India, Shri Bhupinder Singh Bhalla addressed the World
Hydrogen Summit 2024 in Rotterdam, Netherlands on May 15,
2024, highlighting India's strategic vision and capabilities in the
domain of renewable energy and green hydrogen production.
• Highlighting the rapid scale-up of renewable energy
infrastructure in the country, the Secretary informed the

• The National Green Hydrogen Mission is a flagship initiative of
the Government of India, aimed at fostering the development
and adoption of green hydrogen technologies in India.
• The initial outlay for the Mission will be Rs.19,744 crore, including an outlay of Rs.17,490 crore for the Strategic Interventions for Green
Hydrogen Transition Programme (SIGHT) programme, Rs.1,466 crore for pilot projects, Rs.400 crore for R&D, and Rs. 388 crore towards
other Mission components.
• Ministry of New and Renewable Energy will formulate the scheme guidelines for implementation of the respective components.
• The Mission will result in the following likely outcomes by 2030 Development of green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 MMT
(Million Metric Tonne) per annum with an associated renewable energy capacity addition of about 125 GW in the country, Over Rs. Eight
lakh crore in total investments, Creation of over Six lakh jobs, Abatement of nearly 50 MMT of annual greenhouse gas emissions.
• Hydrogen is the lightest and most abundant element in the universe. It is rarely found in nature in its elemental form and must always be
extracted from other hydrogen-containing compounds.
• Depending on the nature of the method of its extraction, hydrogen is categorised into three categories, namely, Grey, Blue and Green.
• Grey Hydrogen: It is produced via coal or lignite gasification (black or brown), or via a process called steam methane reformation (SMR)
of natural gas or methane (grey). These tend to be mostly carbon-intensive processes.
• Blue Hydrogen: It is produced via natural gas or coal gasification combined with carbon capture storage (CCS) or carbon capture use
(CCU) technologies to reduce carbon emissions.
• Green Hydrogen: It is produced using electrolysis of water with electricity generated by renewable energy. The carbon intensity
ultimately depends on the carbon neutrality of the source of electricity (i.e., the more renewable energy there is in the electricity fuel
mix, the "greener" the hydrogen produced).

galaxy about 41 light-years from Earth, in the constellation Cancer.
• It orbits its star at one-25th the distance between our solar system's innermost planet
Mercury and the sun. As a result, its surface temperature is about 3,140 degrees Fahrenheit.
• It completes a full orbit every 18 hours or so.55 Cancri e has a mass about 8.8 times that of
Earth and a diameter approximately twice the size of our planet.
• News Link - Astronomers finally detect a rocky planet with an atmosphere - The Hindu
• 55 Cancri e was discovered in 2004. At the time scientist thought that it was a gas giant,
similar to Jupiter or Saturn.
• But in 2011, researchers found that it is a lot smaller and denser than a gas giant, meaning
it is a rocky exoplanet, much like the Earth.
• The JSWT data indicate that 55 Cancri e atmosphere is probably rich in carbon dioxide or
carbon monoxide and has a thickness that is “up to a few per cent’ of the planet’s radius.
• NASA’s James Webb Telescope: The telescope has been in the works for years. NASA led its development with the European Space
Agency (ESA) and the Canadian Space Agency. It was launched aboard a rocket on December 25, 2021.
• One light-year is equal to 9.5 trillion km.

• Indian expatriate Gopi

Thotakura made history as
the first Indian space
tourist and the second
Indian to go to space by
joining the crew of
Amazon founder Jeff
Bezos' Blue Origin's NS-25
mission.

• On 19 May, Blue Origin successfully completed its seventh manned space flight and the 25th for the New Shepard program.
• Gopi Thotakura was one of six members of the crew, including Mason Angel, Sylvain Chiron, Kenneth L. Hayes, Carroll Scholar and former
Air Force Captain Ed Dwight.
• Each astronaut left for space with a postcard from Blue Origin's foundation, Club for the Future.
• The club's mission is to inspire future generations to pursue careers in STEAM for the benefit of the Earth.
• The first one was Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, who flew to the Salyut 7 space station on a Soviet spacecraft in 1984.
• There are two main types of space tourism, sub-orbital and orbital.
• The sub-orbital spacecraft takes passengers just beyond the Kármán line — it lies nearly 100 kilometres above our heads and is
considered to be the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space.
• The passengers get to spend a few minutes in outer space and then come back to Earth.
• The NS-25 mission, which Thotakura is a part of, is a sub-orbital mission.

• Ed Dwight, a 90-year-old artist and former Air Force test pilot who was denied a chance to become
the first African American astronaut six decades ago, finally rocketed into space, fulfilling a
cherished dream in a brief up-and-down flight out of the lower atmosphere.
• President John F. Kennedy had chosen Ed Dwight, an Air Force pilot, to be the candidate for NASA's
inaugural Astronaut Corps. However, he was not chosen for the final flight in 1963.
• Until 1978, NASA did not select black astronauts, and in 1983, Guion Bluford became the first African
American in space.
• Three years earlier, the Soviets had launched the first black astronaut, Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez, a
Cuban citizen of African descent.
• In 2021, "Star Trek" actor William Shatner was the oldest man to go into space.
• Now, Dwight became the new record holder for the oldest person in space after the quick trip from West Texas.

C. One Space
D. GalaxEye
E. Skyrora

• Bengaluru-based space technology startup GalaxEye has

“successfully” tested its all-weather, all-time prolonged aerial
surveillance technology, which could help augment India’s defence
capabilities.
• GalaxEye tested its synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology on a subscale high altitude pseudo-satellite (HAPS) developed by the National
Aerospace Laboratories (NAL).
• HAPS are like high-flying drones that operate in the stratosphere, offering capabilities for prolonged aerial surveillance.
• Using solar energy and advanced battery systems, these platforms can stay aloft for extended periods.
• They can be moved or made to hover over a certain country or region. They can be homed at about 18 km above Earth, broadly where the
atmosphere ends and space begins.
• They are (typically) solar-powered and can carry payloads up to 40 kg. In India, NAL has been developing HAPs.
• While aircraft fly at an altitude of three to eight km, this electric platform has an endurance of two to three hours and stay put at the
