CALL FOR SUBMISSION OF RESEARCH PROPOSAL FOR THE 2024 TETFUND


INSTITUTION BASED RESEARCH (IBR) GRANT

The Directorate of Research and Development and the University Research and Development
Committee (URDC) are pleased to announce the call for submission of research proposal for
the 2024 TETFund IBR grant in the University.

The objective of the IBR grant is to promote research activities among academics in public
tertiary institutions in Nigeria. In the year 2022, Forty-one (41) IBR grants were awarded in
the University of Benin while in the year 2023, forty-five (45) grants were awarded. This year,
we will process and recommend another 41 research proposals for funding.

To be eligible for the IBR grant, the lead researcher must be a full time and confirmed academic
staff of University of Benin. He/She must demonstrate an independent capability to undertake
and lead researches by submitting a coherent research proposal based on the approved template
below. Proposal must be accompanied with the applicant’s curriculum vitae and confirmation
letter. At least one of the co-investigators must meet the requirements of the lead researcher
and demonstrate ability to take over from the lead researcher if the need arises.

Research proposals are to be submitted through the Faculty/Institute’s representatives in the


University Research and Development Committee (URDC). Faculties/Institutes are expected
to do a preliminary screening of the proposals and present the quality ones to URDC for further
assessment.

Please note that the budget for IBR proposal must not exceed two million Naira (N2,000,000)
and only the proposals that sailed through the URDC peer reviewing process will be approved
and recommended to TETFUND for funding. The deadline for receiving the Faculty/Institute
screened proposals in R&D office is Friday, April 5, 2024.

GUIDELINES FOR IBR TETFUND BUDGET.


Institution Based Research proposal needs to have a detailed budget justification which
demonstrates that the researcher has given a through and careful consideration of the cost of
the study. The following should serve a general guide for budget preparation to access the
IBR Intervention funds:

Personnel Cost
• Extant stipends and allowances for Research Assistants
• Document the basis used for calculating the cost
• Personal cost must be less than 10% of the total grant

Supply Expenses
• Only supplies that are directly relevant to the research plan
• Explain in details why specific supplies are needed and
• Do not request general office supplies or general laboratory supplies.

Equipment and Tests


• Explain the test items (why they are necessary); do not merely restate the proposed
expenditure
• Provide accurate price quotes for equipment
• Provide sufficient details to justify the rationale for acquiring the items under the
proposed study
• Explain why items are essential in relation to the aims and methodology of the study
as well as meeting the goals of the study
• Articulate how the funds requested are reasonable to complete the research
• Give accurate cost of running samples, conducting tests and analyses where
applicable (attach the advertised rates by the laboratory)

Transportation & Travels


• Request for reasonable amounts, showing the number of travels and cost
• State exactly which relevant academic meeting you plan to attend to present data and
• findings
• Include number of people, number of days, purpose, and location of travel with unit
and cumulative cost and
• Expenditure on travels must not exceed 25% of the total budget

Other Direct Cost


• Show the cost of data collection and how this is arrived at.

Other Indirect Cost


• Publication and dissemination cost (give details)
• Equipment maintenance and service contract (Justify need) and
• Give detailed breakdown of each cost.

Other Essential Information


• Please note that a researcher who has not concluded a previous IBR project is not
eligible
• Also members of staff who got grants for local and international conferences and have
not successfully retired the money are not eligible.
