answer to each of the questions.
Leonardo Da Vinci is among the most influential artists in history, having left a significant legacy not only in the
realm of art but in science as well, each discipline informing his mastery of the other. He was born in a Tuscan hamlet
near Vinci, Italy in 1452. Da Vinci contributed his unique genius to virtually everything he touched, so it is not easy to
put Da Vinci into a category. He was a painter, sculptor, astronomer, inventor, mathematician, writer, and more. No
name better seems to symbolize Renaissance age than Leonardo da Vinci.
Da Vinci is perhaps most famous as a painter. He began a nine-year apprenticeship at the age of 14 to Andrea del
Verrocchio, a popular sculptor, painter and goldsmith who was an important figure in the art world of the day. Leonardo
da Vinci not only developed his skills in drawing, painting and sculpting during his apprenticeship, but through others
working in and around the studio, he picked up knowledge in such diverse fields as mechanics, carpentry, metallurgy,
architectural drafting and chemistry. His drawings reflected da Vinci's interest in how things are put together and how
they work. Leonardo began creating his most well-known and replicated work, Mona Lisa when he received a
commission from Francesco del Giocondo to paint his wife. The precise date of completion for "Mona Lisa", one of the
most renowned paintings in the world, is still in question, but many historians agree that Leonardo da Vinci began the
masterpiece in 1503.
As a scientist and inventor, Da Vinci designed and invented things that were not possible to create during the
time that he lived. He made plans for helicopters, tanks, calculators, and 10 solar-powered machines. He kept extensive
notebooks in which he wrote in code. Historians have to hold the notebooks up to a mirror to be able to read them. Da
Vinci also made many discoveries, but he was not interested in becoming famous for them. He didn't publish any of his
ideas.
Just like William Shakespeare on literature, Leonardo's impact on art is tremendous. Throughout his life, Leonardo
da Vinci avoided the intrigues of worldly ambitions and vanity. He was a reserved and withdrawn man, not concerned
with glory, and yet absolutely sure of the value of his abilities. Along with a small band of contemporary Renaissance
figures, Leonardo da Vinci becomes the center of a movement of artists that has permanently enriched western culture.
