Question One
Daka sells a second hand car to Mbewe and makes a profit of 10%.
Mbewe then sells the car to Nonde for K 25, 080, 000 making a loss
of 5%. How much did Daka pay for the car?
Question Two
If I subtract 1 from a numerator of a fraction, the fraction becomes
1//3. if I add 1 to both the numerator and the denominator of the

fraction, then it becomes 1/6. What is the fraction?

Question Three
The angle of elevation of the top of a pole from a man x metres
away is 45° and from a boy who is (x + 20) metre away from the
pole but on the other side is 20°.

Find the height of the pole.

Question Four
A man thought of constructing an ark like that Noah in the bible
had. Given that he used 20 metre long poles sawn in half along the
length and arranged them according to diameter sizes from the
widest, 32cm, to the narrowest, 5cm as shown below.

The flat surface was then varnished at a total cost of K 200, 000 of
which K70, 000 was for labour. If the varnish used was K400, 000
per litre per square metre, find the number of poles used to
construct the base of the man’s ark

Question Five
(Use construction instruments in this question)
Mr. Banda’s farm ABCD is rectangular measuring 500 metres for
edges AB and CD and 400 metres for edges AD and BC. Within the
farm area lies a pond P1, 150 metres from A and 100 metres from
the edge AB. Given that another pond P2 is 200 metres from C and
that angle P2CD = angle P2CB, find the distance between the two
ponds in metres. [Use scale 1cm to represent 50 metres].
Question Six
Chilanga cement has two depots D1 and D2 holding 120 tonnes and
40 tonnes of cement respectively. They have two customers C1 and
C2 who have ordered 80 tonnes and 50 tonnes of cement
respectively. C1 is 20 km from D1 and 40km from D2, C2is 15km
from D1 and 30km from D2. Delivery costs are proportional to the
distance travelled. How should they supply their customers to
minimize the transport costs?

SOLUTIONS
Q1
Daka paid 100/110 of Mbewe’s
Mbewe paid = 100/95 of Nonde’s
Hence: Daka paid = 100/110 of 100/95 of Nonde’s

100/110 x 100/95 x K 25, 080, 000

10/11 x 20 /19 x K 25, 080, 000
10 x 20 x K 120, 000
K 24, 000, 000

Q2
X – 1 /y = 1/3, x + 1/y + 1 =1/6 6(–8/3) –y = – 5
3(x – 1) = y x 1, 6(x – 1) = y + 1 –16 – y = –5
3x – 3 = y, 6x + 6 = y + 1 –y = –5 + 16
3x – y = 3, 6x – y = – 5 –y = 11
–3x – y = 3 y = –11
3x = –8/3
X = –8/3
Therefore, function is;
–8/3 ÷ –11/1
–8/3 x 1/–11
8/33

Q3.

h = x tan 45°, h = tan 20°x 9x + 20)

x tan 45° = tan 20°(x + 20)
x = x tan 20° + 20 tan 20°
x – x tan 20° = 20 tan 20°

-4-
5

x (1 – tan 20°) = 20 tan 20°

x = 20 tan 20°/1 – tan 20°
Q4.
200, 000 – 70, 200 = 129, 800

1m2 » 400
X » 129, 800
X = 129, 800/400
X = 324.5m2

Total diameter = 324.5/20

= 1622.5

n/2 (a + ι) = 1622.5
n = (30 + 5) = 1245
n = 3245/37
n = 55
Q5 please provide solutions

Q6. Let Chilanga supply C1 with x tonnes from D1 then C2 receives (80 – x )
tonnes from D2. If they supply C2 with y tonnes from D1 then C2 must
have (50 – y) tonnes from D2.
Then

D1 D2 Min requirement D1 D2
C1 x 80 – x 80 20 40
C2 y 50 – y 50 15 30
Max available 120 40
