1. Fill in the blanks.

a) Perimeter of rectangle = 2(L + b ) units

b) Diagonal of a rectangle = √ l 2+ b2 units

c) Area of rectangle = ( l x b ) units

Area
d) Length of rectangle = units
Breadth

Area
e) Breadth of rectangle = units
length

f) Area parallelogram = (Base X height) sq. Units

2. In the adjoining figure, ABCD is a parallelogram in which AB = 14cm, BC = 10cm, and AC = 16cm, Find the
area of the parallelogram.

Solution:
Area of parallelogram ABCD = 2 X (area of ∆ ABC )

For ∆ ABC, let a = BC 10cm , b = AC = 16 cm, c = AB = 14 cm

1
Then S =

S – a = 10, S – b = 4, S – c = 6

∴ Area of ∆ ABC = √ s ( s−a )( s−b )( s−c ) D C

= √ 20 X 10 X 4 X 6 16 cm 10 cm

= √ 4800 = ( 40 X √ 3 ) cm2
A B
= ( 40 x 1.73) cm2 = 69.2 cm2 14 cm

∴ Area of parallelogram ABCD = 2 x (area of ∆ ABC )

= ( 2 x 69.2) cm2 = 138.4 cm2

3. Find the area of rhombus having each side equal to 13 cm and one of its diagonals equal to 24 cm.

Solution:

Let ABCD be the given rhombus in which AB = 13 cm and diagonal AC = 24 cm

Let Ac and BD intersect at O.

We know that the diagonals of a rhombus bisect each other at right angle .

1
∴ AO = AC = 12 cm and ∠ AOB = 90˚
2
D C
∴ OB = √( AB) −¿ ¿
2

O
= √(13) −¿ ¿
2

A B
= √ 25 = 5cm 13 cm

So, BD = 2 x OB =10 cm

1
Area of rhombus ABCD = ( x AC x BD ) sq. Units
2

1
= ( x 24 x 10 ) cm2

= 120 cm2

4. The length of a rectangle is 12m and its diagonal is 15m. Find breadth and area of the rectangle.

Solution:
Let the breadth of the rectangle be b metres

Then l2 + b2 = d2 = (12)2 + b2 = (15)2

= 144 + b2 = 225

B2= (225 – 144 ) = 81

B = √ 81 = 9
∴breadth = 9m

∴ Area = ( l x b )

= ( 12 x 9 ) m2

= 108 m2
5. The cost of carpeting a room 18 metres long with a carpet 75 cm wide at ₹74.50 per metre is ₹13410. Find
the breadth of the room.
Solution:

Total cost of carpeting

Length of carpet used =
Rate per metre

13410
= m = 180 m
74.50
3
Width of the carpet = 75 cm = m
4

3
Area of carpet = (180 X ) m2 = 135 m2
4

Let the breadth of the room be x metres.

Length of the room = 18 m

Area of the room = ( 18 X x )m2 = 18x m2

Clearly we have
Area of the room = Area of the carpet

18x = 135
135
X= = 7.5 m
18

Hence, breadth of the room = 7.5 m

6. A rectangle grassy lawn measuring 38m by 25m has been surrounded externally by a 2.5m wide
path. Calculate the cost gravelling the path at the rate of ₹ 334.50 per sq.metre.
Solution :
Length of the Lawn = 38 m 2.5 m
2.5 m
Breadth of the Lawn = 25 m 25 m
38 m
Area of the lawn = ( 38 X 25 ) m2 = 950 m2

Length of the lawn including the path = ( 38 + ( 2.5 + 2.5 ) m = 43 m

Breadth of the lawn including the path = ( 25 + ( 2.5 + 2.5 ) m = 30 m

Area of the lawn including the path = ( 43 X 30 ) m2 = 1290 m2

Area of the path = ( 1290 – 950 ) m2 = 340 m2

Rate of gravelling = ₹ 34.50 per m2

Cost of gravelling the path = ₹ ( 340 x 34.50 ) =₹ 11,730

7. The area of semi-circle is 27.72 cm2 . Find its perimeter.

1
∴ π r2 = 27.72
2

1 22
= 2 X 7 X r2 = 27.72

27.72 X 2 X 7 2772 X 7 252 X 7

R2 = 22
= 11 X 100
= 100

7X6X6X7
R2 = 100

6X7
R = 10 cm = 4.2 cm

Perimeter of the semi-circle = r ( π + 2 )

= ( 4.2 X ( 227 +2)) cm

( 36
= 4.2 X 7 cm )
= 21.6 cm

In the right angled ∆ ALF we have,

FL2 = AF2 – AL2 = (13)2 – ( 5 )2 = 169 – 25 = 144

FL = √ 144 cm = 12 cm
