The FIFA World Cup is the most prestigious
soccer competition in the world. Played every
four years, the World Cup hosts the top 32
national teams in a month-long tournament. It
has always been played every four years except
in 1942 and 1946. The host country is selected by
FIFA’s Council. Qualifying for the World Cup is a
long process during the years between each
tournament.
The first competition for the cup was organized in 1930 by the Fédération
Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). In total, 13 nations took part
– seven from South America, four from Europe and two from North
America. FIFA named Uruguay as the host country. In the final, Uruguay
defeated Argentina 4–2 in front of a crowd of 93,000 people in Montevideo
and became the first nation to win a World Cup.
The trophy awarded from 1930 to 1970 was the Jules Rimet Trophy, named
for the Frenchman who proposed the tournament. This cup was awarded
for the last time in 1970 to Brazil and from then
on, a new trophy called the FIFA World Cup was
put up for competition. First introduced in 1982,
the Golden Ball award is presented to the FIFA
World Cup tournament’s best player. The top
goal scorer is awarded the Golden Boot. The
Golden Gloves award has been given to the top
performing goalkeeper of the tournament since
1994. Players 21 years old and younger are
eligible for the Best Young Player award.
Brazil has won the most world cups, with a total of 5. Following Brazil are
Germany and Italy, with 4 wins each. Following these are Argentina,
Uruguay, and France with 2 wins each. England and Spain have both won
once, placing them amongst the top performing teams at the World Cup.
The World Cup all-time top scorer as of 2018 is Miroslav Klose of the
German national football team. He scored a total of 16 goals across four
World Cup tournaments.

Qatar is a country in the Middle East with


a population of 2.7 million. It is bordered
by Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf.
Much of the country is desert. The
government system is an emirate; the
chief of state is the amir or sheikh and
the head of government is the prime
minister. The current leader is Sheikh
Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani who took
over from his father in June 2013. The largest and capital city of Qatar is Doha. The
official language is Arabic.
Qatar, once one of the poorest Gulf states, is
today one of the richest countries in the region
due to its income from its large gas reserves.
The culture of Qatar is influenced by the
Islamic faith. Ramadan is the ninth and
considerably most important month of the
Islamic lunar calendar. During this time,
Muslims everywhere abstain from food and
drink from sunrise to sunset. The national dish
in Qatar is the machbūs, a meal made of rice,
meat, and vegetables. The holy day is Friday
so banks and other services are closed.
