE
DRIVER

WEEK 6
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

AT THE END OF THIS LECTURE THE STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

• KNOW THE PATITIONING DISK
• KNOW HOW TO INSTALL AND CONFIGURE DRIVERS
INTRODUCTION TO DEVICE DRIVERS

• Device drivers are specialized software that

allow the operating system to communicate
with hardware devices.

• Each hardware component, such as

printers, graphics cards, and network
adapters, requires a driver to function
properly.
IMPORTANCE:

Without the appropriate drivers, hardware devices may not work correctly or might not be recognized by the
operating system.

Preparation for Installing Device Drivers

• Requirements:

Hardware Device: The physical component that requires the driver.

Driver Software: The specific driver for the hardware, which can often be downloaded from the manufacturer's
website.

Internet Access: For downloading drivers if they are not available on a CD/DVD or USB drive.

Administrator Privileges: Necessary to install software and make changes to system settings.
IMPORTANCE:

3. Locating Device Drivers

Sources:

Manufacturer's Website: The most reliable source for the latest drivers.

Driver CDs/DVDs: Often included with the hardware device.

Windows Update: Sometimes, Windows can automatically find and install the driver.
IMPORTANCE:

Download the driver file to your computer.

Installing Device Drivers in Windows 7

Step-by-Step Installation:

Method 1: Automatic Installation via Device Manager

Open Device Manager:

• Click on the Start menu.

• Type Device Manager in the search box and press Enter.

• Locate the Device:

• Find the device that needs a driver update. It may have a yellow exclamation mark next to it.
IMPORTANCE:

Update Driver:

• Right-click on the device and select Update Driver Software.

• Search Automatically:

• Choose Search automatically for updated driver software. Windows will search online for the latest driver and install
it.

• Method 2: Manual Installation

• Download Driver:

• Download the driver file from the manufacturer’s website.

• Extract the files if they are in a compressed format (e.g., .zip).

• Open Device Manager:

• Click on the Start menu.

IMPORTANCE:

• Type Device Manager in the search box and press Enter.

• Locate the Device:

• Find the device that needs a driver update.

• Update Driver:

• Right-click on the device and select Update Driver Software.

• Browse for Driver Software:

• Select Browse my computer for driver software.

• Click Browse and navigate to the folder where the driver files are located.

• Click Next to start the installation.

IMPORTANCE:

• Type Device Manager in the search box and press Enter.

• Complete Installation:

• Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

• Restart your computer if prompted.

• Method 3: Installation from Executable File

IMPORTANCE:

Download Driver:

• Download the driver file from the manufacturer’s website, typically in the form of an executable file (.exe).

Run Installer:

• Double-click the downloaded file to run the installer.

Follow Instructions:

• Follow the on-screen instructions provided by the installation wizard.

Restart:

• Restart your computer to complete the installation process.

IMPORTANCE:

Troubleshooting Driver Installation Issues

• Common Issues:

Compatibility Problems: Ensure the driver is specifically designed for Windows 7 and your hardware model.

Incomplete Downloads: Verify that the driver file downloaded completely and without errors.

Installation Errors: Run the installer as an administrator by right-clicking the executable and selecting Run as administrator.

Troubleshooting Steps:

• Re-download the Driver: Ensure you have the correct and complete driver file.

• Check for Windows Updates: Sometimes, updates can resolve driver issues.

• Use Compatibility Mode: If the driver is not designed for Windows 7, try running the installer in compatibility mode for an older
version of Windows.

• Contact Support: If issues persist, contact the hardware manufacturer's support team for assistance.
IMPORTANCE:

• Installing device drivers in Windows 7 is a crucial process to ensure that your hardware components function

correctly. By following the outlined steps for locating, downloading, and installing drivers, you can maintain

your system's performance and stability. Always ensure that you are using the correct and latest drivers for

your devices to avoid compatibility issues and enhance functionality.

DISK PARTITIONING

• Disk partitioning is the process of dividing a hard drive into multiple distinct
sections called partitions. Each partition can be used to store different types of
data, run multiple operating systems, or organize files better.
• Importance: Partitioning can improve data organization, enhance system
performance, and facilitate the management of multiple operating systems on
a single disk.
PREPARATION FOR DISK PARTITIONING

• Requirements:
• Administrator Privileges: Necessary to make changes to disk partitions.
• Backup Data: Always back up important data before making changes to avoid potential data loss.
• Disk Management Tool: Windows 10 includes a built-in Disk Management tool for partitioning.
Understanding Disk Management
• Disk Management: A utility included in Windows 10 that allows users to manage disk drives and
partitions. It provides a graphical interface for creating, deleting, and resizing partitions.
STEP-BY-STEP PARTITIONING GUIDE

• Step 1: Access Disk Management

• Open Disk Management:
• Right-click on the Start button (or press Win + X) and select Disk Management from the menu.
• Alternatively, press Win + R to open the Run dialog, type diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
• Step 2: Shrink an Existing Partition
• Select the Drive:

• In the Disk Management window, right-click on the partition you want to shrink (typically the C: drive).

• Shrink Volume:

• Select Shrink Volume from the context menu.

• Windows will calculate the amount of space that can be freed. Enter the amount of space to shrink in
MB and click Shrink.
STEP-BY-STEP PARTITIONING GUIDE

• Step 3: Create a New Partition

• New Unallocated Space:

• After shrinking, you will see unallocated space on the disk.

Create New Volume:

• Right-click on the unallocated space and select New Simple Volume.

New Simple Volume Wizard:

• Click Next to start the New Simple Volume Wizard.

• Specify the size of the new volume and click Next.

• Assign a drive letter or accept the default one and click Next.

• Format the new volume. Choose the file system (usually NTFS), set the allocation unit size (Default), and optionally enter a volume label.

• Check the Perform a quick format option and click Next.

Finish:
STEP-BY-STEP PARTITIONING GUIDE

• Review your settings and click Finish to create the new partition.

Step 4: Verify the New Partition

• Check in Disk Management:

• The new partition should now appear in the Disk Management window, formatted and with a drive
letter assigned.

Check in File Explorer:

• Open File Explorer and verify that the new partition is listed under This PC and is accessible.

• 5. Managing Partitions

• Resize Partitions:

• To extend or shrink a partition, right-click on the desired partition in Disk Management and select
Extend Volume or Shrink Volume as needed.
STEP-BY-STEP PARTITIONING GUIDE

• Delete Partitions:

• To delete a partition, right-click on it in Disk Management and select Delete Volume. Be aware
that this will erase all data on the partition.

• Change Drive Letters:

• To change the drive letter of a partition, right-click on the partition in Disk Management, select
